For watching a nature livestream with video visible, use the official YouTube Android app. It supports picture-in-picture (PiP) for non-music long-form videos, so the stream can stay in a small floating window while you use another app. If you mean listening with the phone screen off, YouTube’s documented background play requires a signed-in Premium membership; Premium Lite background play is rolling out in India for most videos, but that is not a guarantee for every livestream.

PiP means the video remains visible in a floating overlay while you navigate elsewhere. Background play means playback continues after leaving the app or turning off the screen. They solve different needs.
Use YouTube for the most straightforward viewing
Watch in the app or use PiP
- Open the nature livestream in the official YouTube Android app and start playback.
- To keep the video visible while using another app, leave YouTube using your device’s Home gesture or button. If PiP is available for that video and enabled on the device, YouTube minimizes into a floating window.
- Move or resize the PiP window as needed. Return to the YouTube app for the full player and stream controls.
YouTube Help describes PiP availability for non-music long-form video. A nature livestream may fit that category, but availability can depend on the video and app/device conditions; do not assume every stream will enter PiP.
For screen-off listening
YouTube Help says background play in its mobile apps is available to signed-in Premium members. Google’s India blog announced on 12 March 2026 that background play and downloads were rolling out to Premium Lite members in India for most videos. The wording does not establish that every live stream is eligible, so check the particular stream and your account’s available benefits.

Free alternative: NewPipe
NewPipe’s project lists live-stream viewing, popup playback, background audio, and channel notifications. That makes it a free option to consider if you want a floating stream or screen-off audio without using YouTube’s official app.
There is a compatibility trade-off: NewPipe explains that it parses YouTube’s website or uses an internal API because YouTube’s official API is restricted for its purposes. Changes on YouTube can therefore affect whether features work. These are the project’s stated capabilities, not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback.

Install it through the distribution routes recommended by the project: its F-Droid repository or GitHub releases. Use the project’s own instructions rather than an unofficial download site.
Where VLC fits—and where it does not
VLC for Android is free and open source, and its Google Play India listing says it plays network streams. VideoLAN’s settings documentation describes background playback and PiP modes. Those features make VLC useful for compatible network sources, but the reviewed documentation does not confirm direct, reliable playback of a YouTube livestream URL. For a YouTube nature stream, use the YouTube app or consider NewPipe instead of assuming VLC will accept the link.

What “24/7 monitoring” can realistically mean
The cited app and help pages do not establish a guarantee that any Android app will play continuously around the clock. A phone session can be interrupted by connectivity problems, app or operating-system behavior, battery management, or playback eligibility. Treat 24/7 as the duration you hope to monitor, not an uptime promise from the app.
Reduce avoidable interruptions
- Use a stable network and check that the stream itself is still live.
- For screen-off playback, confirm that the signed-in account has an eligible background-play benefit and that the specific video supports it.
- If playback stops in the background, check the app’s background-play setting, background mobile-data access, app updates, notifications, and whether another app is playing audio.
- For a long session, keep the phone powered as needed; a mobile app still depends on the phone and its connection remaining available.
Troubleshooting playback
PiP does not appear
- Check whether PiP is enabled in Android and whether the YouTube app has permission to use it.
- Confirm that you are using the official YouTube app and that the video is eligible; YouTube’s stated PiP scope is non-music long-form video.
- Update the app and retry. Some playback or account conditions may prevent PiP for a particular video.
Audio stops when the screen turns off
- Verify that you are signed in to an account with an eligible Premium benefit. YouTube Help documents background play as a Premium feature.
- Check background playback settings and allow background mobile data if you are using mobile data.
- Check whether another app is playing audio, and update YouTube if needed.
- In India, Premium Lite background-play availability was announced for most videos, not all livestreams; test the specific stream rather than assuming eligibility.
NewPipe or VLC will not play the stream
- For NewPipe, check for project updates and use its recommended F-Droid repository or GitHub releases; YouTube-side changes can affect compatibility.
- For VLC, confirm that the source is a supported network stream. The cited VLC material does not verify YouTube livestream URL support.
- When the source is a YouTube watch page and an alternative client fails, retry in the official YouTube app.
