nohup your-encoder-command >stream.log 2>&1 < /dev/null &This protects against the SSH logout hangup signal; it does not restart a crashed encoder, bring a stopped or rebooted VM back online, or fix a network or YouTube ingestion failure. You need to check both that the process survived and that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
What SSH disconnecting does—and does not—mean
Your SSH terminal is the control session; the encoder process on the Oracle Cloud VM is what sends video to YouTube. Closing the terminal normally ends processes tied to that session. nohup makes a command ignore hangup signals so it can continue after logout, but GNU’s documentation is explicit that nohup does not background the command for you. That is why the example ends with &. GNU Coreutils: nohup invocation
This distinction matters: a process can still exist while its encoder has stopped producing usable video, lost network access, or been rejected by YouTube. SSH persistence is only one part of a working broadcast.

Start the encoder so it can survive logout
Use explicit input and log redirection

Replace
your-encoder-commandwith the encoder command you already use. Do not put a real YouTube stream key in a public script, shared terminal capture, or log. -
Run the command with standard output and errors written to a log, standard input detached from the terminal, and the command backgrounded:

nohup your-encoder-command >stream.log 2>&1 < /dev/null & -
Record the process ID printed by the shell after starting it. You can use that ID to check whether the process is still present after reconnecting.

Close SSH, reconnect to the same VM, and check the process and log. For example, if you noted the process ID, run

If you omit redirection, terminal output may go to nohup.out when it cannot be written to the terminal. Explicit logging makes it clearer where to look, but a log file is not proof that YouTube is receiving video.
What this command cannot recover from
- Encoder exit or crash:
nohupdoes not restart a command that has terminated. - VM stop or reboot: this command alone does not make the encoder start again when the machine starts.
- Network interruption: surviving logout does not guarantee the VM can still send data.
- YouTube ingestion issue: a live process can still be sending invalid, stalled, or misconfigured output.
If you need automatic restart after failure or startup after a reboot, investigate a process supervisor such as a service manager and follow instructions specific to your Oracle Linux image and version. The steps here do not configure or verify reboot persistence.

Confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream

In YouTube Studio, open the live control room for the scheduled stream and check stream health while the encoder is running.

Confirm the encoder is configured with YouTube’s stream URL and the correct stream key. Keep the key private; if it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.

Test with representative audio and movement before relying on the stream. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and choosing quality that fits the available upload connection.

Use constant bitrate (CBR) and prefer RTMPS where supported. YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP that encrypts data into and through Google’s servers. Consult YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for encoder settings suited to your resolution and frame rate.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after the encoder stops sending content. That is an archive behavior, not a promise that a stream will remain uninterrupted, and it should not be extended into a claim about streams lasting 12 hours or longer. Troubleshoot a stream that stops or goes offline
