1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteH.264 is the safer default when you are unsure what a streaming platform or ingest protocol accepts. Choose H.265/HEVC when your destination explicitly supports it, your encoder can handle it in real time, and its bandwidth efficiency or HDR support helps your setup. Neither codec is universally better: the whole path—from encoder through ingest to viewer playback—has to support your choice.
H.264 vs. H.265: what changes for a live stream?
H.264 (also called AVC) and H.265 (also called HEVC) are video compression codecs. They describe how video is encoded; they are not streaming platforms or delivery protocols. Your practical choice depends on whether your encoder can produce the codec, the platform accepts it over the selected ingest protocol, and the viewers’ playback path can decode it.
HEVC can provide better compression than H.264. In a suitable workflow, that may mean higher quality at a given bitrate or comparable quality at a lower bitrate. It does not guarantee a fixed bitrate reduction: the result depends on the video, encoder, settings, and platform. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming Ingestion Protocol Comparison describes the advantage qualitatively, not as a universal percentage.
Which codec should you use?
| Situation | Practical choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You are not sure which formats the platform or protocol accepts | H.264 | It is the compatibility-first choice; check the destination’s current requirements before changing it. |
| Your destination and selected ingest protocol explicitly accept HEVC | Consider H.265/HEVC | It may use bandwidth more efficiently if the encoder and playback path support it. |
| Your live workflow requires HDR | Check the platform’s HDR ingest requirements; HEVC may be required or recommended | YouTube recommends HEVC for HDR live video. HDR requirements are platform-specific. |
| You need to send to several platforms or outputs | Plan around the most restrictive destination, or use separate encodes | Codec and protocol support can differ between destinations. |
For a YouTube Live stream, current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, up to 60 fps. Availability can depend on the ingest protocol, so confirm the protocol and destination settings you will actually use rather than assuming every listed codec works in every configuration. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and its ingestion protocol comparison.

Check the encoder and ingest path before going live
Confirm platform and protocol support
Check the streaming platform’s current codec guidance for your selected ingest protocol, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and HDR format if relevant. A platform accepting a codec somewhere in its workflow does not establish that it accepts that codec through every protocol or account setup.
For Twitch, use Twitch’s own current Broadcasting Guidelines to check ingest bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and encoder considerations. Do not infer current Twitch codec acceptance from YouTube’s guidance.

Verify real-time encoder support
A codec appearing in streaming software does not mean your computer can encode it smoothly at the resolution and frame rate you want. OBS documents HEVC support through specified hardware encoders: NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VT. Check the current OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide for your software version and platform, then test with the encoder and workload you will use live.
OBS’s guidance ranking codecs for high-quality local recordings is about recording quality, not a general recommendation for live streaming. Live use still depends on destination acceptance, ingest protocol, encoder performance, and playback support.

Account for HLS packaging rules where applicable
For Apple-device HLS authoring, Apple’s specification permits H.264 and HEVC but sets different packaging requirements: H.264 may use fragmented MP4 or MPEG transport streams, while HEVC uses fragmented MP4 under that specification. Profiles, levels, and live bandwidth conformance also matter. These are requirements for Apple-device HLS authoring, not a blanket rule for every HLS player. Consult Apple’s HLS authoring specification.
Set the stream for the platform, not just the codec
Codec selection does not replace the rest of the encoder setup. YouTube’s current guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed four seconds. It also provides resolution-specific bitrate guidance; check its current table for your chosen resolution and frame rate before streaming, since those recommendations can change. These settings are YouTube guidance, not universal settings for every destination.

- Choose a resolution and frame rate your encoder can sustain while handling the game or other video workload.
- Set bitrate within the current platform recommendation for that output; do not assume HEVC automatically permits a particular reduction.
- Set the keyframe interval and rate-control mode to match the destination’s current guidance.
- If using HDR, verify the required codec, color format, and ingest settings for the platform and delivery path.
- Run a representative test with fast motion and complex scenes. Confirm the stream is stable and that the result looks acceptable at the intended bitrate.
Does H.265 save bitrate compared with H.264?
It can, but there is no dependable universal savings figure. HEVC’s compression efficiency is a directional advantage, not a promise that it will use half the bitrate or that two streams at nominally comparable settings will look identical. The actual result varies with content and encoder implementation, and the platform must accept HEVC over your chosen ingest path.
Common codec-selection problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The platform rejects the stream or does not connect | The codec is unsupported for the selected ingest protocol or configuration | Recheck the destination’s current codec and protocol requirements; use H.264 if support is uncertain. |
| The stream stutters or encoding overload appears | The encoder cannot sustain the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, or workload in real time | Check hardware encoder availability and system load; test a lower output workload before going live. |
| Image quality is poor despite choosing HEVC | Codec choice alone does not determine quality; bitrate, scene complexity, encoder settings, and platform handling also matter | Review the platform’s bitrate guidance and test representative motion rather than relying on a presumed compression ratio. |
| HDR does not appear as expected | One or more parts of the HDR workflow may not meet the destination’s ingest or format requirements | Verify the platform’s current HDR guidance and the encoder’s supported format end to end. |
