For the simplest setup, start a YouTube live stream and use its Share > Embed code. If you need a dedicated web player and more control over delivery, use a managed host such as Cloudflare Stream or an event-oriented service such as Vimeo. Your regular website host usually does not, by itself, receive and distribute an encoder’s live feed.
Choose how the live video will reach your website
A live website broadcast has two separate parts: contribution (sending video from your encoder to a service) and playback (showing the service’s player to visitors). The service handles the stream between those two steps; your page embeds its player.

For most first-time website streams, begin with YouTube’s embed if a public-platform player is acceptable. Choose managed hosting when you need its ingest-to-player workflow or a custom HLS/DASH playback path. Do not assume an ordinary web host can take an encoder’s raw RTMP output and distribute it to viewers.
What you need before going live
- A live video source: a webcam, capture card, screen, window, or another OBS scene source. A webcam is optional if you are streaming a game or screen.
- Audio input if the broadcast needs narration, game audio, or other sound. A separate microphone is optional; OBS can capture microphone audio.
- An encoder such as OBS, configured and tested before the real broadcast. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends configuring output and testing settings first.
- A destination service and its stream configuration. For Cloudflare Stream, create a live input and use its stream key; the service accepts RTMPS or SRT.
- Access to edit the website page where the player will appear.
How to embed a YouTube live stream
- Set up your broadcast in YouTube. Create or schedule the live video in YouTube Studio and configure your encoder to send the broadcast to YouTube using the stream details YouTube provides. Keep stream keys private: anyone with the key may be able to contribute to the associated input.
- Configure and test OBS. Add the needed webcam, capture card, screen, window, and audio sources. Set the output for your intended destination, then run a short test so you can check video, sound, and scene layout before the event.
- Open the live video’s sharing options. On YouTube, open the video or playlist, choose Share, then Embed.
- Copy the embed HTML. YouTube provides code to place the player on your page. For privacy-enhanced mode, change the embed host to
youtube-nocookie.com; this affects personalization but is not a guarantee that all cookies are removed or that every privacy-law obligation is met. - Paste the code into your site. Use the website builder’s HTML or embed block, or the equivalent editor feature. Save or publish the page.
- Check the page as a viewer. Open it in a separate browser or on another device. Confirm the player loads, the stream starts, audio is audible, the player fits the page, and the offline or upcoming state is what you intend.
If your website or app is directed to children, YouTube says you must self-designate it using its tools, including when using privacy-enhanced mode. Age-restricted YouTube videos cannot be watched on most third-party sites, so verify that the intended audience can view the broadcast where you embed it.

How to use managed live hosting
- Create a live input with the provider. Cloudflare Stream documents a workflow in which you create a live input and receive a stream key.
- Configure the encoder to contribute to that input. Cloudflare Stream accepts RTMPS or SRT. Use the endpoint and key supplied by the service rather than treating your website server as the ingest destination.
- Start a short test broadcast. Confirm that the service receives the feed and that video and audio are present before sharing the page.
- Add the player to your page. Cloudflare Stream’s dashboard can generate iframe code for a live input. Alternatively, use a player that supports the HLS or DASH delivery format the service provides.
- Test the complete viewer experience. Check the published page on the devices and browsers your audience will use, including the pre-live and offline states.
Managed hosting means the provider handles the path from ingest through encoding and delivery. It does not remove the need to check current usage limits, plan entitlements, or pricing. For a custom player, confirm it supports the provider’s delivery format rather than assuming any video player will work.
When Vimeo or a custom player makes sense
Vimeo live events
Vimeo documents embedding a live-event player and viewer engagement tools. Its support article identifies Advanced or Premium plans, or an Enterprise plan with the Events feature added, as requirements. Plan names and entitlements can change, so check Vimeo’s current plan details before building an event around a feature.

HLS or DASH playback
A separate HLS/DASH player can provide a more customized viewing experience, but it adds technical ownership: the live service must deliver a compatible stream, and the site needs a player that can play it. Cloudflare Stream says viewers can use any player supporting HLS or DASH.
Latency and YouTube HLS contribution
Do not confuse YouTube’s player embed with HLS contribution settings. YouTube says HLS ingestion has higher latency than RTMP because HLS transmits video in segments rather than as one continuous stream. Its HLS setup specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. These are protocol-specific contribution requirements, not settings you need to configure when simply embedding a YouTube player.

Common problems and fixes
- The player appears, but there is no live picture. Confirm the encoder is sending to the intended destination and that the live input or video is active. For managed hosting, check that the correct live input and key are configured.
- The stream plays on the platform but not on the website. Re-copy the provider’s embed code and confirm it was placed in an HTML/embed block that permits iframe content. Test the published page, not only the editor preview.
- Viewers cannot watch an embedded YouTube video. Check whether it is age-restricted; YouTube says age-restricted videos cannot be watched on most third-party sites. Test while signed out as well as in your usual account.
- The site uses privacy-enhanced mode, but you need broader privacy assurances. The
youtube-nocookie.comhost changes personalization behavior; it does not promise zero cookies or establish compliance with every privacy law. Assess the site’s privacy requirements separately. - The live feed has more delay than expected. If contributing through YouTube HLS, its documentation says HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Confirm that the chosen contribution protocol suits the event’s interaction needs.
- The stream key may have been exposed. Treat keys as credentials. Replace or rotate the key in the streaming service and update the encoder before broadcasting again.
- The encoder shows video but the website player is silent. Check audio capture in OBS, the selected input source, and the viewer player’s mute state during a test broadcast.
