A black picture during an FFmpeg loop is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Find the first place the picture goes black: the source file, FFmpeg’s output, YouTube Live Control Room’s incoming preview, or the public player. Then check stream mapping, YouTube’s ingest requirements, loop-boundary timing, and any network errors in the FFmpeg log. A running FFmpeg process alone does not prove that it is sending usable video, and no single flag is a universal fix.
Find where the picture first turns black
Work from the source toward the viewer. The stage where the image first disappears narrows the likely cause; a black public player is not, by itself, proof that FFmpeg failed.
- Play the original file. Check that the affected section is not actually black and that the file contains a video stream. If it is black before streaming, fix or replace the source segment.
- Read FFmpeg’s startup and ongoing output. Confirm that a video stream is selected and mapped to the output. Look for decoding errors, stream-mapping failures, encoder errors, and output disconnects. A process that remains open may still be failing to send valid video.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Inspect the incoming preview and stream-health messages. YouTube says its dashboard reports errors with timestamps and distinguishes critical and moderate messages; follow the specific message shown rather than assuming a generic format problem. See YouTube’s live-streaming error messages.
- Check the public player after the incoming preview. If the preview is healthy but public playback is black, the reviewed sources do not establish a specific diagnosis for that case. Avoid changing FFmpeg settings at random; first confirm whether the incoming stream remains healthy.
Check YouTube’s incoming format
For RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings, YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Its guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. Use the resolution- and frame-rate-specific bitrate guidance on YouTube’s encoder settings page, choosing a bitrate your upload connection can sustain. Test with representative motion and audio, then monitor stream health.
If Live Control Room specifically reports “Incorrect stream format,” YouTube’s documented fix for that error is to use H.264 video and AAC audio. Apply that change when the error is present; do not assume it is the cause when YouTube has not shown it.

Check the loop, source streams, and mapping
Confirm the loop flag is not being mistaken for a video fix
The FFmpeg loop option controls repetition; it does not prove that the right video stream is selected or that the output is valid. A user-posted command illustrates the general option arrangement as -stream_loop -1 -re -i input.mp4 ... -f flv rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/..., but it is an example, not a universally prescribed command. Inspect the options against your installed FFmpeg version, input streams, and intended output. The example appears in a community issue, not official FFmpeg guidance.
If blackness recurs at the repeat boundary
Compare the last frames of the file with its first frames, and inspect audio/video timestamps around the transition. A failure at the same repeat point is more consistent with a seam or timing issue than a format problem affecting the entire stream; that is a diagnostic inference, not a confirmed cause. A black interval throughout the stream points elsewhere in the chain.

StreamNeo’s vendor guide notes that variable-frame-rate media can be a concern for long-run timing drift and advises constant-frame-rate source preparation. Drift is distinct from a black picture, so treat frame-rate conversion as a targeted test when timing degrades over time, not as a guaranteed black-screen fix. See StreamNeo’s comparison of OBS, server-based FFmpeg, and cloud looping.
If the input has no audio
A third-party guide demonstrates adding a silent AAC track and mapping it alongside the original video. That is one way to supply audio, not an official YouTube requirement established by the sources cited here. Do not change audio mapping unless the input or YouTube’s error points to it. The example is in Streamloop’s looping guide.

Separate a network interruption from black media
If FFmpeg logs show output-write failures or temporary network outages, the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation describes an RTMP recovery setup. Its example uses -f fifo -fifo_format flv, -attempt_recovery 1, and -recovery_wait_time 1; it attempts recovery every second, with indefinite attempts in the documented example. Consult the documentation matching your installed FFmpeg version: FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation and FFmpeg FLV format documentation.
Recovery options can address a temporary output interruption. They cannot create a missing video stream, repair a black source, or make an unsupported format acceptable to YouTube.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | What to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The source file is black in the affected section | Play the original around that section. | Correct or replace the source; changing ingest settings will not restore absent picture content. |
| The source is good, but FFmpeg reports mapping, decoding, or encoder errors | Check selected and mapped streams and the relevant log lines. | Correct the input/output stream selection or address the specific decode or encoding error. |
| YouTube preview is black or reports an ingest error | Read the timestamped Live Control Room health message. | Apply the fix for the displayed error; for “Incorrect stream format,” YouTube specifies H.264 video and AAC audio. |
| Blackness appears only at the loop seam | Inspect the last and first frames and timestamps at the transition. | Repair the media seam or timing issue indicated by that inspection. |
| FFmpeg logs show output-write or temporary connection failures | Distinguish a dropped output connection from a stream that is connected but carries black video. | Consider the documented FIFO recovery approach for temporary failures. |
| YouTube preview appears healthy but public playback is black | Confirm preview and stream health remain healthy. | The cited sources do not establish a specific fix for this separate playback case; avoid treating it as a proven FFmpeg fault. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If FFmpeg troubleshooting is solved but you do not want a computer and home connection running continuously, StreamNeo is a managed option for looping uploaded videos to YouTube. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running with your computer off. StreamNeo streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only and is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
