To run a 24/7 YouTube music stream, play a playlist through an encoder such as OBS and send its output to a scheduled YouTube broadcast. OBS can loop or shuffle a playlist, but its documented playlist controls do not schedule a different playlist for weekends. Plan that switch as a separate automation task—or change playlists manually—and test the complete workflow before relying on it.
Choose how the stream and broadcasts will work
YouTube distinguishes the feed sent by your encoder from the broadcast viewers watch. In YouTube’s terminology, a stream carries the audio and video; a broadcast is the event or video associated with that feed. The Live Streaming API documentation describes cases where a continuous feed can be associated with separate broadcasts. That makes two approaches worth considering:

Either approach still needs a person or a reliable automation layer to handle playlist switching, check the encoder and respond to interruptions. Do not assume that selecting Loop or Shuffle in OBS will change playlists on a calendar schedule.
Clear music rights before building the stream
Use music you own or have permission to use for livestreaming on YouTube. Keep the relevant licenses and permission records available. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match can lead to interruption or termination. Even when you have a license, YouTube says the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel for the stream to proceed without interruption. Build weekday and weekend playlists in OBS
Install VLC and add the weekday playlist
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source to appear.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene you will stream.
- Add the weekday audio or video files to its playlist in the order you want them played.
- Set the source to loop if the playlist should repeat. Choose shuffle only if you want items played in a non-fixed order.
The OBS Project says the VLC Video source can hold a playlist of items, unlike the regular Media Source. Its documentation covers playlist playback, looping and shuffling; it does not document a day-of-week scheduler. Read OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
Prepare the weekend playlist
Create a second playlist with the weekend tracks in the intended order. Before going live, confirm the files play, the audio levels are consistent, and the playlist repeats or shuffles as intended. Keep weekday and weekend files clearly labelled so the correct list is easy to select.

If you have only one recording to repeat, OBS’s ordinary Media Source has a Loop setting. For a list of multiple files, use VLC Video.
Create the YouTube broadcast and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule Stream.
- Reuse an appropriate stream setting or create a new scheduled stream. Set the event details and visibility as needed.
- In the encoder settings, copy YouTube’s stream URL and stream key into the corresponding OBS streaming fields. Treat the key as a password: do not show it in a screenshot, overlay or recording. Reset it if you believe it has been exposed.
- Start streaming from OBS and wait for the preview in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Check that the audio and video are correct, then start the broadcast in Live Control Room. Confirm the event is publicly accessible if that is your intention.

Make the weekend switch explicit
OBS’s documented loop and shuffle options control playback, not the day of the week. You therefore need either a manual playlist change or an automation workflow that you have tested independently.
Manual change
At the chosen changeover time, stop or pause the current playback, load the weekend playlist in the VLC Video source, confirm it is playing, and check the live output. If you keep one continuous broadcast, coordinate the change so the feed remains available; do not assume that changing a playlist creates a new YouTube event.

Automated change
Use a scheduler or automation layer only after verifying that it can reliably select the right playlist at the intended local time, keep OBS and the media source running, and recover from errors. The official OBS and YouTube pages cited here do not establish a particular scheduler or give a supported calendar-switch procedure, so test your chosen setup before depending on it. Keep a manual fallback available.

- Listen for silence, clipping, abrupt level differences and gaps between files.
- Check that the intended playlist—not a desktop notification or unrelated source—is reaching YouTube.
- Confirm the event’s visibility and watch page from a separate viewer session.
- Monitor OBS, local file playback and the YouTube preview rather than assuming the feed will recover by itself.
- Test what happens if the encoder or connection stops, and decide who will respond.
Plan for archives and long-running events
YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That is a specific threshold, not a promise that a longer unbroken broadcast will be archived in the same way. If you need a replay, plan how to retain or publish suitable recordings and verify YouTube’s current behavior for your event. Source: YouTube Help’s encoder streaming guide.
Troubleshoot common problems
