Lower OBS’s outgoing bitrate first: that is the main setting controlling how much data a continuous stream sends. If your content can tolerate it, also reduce output resolution or frame rate, then test the actual scene and compare the resulting data estimate with your own internet plan’s usage meter. There is no single India-wide data quota or cost to assume.
1. Find a bitrate your connection can sustain
Measure your upload speed and leave headroom for normal fluctuations and other devices using the connection. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the intended stream. OBS likewise advises using a bitrate supported by a stable upload connection. Setting OBS to consume all measured upload capacity can make the stream unreliable. YouTube’s live encoder settings and the OBS Studio Overview Guide explain the relevant considerations.
2. Reduce the outgoing video settings in OBS
- Lower the video bitrate. In OBS, open Settings → Output and adjust Video Bitrate. Test progressively lower values while watching the stream preview and YouTube’s stream health. A lower rate generally sends less data, but it can reduce image quality; the result depends on resolution, codec, motion, fine detail, and viewing conditions.
- Reduce output resolution if the content allows. In OBS, check the scaled output resolution in the video settings. A static information screen or mostly still scene may remain readable at a lower resolution. Small text, fine detail, and fast movement may suffer more, so judge the actual content rather than relying on the stream title.
- Reduce frame rate if motion is limited. Frame rate is set in OBS’s video settings. A lower frame rate may suit a static scene, while gameplay and other fast-moving footage can look less smooth. Re-test at the intended resolution and bitrate.
- Include audio in the total. YouTube recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Audio is usually a smaller share of the stream than video, but it still contributes to the data sent.
YouTube’s live ingestion recommendations depend on the codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its current guidance lists H.264 ranges of 3–8 Mbps for 720p at 30 or 60 fps, 5–14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 6–17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. For AV1 or H.265, it lists recommended values of 6 Mbps, 10 Mbps, and 12 Mbps for those respective cases, with a 2 Mbps minimum at 720p and a 4 Mbps minimum at both 1080p settings. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of image quality at every bitrate. They concern live ingestion, not uploading prerecorded videos. Check the guidance for the codec OBS is actually sending because YouTube’s recommendations can change. The page also specifies CBR and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table.
3. Estimate how much data the stream uses
For a continuous stream, a useful decimal-gigabyte estimate is:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
GB per 24 hours ≈ total outgoing Mbps × 10.8
This is a calculation from bitrate and time, not a usage statistic published by YouTube or an Indian internet provider. It assumes the stated number is the total stream bitrate. If it is video-only, include audio; actual usage can also vary with protocol overhead, reconnects, bitrate fluctuations, and other traffic on the same connection.
| Total outgoing bitrate | Approximate data in 24 hours |
|---|---|
| 1 Mbps | 10.8 GB |
| 2 Mbps | 21.6 GB |
| 3 Mbps | 32.4 GB |
| 6 Mbps | 64.8 GB |
| 8 Mbps | 86.4 GB |
At the recommended 128 Kbps stereo audio rate, audio adds about 1.38 GB per day by the same calculation. Figures use decimal GB; your provider may display GB or GiB and may meter usage differently. Check your current plan terms and its router, account, or provider usage meter. Indian quotas and charges vary by provider, technology, location, and plan, so do not treat any one estimate as a universal India data price or allowance.

4. Keep data savings from becoming connection problems
Use dynamic bitrate as a fallback, not a baseline
OBS’s Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion option can reduce bitrate when the network cannot keep up. That may help avoid dropped frames during congestion, but OBS warns that it lowers video quality and does not fix the underlying connection problem. Set a sustainable baseline first, then investigate recurring instability. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide describes the trade-off.
Check stability and stream health
If Wi-Fi is unstable, OBS recommends trying a wired connection. Ethernet can improve reliability in that situation, but it does not lower bitrate or reduce data usage. If frames are dropping or the stream buffers, check upload stability and lower the bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. OBS’s buffering troubleshooting guide covers bitrate and connection conditions.

YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple playback formats so viewers can choose a version suited to their device and network. That does not reduce the source bitrate OBS sends to YouTube, so it is not a way to save the streamer’s upload data. YouTube’s transcoding explanation describes this distinction.
5. Check the content rights before a 24/7 broadcast
Lowering bitrate does not change YouTube’s rules for the material in a live stream. Make sure you have the necessary rights to every game capture, soundtrack, video, and other content you broadcast. A long-running stream also needs monitoring: a change in the scene or audio can affect both the picture quality needed and whether the content remains appropriate to broadcast.
