To switch a continuous YouTube radio stream between lofi and ambient music, automate the change in the playout layer—not by changing ordinary YouTube playlists. With OBS, prepare separate playback scenes or states for each set, schedule or trigger the switch, and keep the same encoder output going to YouTube. Test the handoff, playlist endings, and recovery before leaving it unattended.
How playlist switching works in a 24/7 live stream
YouTube receives a continuing live feed from an encoder or playout service. The encoder-side workflow decides what audio and visuals go out at any moment. Creating two standard YouTube playlists does not, by itself, schedule a transition inside one continuous live broadcast. YouTube documents encoder streaming for live production inputs such as overlays and external hardware in its live-streaming guidance.
For a local setup, keep OBS streaming to the same YouTube broadcast while changing the internal scene or media source that supplies the program. A community discussion describes using VLC playlists through OBS and suggests separate scenes with Advanced Scene Switcher for automation; it is an example, not official documentation or a universal recipe. Set up lofi and ambient programming in OBS
1. Confirm YouTube live access
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days to livestream. Check the channel’s eligibility and current YouTube Live controls before building the schedule. YouTube also requires live content to follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. 2. Prepare distinct, cleared media sets
Organize your lofi tracks and ambient tracks into clearly named sets, such as “Lofi daytime” and “Ambient night.” Use audio and visuals that you have permission to broadcast and, if applicable, monetize. Keep the programming blocks distinct so the schedule or automation rule can select the intended set without relying on manual playlist edits during a live session.
3. Build a playback state for each set
In OBS, create a scene or other identifiable playback state for each program block, with its corresponding audio source and visuals. One community approach uses separate scenes connected to VLC playlists and an automation plugin such as Advanced Scene Switcher. Exact controls and behavior may vary by OBS version, operating system, plugin version, and source configuration; consult the current OBS and plugin documentation for installation and menu details rather than assuming one set of clicks applies to every system.

4. Choose a switching rule and test it
Decide whether the transition happens at a set time, after a chosen duration, or when a playlist ends. Configure that rule in your chosen automation workflow, then observe a complete change from lofi to ambient and back. The forum discussion reports variable behavior when playlist contents were edited, so do not assume that a live playlist edit will always take effect without restarting a source.
- Confirm the next playlist starts and the outgoing playlist does not unexpectedly repeat or stop.
- Listen for silence, clipping, abrupt overlap, or other unwanted audio changes. A configuration that switches scenes does not automatically guarantee a seamless crossfade.
- Check whether visuals change with the music and whether the transition looks intentional.
- Test what happens at the end of every playlist and after OBS or the media source is restarted.
- Verify that the YouTube broadcast remains active while OBS changes the internal playback state.
5. Keep the encoder running
Start the YouTube broadcast from OBS using YouTube’s encoder workflow, and leave OBS sending the continuing output while your scene or playback automation changes what viewers hear and see. For local playout, the computer, OBS, media, power, and internet connection all need to remain available. If you want a more technical self-hosted alternative, a third-party guide describes using FFmpeg on a VPS; it involves server setup and ongoing maintenance and is not required for an OBS workflow: RadioTech Studio’s FFmpeg and VPS guide.

Choose between local playout and cloud playout
The right route depends on where you want to manage transitions and what you are prepared to keep running. The OBS forum example and the third-party VPS guide demonstrate possible approaches, but they do not establish a neutral reliability comparison. Consider these practical differences:

Troubleshoot common switching problems
The stream keeps playing the old set
Check that the automation rule targets the correct scene or playback state, that the intended source is active, and that the playlist is configured as expected. Because live playlist edits may not reliably update in place, test a source restart or use a planned scene transition rather than relying on an untested edit.
There is a gap or overlap between tracks
Check the outgoing playlist’s end behavior, the incoming playlist’s start, and any scene-transition timing. Test with the exact sources and transition method you plan to use. Do not assume that scene automation provides audio crossfading.
The broadcast stops when you leave
With local OBS, the computer and encoder process must keep running, and the power and internet connection must remain available. If you need the broadcast to continue with your home computer off, consider a managed cloud playout service or a server-based setup, taking into account the maintenance each requires.
YouTube restricts or does not allow the stream
Verify that the channel meets YouTube’s livestream eligibility requirements, then check the live-control interface for restrictions or policy notices. Confirm that you have rights to the music and visuals; a track being available in a playlist does not prove it is cleared for your broadcast.
HLS is a separate ingestion choice
The OBS workflow above does not require HLS-specific configuration. If you intentionally use YouTube’s HLS ingestion, Google’s documentation calls for 1–4 second segments, MPEG-TS segments, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments; it also notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Follow the current YouTube HLS ingestion guide for that protocol rather than applying these settings to every live stream.
