If your YouTube stream stopped after an OBS update, first find out what stopped: OBS itself, the connection to YouTube, encoding, or playback for viewers. The timing makes an update worth investigating, but does not prove OBS is the cause. Save your logs and back up your OBS Profile and Scene Collection before changing settings or installing an older version; then follow the troubleshooting branch that matches the error.
Identify what failed before changing OBS
Check whether OBS closed or remained open, what OBS and YouTube displayed, and whether YouTube’s Live Control Room received the stream. Those details separate a likely crash or release regression from a network, encoding, or stream-key problem.
| What you observe | Branch to investigate first | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| OBS exits or crashes | Application, plugin, or system crash | Record the exact OBS version and error; save the OBS log and any crash information; review release notes and recent changes. |
| OBS stays open, but reports dropped frames or disconnects | Network path or bitrate | Check OBS’s dropped-frame status, sustainable upload, selected server, and network connection. |
| OBS reports “encoding overloaded” or the local output is choppy | GPU, rendering, or encoding performance | Check GPU load, output resolution and frame rate, and demanding scenes or sources. |
| OBS cannot start the stream and YouTube reports an encoder error | Stream key, account connection, or service startup | Refresh the stream key in YouTube Live Control Room and update OBS; check YouTube’s live metrics and reported errors. |
| One viewer reports playback trouble | That viewer’s device or connection | Ask the viewer to try another device or network and check whether others see the same problem. |
| Many viewers on one shared network report trouble | The viewers’ shared network | Ask those viewers to check their network connection and capacity. |
| Viewers on separate networks report trouble | Encoder output or the outgoing stream | Check OBS output, YouTube dashboard errors, CPU load, any local recording, and the outbound connection. |
These are diagnostic indicators, not proof of a particular cause. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide describes dropped frames as a network issue between the computer and remote ingest server; its Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide treats encoding overload as a performance problem. YouTube Help’s Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream guide addresses stream-start errors and viewer reports.

- OBS version and operating system.
- The exact error text and the time the stream failed.
- Whether OBS remained open, and whether it showed dropped frames or encoding overload.
- Whether the stream appeared in YouTube Live Control Room, along with any live metrics or reported errors.
- The relevant OBS log. Keep it with your notes so you can match entries to the failure time.
Export the Profile and Scene Collection separately. OBS’s Profiles guide explains that a Profile includes Stream settings, including the connected account, as well as Video and Output settings. It does not include Scenes; those are managed through Scene Collections. Preserve media files and other assets that your scenes reference, too. Keep an untouched backup and use a copy when testing, rather than making your only copy the subject of troubleshooting.
If OBS cannot start the stream or YouTube reports an encoder error
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and obtain a new stream key.
- Update the stream key in OBS, taking care to use the correct YouTube account and stream.
- Try starting the stream again, then check YouTube’s live metrics and any reported error.
- If you log in directly to YouTube from encoder software rather than using a stream key, YouTube directs you to contact that software provider’s support.
YouTube Help’s documented first remedy for this third-party-encoder startup problem is to get a new stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. A stream-key error is not, by itself, evidence that an OBS update broke encoding.

If OBS stays open but drops frames or disconnects
Dropped frames point first to the connection between OBS and the remote ingest server, or to a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, says to start by setting bitrate to 75% of total upload speed. Treat that as OBS’s rule of thumb for a starting point, not a guaranteed YouTube setting or a measurement of what your connection can sustain consistently.
- Check whether upload capacity is steady. If other devices or applications are using the connection, pause heavy uploads and downloads while testing. A speed result is only a snapshot; instability can still cause dropped frames.
- Lower the OBS bitrate and test again. Choose a rate your connection can sustain, rather than assuming the previous setting remains suitable. Lower bitrate can reduce stream quality.
- Try a different server. OBS recommends testing another server when troubleshooting a connection to the remote stream ingest server.
- Use wired Ethernet if possible. OBS notes that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. If you already have a suitable Ethernet cable, test with it before buying anything.
- Check the network path. Temporarily investigate whether a VPN, firewall or security program, bundled network-prioritization utility, network driver, router, modem, cable, or other network hardware is involved. Change one factor at a time so you can tell whether it mattered.
- Use dynamic bitrate only as a workaround. OBS describes it as a way to respond to connection problems when the underlying issue cannot be resolved. It may reduce quality; it does not repair the root cause.
OBS also suggests checking another streaming service as a diagnostic, but that comparison is not proof that YouTube is at fault or that a YouTube-specific issue has been fixed. If the problem continues and you are unsure whether network hardware is faulty, OBS recommends contacting your ISP before replacing equipment.

If OBS reports “encoding overloaded” or the output is choppy
This branch concerns the computer’s rendering or encoding capacity, not necessarily the internet connection. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide associates an inability to keep up with GPU overload or another system bottleneck. Reduce the work OBS must do, then test the same stream again.
- Close other applications that are using the GPU or significant system resources.
- If you are streaming a game, limit its frame rate so it does not consume all available GPU capacity.
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate if the computer cannot maintain the current settings.
- Simplify complex scenes and disable or remove resource-intensive sources, including browser sources, while diagnosing.
- On Windows, OBS suggests trying “Run as administrator” for GPU overload.
Change one or two settings at a time and observe whether the overload warning or choppy output changes. Lower output resolution or frame rate can affect the delivered picture; simplifying a scene may change what viewers see. A network speed test does not resolve a GPU bottleneck.

When and how to roll back OBS
Consider a rollback when the problem began immediately after a specific OBS release, the failure points to OBS or a changed component rather than the network or stream key, and ordinary troubleshooting has not resolved it. The timing alone is not enough. Check the current and previous release notes for changes relevant to your operating system, plugins, or workflow before choosing an older build.
- Back up first. Export the Profile and Scene Collection separately, retain referenced media, and keep a copy that you will not use for experiments.
- Find the official archive. OBS’s official Download OBS Studio page links to “Previous Releases,” which leads to the OBS Studio Contributors’ GitHub Releases archive.
- Choose a matching build. Select a release intended for your operating system and review its release notes. Do not assume an installer or downgrade behaves identically across operating systems, OBS versions, plugins, and configurations.
- Test one change at a time. Use the same normal workflow and, where practical, the same scene, output settings, connection, and stream destination. Compare the result with the failure you recorded.
- Keep the comparison reversible. Preserve your backups and notes while evaluating the older build. If the same issue remains, investigate the matching network, encoding, or YouTube branch instead of repeatedly changing versions.
The official archive provides previous releases, but that does not establish a universal safe-downgrade guarantee. The OBS Profiles guide documents profile export and import; because profiles and Scene Collections are separate, back up both rather than relying on a single export.

Check YouTube and content issues separately
If OBS connects but YouTube reports an error, use Live Control Room metrics and error details to distinguish a startup or delivery problem from viewer playback trouble. A stream key lets an encoder connect; it does not grant rights to the video, music, or other material being streamed. Before broadcasting recordings or looping material, make sure you have the necessary rights and check YouTube’s current live-streaming and monetization rules for copyright and reused content. The troubleshooting guidance cited here is not a full statement of those policies, and no OBS repair can make unauthorized material permissible.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded recordings or a playlist, rather than diagnose or repair OBS, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. It does not fix an OBS installation, and it streams to YouTube only. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: your computer and home connection do not need to remain on to keep the cloud stream running.
- One flat price per slot covers uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required; one free day is available per account.
