FFmpeg can send video from a cloud VPS to YouTube Live over RTMP or RTMPS, provided the VPS can handle the chosen workload and sustain the stream’s outbound bitrate. A free VPS is useful for testing, but its advertised CPU, memory and transfer allowance do not guarantee encoding performance, regional availability or reliable 24/7 operation.
How the setup works
FFmpeg reads a media input, encodes or relays audio and video, then sends the output to YouTube’s live ingest server. YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS; its current guidance recommends RTMPS, the SSL-secured option. For RTMPS, use a valid YouTube endpoint and stream path, connect on port 443, and send RTMP over SSL. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion documentation and the FFmpeg documentation.
The VPS must be able to read the source file or input, perform any required encoding, and maintain enough outbound network capacity for the stream. A provider’s free-tier specification is not a guarantee that a particular FFmpeg job will run successfully.
Choose a bitrate and compatible output
YouTube’s encoder guidance includes these H.264 bitrate recommendations. Its minimums are not good targets for a stream that needs headroom: reserve additional capacity for audio, protocol overhead, other traffic and network variation. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and monitoring stream health with representative content. The figures below are YouTube’s listed values, not a promise of performance from a VPS.

| H.264 output | Listed minimum | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These numbers are specific to H.264 and the listed frame rates. YouTube also lists 1080p30 H.265/AV1 at 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended; do not apply that figure to a different codec or frame rate. Its current ingest guidance supports H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds). For stereo audio, YouTube lists 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
YouTube recommends default resolution detection unless you have a reason to configure the output manually. Match the chosen output to the source and the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity; a nominal bandwidth ceiling is not the same as guaranteed sustained bitrate.

Free VPS options and their limits
| Offer | What the provider currently documents | What that means for this use |
|---|---|---|
| Oracle Cloud Always Free | Up to two E2.1.Micro instances, each with 1/8 OCPU and 1 GB RAM; A1 Arm compute equivalent to 2 OCPUs and 12 GB memory; and 10 TB monthly outbound transfer. Always Free compute must be provisioned in the account’s home region, where capacity may be unavailable. | A possible place to experiment, not a guarantee that a VM can encode a chosen stream or remain available. Oracle also documents an idle-instance reclamation policy. Check eligibility, current limits and region capacity. Oracle Always Free resources. |
| Oracle trial | $300 in credits for up to 30 days; trial resources are distinct from Always Free resources. Oracle says excess A1 resources may be disabled and later deleted unless the account upgrades or reduces them to the Always Free ceiling. | Temporary credits are not perpetual free compute. Check resource allocation and what happens when the trial ends. Oracle Cloud Free Tier. |
| AWS Free Tier | The current page advertises up to $200 in credits over six months for new customers. It says the free account closes after six months or when credits run out unless upgraded. | This is a limited new-customer offer, not an always-free VPS guarantee. Check current eligibility and service terms before relying on it. AWS Free Tier. |
Provider offers and account conditions can change. Oracle’s published allowance does not establish that every account can provision a VM in its home region, while AWS’s credit offer does not by itself establish which service or configuration is suitable for a particular stream. None of these published offers certifies a specific FFmpeg workload or 24/7 continuity.
Set up an FFmpeg stream safely
- Prepare the YouTube live event. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and obtain its ingest endpoint and stream key. Follow YouTube’s current interface and encoder guidance; labels can change. Keep the key private and do not paste it into public logs, screenshots or a command that other users can read.
- Provision and secure the VPS. Choose an eligible VM in a region where it is available, install FFmpeg using the provider’s supported package or build method, and ensure the VM can access your media source. Restrict account access and avoid exposing credentials in scripts or shared shell history.
- Choose whether to encode or relay. Transcoding requires CPU or supported hardware-encoding capability sufficient for the chosen codec, frame size and frame rate. A relay of already encoded media can use a different workload, but still needs compatible input, audio/video streams and stable network egress. Provider specifications alone do not establish whether either workload will perform adequately.
- Configure the output to YouTube’s requirements. Use RTMPS where possible, the matching codec and resolution, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and a bitrate suited to the format and available sustained egress. Use YouTube’s default resolution detection unless manual selection is needed. Keep the stream key out of any published command or log.
- Start a private or unlisted test. Use representative motion and audio, then inspect YouTube Studio’s stream health and messages. Check for dropped frames, unstable bitrate, encoder overload, missing audio and reconnects before relying on the stream.
- Monitor continuity and costs. Watch the VPS process, outbound usage and provider status. A free allowance can be subject to capacity, account, idle-use and trial-expiry conditions; do not treat a test stream as proof of uninterrupted long-term service.
Can a free VPS keep a 24/7 stream running?
It may be possible to run a continuous stream, but the documented free-tier terms do not guarantee the reliability needed for a 24/7 broadcast. Relevant risks include limited compute for encoding, unavailable capacity in the required region, outbound transfer limits, network variation, idle reclamation and expiring credits. Test the full workload and review the provider’s continuity terms before making the VPS part of a channel’s operating plan.

Common problems and fixes
- YouTube reports a weak or unstable stream: check actual sustained VPS egress and stream-health messages. Lower resolution, frame rate or bitrate to a level with headroom, and check whether other traffic is competing for bandwidth.
- Encoding overload or irregular output: reduce the encoding workload or relay compatible pre-encoded media instead. The free-tier CPU and memory figures do not establish that a specific encode will work.
- RTMPS connection fails: verify the YouTube endpoint and path, port 443 access, SSL connection, and that the current stream key belongs to the selected live event. Do not expose the key while troubleshooting.
- Stream stops after a trial or account change: check credits, resource allocation and account status. Oracle trial resources can be subject to expiry-related limits; AWS says the free account closes after six months or credit exhaustion unless upgraded.
- VM cannot be provisioned: verify that you are using the account’s home region for Oracle Always Free compute and check current capacity. Oracle documents that regional host capacity can be unavailable.
Copyright and YouTube policy still apply
Using FFmpeg or a cloud server does not grant rights to the video or audio being broadcast. Use media you own or are licensed to stream, and review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream policies before broadcasting. A continuous stream also does not guarantee eligibility for monetization: channels remain subject to YouTube’s applicable monetization and reused-content rules.
