A Raspberry Pi can send a looping prerecorded video to YouTube Live, but it is a do-it-yourself setup to test—not a verified recipe for uninterrupted 24/7 streaming. You need video you have the rights to broadcast, encoder software that can provide a continuous source, a YouTube stream URL and private stream key, and an output the Pi and your internet connection can sustain.
What you need before you start
- A Raspberry Pi and power, storage, and network connection suited to the workload you plan to test. No specific Pi model and software combination is established here as a guaranteed continuous-streaming setup.
- A local video file that you created or are authorized to stream in the relevant territories.
- Streaming or encoder software that can play the file repeatedly and send its output to YouTube Live. The exact software and loop command depend on your operating system and chosen encoder.
- A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. YouTube’s current getting-started guidance states that streamers must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.
This workflow is the same for a creator in India as elsewhere; the available sources do not establish local Pi prices, stock, or network performance. Check your board’s exact display connector and accessories before buying them: Raspberry Pi says flagship models since Pi 4B use micro-HDMI, and Pi 4 display modes depend on the display and configuration. See Raspberry Pi display guidance.
Set up the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room. Create a stream or select an existing encoder stream using YouTube’s current controls. YouTube provides the server URL and stream key for the encoder. Labels and locations can change, so follow the current Live Control Room interface.
- Copy the server URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in a screenshot, video, or command shared with others. YouTube describes stream keys as the stream’s password and address. If a key is exposed, reset it in the stream settings. See Manage live stream settings.
- Prefer RTMPS when your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which it describes as RTMP carried over a TLS/SSL connection for encryption. See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
Prepare a continuous video source on the Pi
Your encoder needs a source that keeps playing the video from the beginning after it reaches the end. Configure the playback or streaming software to loop the file, and route its output to the YouTube server URL and key. Because the exact loop controls and encoder commands depend on the software and Raspberry Pi OS version, confirm them in that software’s current documentation rather than relying on a generic command.
Do not assume a board that decodes a video can also encode and transmit it at the same resolution and frame rate. Raspberry Pi documentation says Pi 5 has H.265 hardware decoding enabled by default; that is a decoding capability, not evidence that a particular Pi can encode a live stream in H.265. Raspberry Pi has also published an H.264 encoding performance note for the Pi 5 series, but it does not establish that every streaming-software configuration will sustain a given output indefinitely. See Raspberry Pi video configuration and the Pi 5 announcement and performance information.

Choose encoder settings YouTube accepts
Set the output format in the encoder to match both YouTube’s ingest guidance and what your chosen Pi and software can produce reliably. YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its listed audio codecs include AAC and MP3. See YouTube recommended encoder settings.
YouTube’s listed recommended bitrates include the following. They are platform recommendations, not a guarantee about your Pi’s encoding capacity or your internet service’s real-world upload speed.

These are YouTube recommendations in the current encoder settings guidance, accessed October 3, 2026; the page does not state a publication year. Choose a mode your encoder can sustain and your available upload connection can carry reliably. YouTube advises checking connection speed and selecting quality accordingly; a speed test does not guarantee stability over a long event.
Test privately before you publish
- Start a private or unlisted test stream. Use the same Pi, source file, settings, and network you intend to use for the public stream.
- Check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room. Confirm that the video is moving, the loop restarts as intended, and the audio is present and in sync.
- Test changing content. Include sections with motion and sound rather than checking only a still frame or silent opening.
- Observe the Pi and connection for the duration you expect to run. Check for overheating, power or network interruptions, dropped frames, and encoder errors. The sources do not establish sustained performance or automatic recovery for a particular Pi build.
- Only then schedule or make the stream public. Keep the Live Control Room open as needed to monitor the event; do not treat a successful short test as proof of unattended 24/7 reliability.
Copyright, live-stream interruptions, and monetization
Only stream content you have rights to use
YouTube’s live-stream terms say the provider represents that it has the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of the live content on Google services, including music rights, and will comply with applicable laws in the territory where the stream is available. Public availability, attribution, or the fact a file plays technically does not establish permission to rebroadcast it. The cited sources do not decide how a particular license or Indian copyright exception applies. Review YouTube’s Terms of Service and obtain rights that cover your intended use and territories.

Expect YouTube’s copyright scanning
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. A match can lead to a placeholder feed and warning; if the content remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. Even licensed material can be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel. See Copyright issues with live streams.
Permission does not guarantee monetization eligibility
YouTube’s monetization policy applies to live streams. Its July 15, 2025 policy update calls repetitive or mass-produced material “inauthentic content”; its reused-content policy says republished material without significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value may make a channel ineligible for monetization. YouTube treats reused-content review separately from copyright enforcement, so permission to use footage does not by itself make it eligible for monetization. See YouTube channel monetization policies.

Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | What to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | Server URL, stream key, encoder connection status, and whether live streaming is enabled on the channel. | Re-enter the current URL and key from Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder. |
| The feed connects but YouTube reports poor stream health | Upload stability, selected bitrate, and whether the Pi can sustain the chosen output. | Run a connection test, lower the output mode or bitrate, and test again. YouTube recommends choosing quality that fits the available upload connection. |
| Video or audio is missing, frozen, or out of sync | Local playback, loop behavior, encoder input, audio codec, and the Live Control Room preview. | Test with a moving clip and audible sound; confirm the encoder is receiving both tracks and that the loop restarts correctly. |
| The stream stops after running for a while | Power, temperature, network interruptions, encoder errors, and whether the playback process exited. | Review logs and test the same build for longer before relying on it. The reviewed sources do not provide a tested watchdog or automatic-restart configuration for a Pi. |
| YouTube replaces the video or interrupts the live event | Copyright match notifications and whether the channel is allowlisted by the rights owner for licensed third-party content. | Use cleared material and follow YouTube’s notice and rights-holder process; simply restarting the encoder may not resolve a rights match. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube loop without keeping a Pi, computer, or home connection running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera.
