OBS can reconnect after a network interruption while it is still open, but it cannot restart itself after the OBS process crashes. To keep a YouTube fireplace stream running, set up two recovery layers: a process supervisor that relaunches OBS and a YouTube broadcast that can accept the returning encoder. Then test the complete chain—including the viewer-facing broadcast—before relying on it unattended.
What each recovery layer does
OBS automatic reconnect and an operating-system supervisor solve different problems. OBS’s automatic reconnect is for a lost streaming connection while OBS remains running; it does not relaunch a crashed application. A supervisor can launch OBS at boot or after process failure, but it cannot guarantee that YouTube’s broadcast is still available or that the returning encoder uses the right stream key.
| Recovery option | What it can recover | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| OBS automatic reconnect | A lost connection while OBS is still running. | It cannot relaunch a crashed OBS process. OBS Studio Overview Guide |
| Windows Task Scheduler with OBS launch parameters | OBS starting at boot or after a configured process failure. | Requires a correctly configured task, working directory, and tested stream launch. OBS Launch Parameters and Microsoft’s RestartOnFailure setting |
| systemd service supervision | Process failure on a Linux host configured to run OBS in its required environment. | OBS may require a graphical session, devices, audio, permissions, and login-session configuration. systemd.service manual |
| YouTube broadcast settings | Some broadcast lifecycle and reconnect cases. | A broadcast that has ended, a mismatched key, or a required manual action can still prevent recovery. Verify the channel’s current settings. YouTube live stream settings |
Configure OBS and your computer to recover
Windows: launch OBS at boot and after failure
- In Windows Task Scheduler, create a task that launches OBS under the Windows account and session used for streaming. Configure the task’s failure-restart behavior using Task Scheduler’s restart settings. The exact controls depend on how the task is created; see Microsoft’s RestartOnFailure element documentation.
- Set the task’s working directory to the folder containing
obs64.exe. OBS specifically calls out this working-directory requirement for automated launches. - Use OBS’s documented
--startstreaminglaunch parameter if you want OBS to begin streaming automatically. Before using it unattended, confirm it opens the intended OBS profile and scene collection, selects the expected destination and stream key, and starts the correct fireplace scene. - Configure a restart delay or limit if available, and make sure the task cannot start multiple OBS instances. Repeatedly relaunching an application that is crashing can create a loop rather than restore the stream; configure an alert or a way for someone to check repeated failures.
OBS documents launch parameters and automated launching in its Launch Parameters guide. The task’s ability to start streaming is not proof that YouTube has restored the intended live event.
Linux: supervise the process with systemd only after validating the environment
systemd supports restart policies such as Restart=on-failure. OBS still needs a service wrapper and a working launch environment. A headless service may not have access to the display, audio devices, capture or playback devices, permissions, or user session that OBS needs. Validate those requirements on the actual machine before depending on automatic restart.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use the systemd.service manual for restart-policy behavior, and test the OBS service as the same user and in the same session conditions you expect to use in production.
Keep startup from becoming a crash loop
- Set a restart delay or limit where your supervisor supports it.
- Prevent duplicate OBS instances from being launched.
- Check the operating-system task or service history and OBS logs after a restart.
- Arrange for a person to investigate repeated failures; automatic relaunch is not a diagnosis or a fix for the underlying crash.
Make sure YouTube can accept OBS when it returns
In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm which stream key and broadcast settings the OBS profile uses. YouTube documents creating and managing stream keys and reusing stream settings in its live stream settings help. A restarted OBS process may still fail to restore the viewer-facing stream if the key is wrong, the broadcast has ended, or YouTube requires a manual Go Live action.

OBS Project’s YouTube guide describes scheduled broadcasts and says that disabling auto-stop can allow a broadcast to reconnect after a brief interruption. It also notes that a broadcast may eventually end after receiving no stream data for multiple hours. The detailed lifecycle guidance is from an OBS Project community guide last updated in 2021, so verify the current controls and behavior in the channel’s Live Control Room rather than assuming a setting or label remains unchanged: How to stream to YouTube with OBS Studio.
Test the full recovery chain
- Schedule a test when you can monitor the channel. Confirm the intended YouTube broadcast, stream key, OBS profile, and fireplace scene are loaded.
- Stop OBS or simulate a controlled OBS process failure. Check whether the supervisor relaunches it and whether
--startstreamingstarts the intended stream. - Watch the Live Control Room and the public viewer page. Confirm that the stream returns to the intended broadcast and that viewers can see the video again—not merely that OBS says it is streaming.
- Check the supervisor history and OBS logs for errors, duplicate instances, or a manual action that would prevent unattended recovery.
This is a recommended operational test, not a guarantee that every future crash or platform interruption will recover automatically.

Diagnose what actually failed
OBS closed unexpectedly
Check OBS logs or crash reports and the operating system’s task or service history. If OBS exited, the supervisor is the layer that must relaunch it. OBS’s process recovery settings do not explain why it crashed, so investigate the reported error before trusting repeated restarts.
OBS is open but the stream disconnects or drops frames
This may be a connection problem rather than a crash. OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Check the network route, bitrate, VPN or firewall interference, and connection to the ingest server. Dynamic bitrate can mitigate symptoms, but OBS advises that it does not fix the underlying connection problem. See OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
OBS puts the frame-dropping behavior this way: “OBS opts to drop the frames to avoid buffering and keep your stream playing.” Its Help Portal explains the behavior; dropping frames is not evidence by itself that OBS has crashed.
Encoding or rendering is overloaded
There is no universal hardware upgrade that prevents OBS crashes. Workload depends on the encoder, output resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; simpler scenes can reduce resource demands. OBS also warns that meeting baseline system requirements does not guarantee that a machine can stream a particular workload. Review OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting and its Hardware Encoding guide. A supported hardware encoder can move encoding work away from the CPU, but OBS does not claim that it prevents application crashes.

The computer lost power
A UPS sized for the computer and network equipment may bridge some power interruptions, depending on load and battery capacity. It is only a power-continuity measure: it does not restart OBS after a software crash or solve an internet-provider failure.
Cost and workload trade-offs
Keeping OBS on a home computer means the computer and network must remain available, and someone may need to investigate failed restarts. A UPS adds a separate cost if power interruptions are part of the problem; it does not replace process supervision. No reliability percentage or standard recovery time is established for this setup, so plan around monitored tests rather than assuming a particular recovery window.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube fireplace loop that stays live without keeping OBS or a home computer running, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the cloud keeps the stream running.
- Every slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
- Monthly: $9.99 per month.
StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and YouTube streams, not camera-based broadcasts. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
