You can run a YouTube stream around the clock with OBS on a local computer or with an encoder hosted in the cloud. YouTube’s Live Control Room handles the broadcast setup and monitoring; your encoder sends the video using the stream URL and key. OBS keeps the work on your computer, while a cloud service moves it off-site. Neither option makes uninterrupted streaming automatic: power, connectivity, configuration, recovery, and YouTube’s archive limits still matter.
What “24/7 streaming” means on YouTube
A 24/7 schedule is an operating goal, not a YouTube uptime promise. The stream can still stop if the encoder, power, connection, host, or ingest fails. YouTube’s own setup flow pairs Live Control Room with an encoder: YouTube provides the connection details, and the encoder sends the stream. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
For this comparison, OBS means running the encoder on your own computer. “Cloud” can mean a virtual machine or a managed streaming service; the interface and recovery behavior vary by provider. YouTube’s documentation explains how to connect an encoder, but does not certify a cloud provider’s reliability or price.
Set up a YouTube encoder stream in Live Control Room
- Enable live streaming. Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming enablement guidance.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. Add its title, description, privacy setting, and other details. The exact labels may change; follow the current Live Control Room setup flow.
- Connect the encoder. In OBS, select YouTube as the service if available. Otherwise, enter the server URL and stream key shown by YouTube. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP; use it when your encoder offers it. Treat the key like a password: do not share or publish it, and reset it if exposed. See YouTube’s encoder settings and connection guidance.
- Choose video settings. Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in the encoder using YouTube’s current published guidance for the format you intend to send. Bitrate depends on the selected format, so check the current table rather than copying a value meant for another resolution or frame rate. YouTube transcodes the incoming feed for different viewer devices and network conditions. The reviewed guidance does not establish minimum hardware for a particular OBS scene or workload.
- Start and confirm the broadcast. Start the encoder and wait for its preview to appear in Live Control Room. For a scheduled encoder stream, select Go live in Studio once the preview is ready. Watch the stream-health status and analytics as the stream runs.
- End the broadcast deliberately. Stop sending from the encoder, then end the stream in Studio. If you need a replay, plan session lengths and a separate local recording; a continuous feed does not guarantee a complete archive.
OBS on your PC or a cloud encoder?
| Decision | Local OBS | Cloud-hosted encoder |
|---|---|---|
| Where encoding runs | On your computer | On a remote host or in a managed service |
| What must keep working | The computer must stay on, with usable local power and internet, and OBS must keep running. | Your home computer can be off after setup, but the cloud host, its configuration, and the provider’s network still matter; you need access to configure and monitor the stream. |
| Recovery after a failure | You or local automation must restore the encoder and connection. | Depends on the host’s features and your configuration. Verify restart behavior, monitoring, and recovery claims with the provider. |
| Costs to check | Device use, electricity, and your internet service. | Hosting, storage, and possible data-transfer charges; check current rates and whether a suitable region is available in India. |
| Control over the setup | Direct control of OBS scenes, sources, and installed software. | Depends on whether you get a full desktop or virtual machine, or a managed streaming interface. |
| What is established here | OBS is an encoder. No hardware performance claim is established for your workload. | No named provider, India-region availability, current price, or service-level guarantee is established. |
When local OBS makes sense
Use local OBS if your existing equipment and operating environment suit the stream and you can keep the computer, power, and connection available. You have direct access to scenes and sources, but continuity depends on that local setup and on someone—or suitable automation—responding to interruptions.

When to consider cloud hosting
Cloud hosting is worth considering when you do not want a local computer running continuously. Before choosing a provider, check whether its region works for your needs, how it handles restarts and persistent configuration, what network egress and storage cost, what support is included, and whether its terms cover your intended use. Compare both setups with the same resolution, frame rate, source video, audio, and schedule; otherwise, the cost and performance comparison is not like for like.
Run the stream continuously and monitor it
Plan what you will do if the encoder, computer or host, power, or network stops working. Reconnection and automatic recovery depend on the specific encoder and host configuration; do not assume they are enabled. Live Control Room reports stream health and error messages, alongside real-time indicators such as concurrent viewers, duration, chat rate, views, and average view duration. These help you spot ingest problems and audience activity, but do not prove that every viewer’s connection is receiving the stream correctly. See YouTube’s guide to monitoring live-stream analytics.

Plan archives and DVR for a long broadcast
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That means one 24-hour broadcast is not a safe way to guarantee a complete replay. If automatic archives matter, plan separate sessions under 12 hours and keep a local recording as a backup. Check YouTube’s archive guidance.
DVR rewind is another limitation: for streams longer than 12 hours, YouTube says rewind may be limited or unavailable. Tell viewers what to expect if you are running a longer broadcast. Details are in YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Rights and monetization still apply to a 24/7 stream
You need the rights required to stream every part of the content, including relevant music rights. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights for use of the live content on Google services worldwide and to comply with applicable laws. Read YouTube’s live-stream terms before broadcasting material you did not create or license.
A continuous schedule does not by itself make a channel or its programming eligible for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams and require original, authentic content; repetitive or mass-produced material may be ineligible. Assess the actual programming and channel status against YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Troubleshooting common setup problems
- No live-streaming option: Check that the channel is verified and meets YouTube’s live-stream eligibility requirements, including the absence of restrictions in the previous 90 days. Start with YouTube’s enablement guidance.
- Encoder connects but no preview appears: Confirm that the encoder is sending to the current server URL with the correct stream key, then check the stream-health messages in Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder.
- Scheduled stream is not public yet: For a scheduled encoder broadcast, wait for the preview and select Go live in Live Control Room. Starting the encoder alone may not complete that step.
- Stream stops during a long run: Identify whether the encoder, local power or internet, or cloud host stopped sending. Restore the failed component and confirm that YouTube receives the feed again. Automatic reconnect or recovery depends on your encoder and host configuration.
- Replay is missing or incomplete: A stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured. Use sessions shorter than 12 hours if you need YouTube’s automatic archive, and make a local recording backup for important material.
- Viewers cannot rewind far enough: DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Consider session breaks or explain the limitation to viewers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I leave OBS running overnight or for several days?
You can leave a local encoder operating, but continuity depends on the computer, power, internet connection, and encoder process remaining available.
Does YouTube guarantee a complete replay of a 24-hour stream?
No. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; a local recording is the safer backup.
Can I stream copyrighted music in a 24/7 loop?
Only if you have the necessary rights for the music and other content. A continuous schedule does not exempt the stream from YouTube’s rights or monetization policies.
