With OBS, the relevant source is usually VLC Video: add the file to its playlist, then check both the OBS preview and YouTube Live Control Room. OBS documents playlist playback, but not a guaranteed way for every active playlist edit to take effect without refreshing playback. If the new video does not appear, use a planned source refresh or switch to a prepared scene while keeping the encoder connected.
Where the new video needs to go
A YouTube live stream receives a feed from an encoder or hosted streaming service. The queue of prerecorded videos is managed upstream by that encoder or service. Uploading a video to your YouTube channel’s normal video library does not add it to the live feed.
It helps to separate three things: the files you want to play, the playlist or queue that selects them, and the stream feed sent to YouTube. YouTube’s API describes a liveStream resource for delivery settings and a liveBroadcast resource for an event; a feed and the event displaying it are distinct parts of the setup. Add a video to an OBS stream
1. Identify the source currently playing
- In OBS, find the active scene and identify the source supplying the video. If it is a VLC Video source, it can play a playlist. A Media Source is for an individual media file. OBS documents both source types in its Media Sources guide.
- If VLC Video is unavailable, OBS requires VLC to be installed. A 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC.
- Before changing anything, note which source is visible in the program preview and whether it is currently playing. This helps you distinguish a queue change from a change to the scene being sent out.
2. Add the file to the playlist
- Open the settings or playlist controls for the active VLC Video source and add the new video to that source’s playlist.
- Put it in the intended position. If the playlist is set to shuffle, its next playback may not follow the visible order.
- Check whether looping is enabled if you expect the playlist to repeat. Confirm the file appears in the playlist and that OBS can play it.
The OBS guide documents playlist, loop, and shuffle capabilities. It does not promise that every change to an already-playing playlist will be detected immediately, or that playback will continue from the same point after an edit. Treat a live queue change as something to verify, not as a guaranteed hot update.

3. Verify what viewers will receive
- Check the OBS preview to see whether the added video is playing or queued as intended.
- Check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room as well. A file appearing in OBS’s playlist is not, by itself, proof that YouTube is receiving that playback.
- If the stream is scheduled, YouTube’s encoder workflow is to connect the encoder, wait for the preview, and select Go live in Live Control Room. Follow the current steps in YouTube’s encoder instructions.
4. If the active playlist does not update
Do not repeatedly edit the playlist and assume the change has gone live. Plan a low-risk refresh instead:
- Refresh or restart playback for the VLC source, if that is acceptable for the broadcast.
- Alternatively, prepare another scene or source with the desired playlist and transition to it while the encoder remains connected.
- Watch the OBS and YouTube previews during the transition. A visible change in program output can occur even when the incoming encoder feed remains connected.
A source refresh or scene transition may interrupt or reset the playback item. Test the method before relying on it during an important broadcast. If continuity matters more than an immediate queue change, wait for a safer transition point rather than ending the stream unexpectedly.

Keep the YouTube event and encoder connection straight
Changing the video source inside OBS is not the same as changing the stream key or ending a YouTube event. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes connecting with a stream URL and stream key; its live stream settings guide covers stream-key controls. Treat the key as a credential: do not share it, and change it only when necessary.
If your workaround would stop the encoder or end the broadcast, consider whether you need to preserve the existing live event. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end. A restart can therefore affect whether the viewing session remains one continuous event or becomes a new event. Check the current YouTube workflow before stopping an established broadcast.

Options for changing a 24/7 video queue
These approaches differ in who manages playback and how you make a queue change. The available documentation does not establish comparable prices or service-level reliability figures, so neither should be inferred from this table.

YouTube’s encoder instructions also link to a verified-encoder directory; a listing indicates that a tool is available in that directory, not that all listed tools have the same queue-edit behavior, plan access, or geographic availability.

Check rights before adding gameplay or other recordings
Before putting a recording into a continuous stream, make sure you have the rights needed for the video and any music, overlays, or other material it contains. A game recording can include material subject to rights held by the game publisher or other parties. YouTube may assess a live stream and its archive under its applicable policies; adding a video to a playlist does not establish that it is cleared for streaming or monetization. Review the relevant rights and YouTube requirements before broadcasting, especially when the queue runs unattended.
