How do I connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live?
YouTube Live Control Room supplies the connection details; FFmpeg is the encoder that sends audio and video to them. The steps below cover the YouTube side and the checks around the encoder. They do not provide a verified FFmpeg command or guarantee that one FFmpeg process will remain connected indefinitely.
1. Create or open a broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- For a scheduled broadcast, open Manage → Schedule stream, then create an event or reuse settings.
- Review the event’s title, visibility, and other metadata before starting. YouTube’s encoder workflow is described in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
2. Copy this event’s stream URL and key
Open the event’s Stream settings in Live Control Room and copy the displayed Stream URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder configuration. Both values are needed to connect. YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it, and reset it if exposed. Only channel owners or managers can reset a key. See Manage live stream settings.
A reused key can simplify repeat setup, but ensure the encoder uses the key and URL for the intended channel and event. If you reset a key, update the encoder with the replacement.

3. Choose RTMPS
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the feed between the encoder and YouTube. In Live Control Room, select the lock icon in the Stream URL field to reveal the RTMPS URL. Use the URL shown there; do not construct an address or append a path yourself. YouTube’s instructions are in Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
4. Match encoding settings to the connection
Choose settings based on the video’s resolution and frame rate, the video codec, and the sustained upload capacity available to the encoder. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations vary across those combinations, so there is no single bitrate that is right for every stream. Its current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps; it recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Audio can use AAC or MP3. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the matching resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate guidance.

These are encoder requirements and recommendations, not a ready-made FFmpeg command. The official YouTube pages cited here do not establish FFmpeg flags, reconnect behavior, or a method that guarantees an uninterrupted session forever.
5. Start the encoder and verify the preview
- Start the FFmpeg process using the event’s copied URL and key and settings appropriate for the source and upload connection.
- In Live Control Room, check that YouTube receives the stream and displays a preview. Confirm that audio and video are present and monitor stream health.
- For a scheduled event, select Go live after the preview appears. Sending the feed alone does not complete the scheduled-broadcast workflow.
YouTube’s streaming tips also recommend preparing in advance and checking audio and video during the broadcast.

Will YouTube archive a 24/7 live stream?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that a single 24/7 broadcast will be archived automatically. If you need a recording, plan a separate local or remote recording workflow and verify it independently; do not treat the live broadcast itself as a guaranteed archive. Why is the YouTube stream preview not showing?
- Connection error or third-party encoder startup error: Re-copy the current stream URL and key from Live Control Room. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends getting a new stream key for third-party encoder startup errors.
- RTMPS SSL or timeout problem: Check that the copied server URL begins with
rtmps, notrtmp. If the encoder’s URL handling requires it, YouTube suggests port 443. Use the URL supplied for the stream rather than adding a guessed path. - No preview despite a running process: Verify the URL and key, available upload capacity, stream health indicators, and that the encoder is actually sending audio and video. Recheck codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate against YouTube’s guidance.
- Stream key may be exposed or invalid: Reset it in YouTube Studio if it has been compromised, then replace the old key in the encoder configuration.
A continuous stream also needs operational monitoring and a plan for interruptions. The cited YouTube guidance does not promise indefinite session duration or specify FFmpeg’s automatic reconnection behavior.
