For a new OBS setup, use Waveform, add its visualizer source to your radio scene, and select the OBS audio source carrying the jazz program. The crucial check is that the visualizer moves with the music—not with an unrelated microphone or desktop sound. Then test the full OBS-to-YouTube path before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.
Choose a visualizer plugin
Waveform is the better-documented choice for a new installation. The OBS resource listing identifies version 1.9.1, last updated July 14, 2026, a minimum OBS Studio version of 27.0.0, and 64-bit Windows, macOS, and Linux support. Its available displays include frequency-spectrum curves, bars, stepped bars and circular variants, plus peak and RMS meters and waveform displays. Check the listing for current compatibility and installation instructions before installing or updating: Waveform on OBS Project Forums.
Spectralizer is an older option mainly relevant if you already use it. Its OBS resource page lists version 1.3.4, last updated January 28, 2021, Windows and Linux support, and a minimum OBS version of 24.0.0. The author says it has been deprecated in favor of Waveform, which offers more options; the resource does not list macOS support. Its description says, “This plugin allows you to create audio visualizations of obs audio sources.”
Add the visualizer to your jazz scene
- Check compatibility. Confirm your OBS version and operating system meet the current requirements on the Waveform resource page.
- Install Waveform. Follow the download and installation instructions on its resource page. Restart OBS if the installer or plugin instructions request it. Installation details can vary by operating system, so use the published instructions rather than assuming a file path.
- Open the radio scene. In OBS, select the scene used for the jazz stream and add the plugin’s visualizer as a source. The precise source label and available controls may depend on the installed plugin version.
- Choose the program audio source. Configure the visualizer to use the source carrying the jazz playback. If the program comes from a Media Source or another dedicated OBS source, select that source where the plugin supports it. Check the OBS audio mixer while the music plays; do not select a microphone or desktop-audio source unless that is actually where the program audio is routed.
- Pick a display and compose it. Choose a spectrum, waveform or meter style, then resize and position it over your background artwork. Keep titles, logos and other important art visible, and make the motion legible at your intended stream resolution.
- Preview with the real music. Play representative jazz audio and confirm the visualizer responds to it, stays visible and does not cover essential artwork. This is a recommended check, not a claim that any particular setup has been tested.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live and test the signal
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream in Live Control Room. Copy the stream URL and stream key.
- In OBS, enter the URL and key in the stream settings, or use the YouTube connection option if your OBS version offers it. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it or include it in screenshots.
- Start the OBS encoder and wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room before going live. YouTube recommends testing ahead of time with audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- For a meaningful test, use the same playback source, visualizer scene, audio level, resolution and frame rate you plan to use. Listen for silence or clipping, check that the visualizer follows the jazz, and review YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators.
A successful preview confirms that the test signal reached YouTube; it does not guarantee that a long-running broadcast will never disconnect.

Set encoder quality and audio deliberately
YouTube recommends choosing quality to match a reliable upload connection, checking upload speed, and monitoring stream health. Its encoder guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Use the current bitrate table for your selected codec and resolution rather than treating one bitrate as universal: YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
| Example YouTube recommendation | Video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps, H.264 | 8 Mbps |
YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps among its recommended advanced stereo-audio settings. These are YouTube-published recommendations, not a measurement of your connection or a promise of uninterrupted streaming. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain with headroom for variation, then test the complete scene.

A visualizer adds scene work. OBS cautions that meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee that a system can stream or record; CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. During a representative test, watch OBS rendering and encoding status rather than assuming that a machine meeting minimum requirements can run an all-day stream. See OBS system requirements.
Plan for 24/7 continuity and YouTube archives
The visualizer changes what appears in the OBS scene; it does not keep the computer, playback, internet connection or YouTube broadcast available. A local OBS-based 24/7 plan needs a stable music source or playlist, dependable power and internet, monitoring, and a way to recover if playback, the encoder or the network stops. A plugin alone does not provide failover or uptime.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a continuous broadcast longer than 12 hours will be archived as one uninterrupted video. Treat live continuity and archive planning as separate concerns, and check YouTube’s current live policies and dashboard before promising a 24/7 recording. The encoder setup and archive guidance is in YouTube’s live-stream help.
