Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou can run a continuous acoustic guitar radio stream on YouTube with FFmpeg by feeding it a looping audio source and a persistent video image or visual loop, then publishing the combined signal to YouTube Live. The process is only as reliable as its host, network, restart handling, and music rights: a command running on a laptop is not an unattended 24/7 system if that laptop sleeps or loses its connection.
What you need before you start
- Music you are authorized to stream live. Confirm the rights cover the intended platform, territories, and duration. Keep licenses and permissions available, and check whether the rights owner must allowlist your channel in Content ID.
- An audio source and a video layer. Use prepared recordings or another lawful audio feed, plus a still image or looped visual. YouTube Live is an audio-video stream, so the output must keep sending video as well as audio.
- A persistent host. Use a computer that will remain powered and connected, or a remote VPS. For unattended operation, arrange for FFmpeg to start at boot, restart after failure, and retain logs.
- A YouTube Live stream configuration. You will need the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to publish to your channel.
FFmpeg and a host are implementation choices, not YouTube requirements. YouTube distinguishes the broadcast viewers watch from the stream configuration that carries the encoder signal; continuous publishing and event management are related but separate. Google’s explanation of broadcasts and streams describes that distinction.
Prepare the music and visual
Clear the recording rights first
YouTube’s livestream terms say streamers represent that they have the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of live content, including music rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other participants. The permissions required in practice depend on the agreements and territories involved. See YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can trigger a warning or placeholder, and an unresolved match can interrupt or terminate the stream. Even with a license, the rights owner may need to add your channel to an allowlist. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance explains the process.

Do not assume a Creator Music license permits live radio use: YouTube says its licensed and revenue-sharing tracks are for long-form videos, not live streams. Creator Music usage details set out that limitation.
Make the playlist and video layer predictable
Normalize your files to a consistent format and sample rate where practical. Check the playlist’s repeat behavior, gaps, volume changes, and transitions; a loop setting does not guarantee a seamless musical boundary. For the video, use a still cover image, branded card, or looped scene in a horizontal frame. Choose a modest resolution and frame rate that match the visual and the host’s sustained upload capacity. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish a special minimum resolution for a static radio image.

Configure YouTube Live for FFmpeg
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the broadcast/stream setup you intend to use.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the encoder. Keep the key private; do not paste it into public scripts, screenshots, repositories, or logs.
- Use RTMP or, preferably, RTMPS for the normal FFmpeg encoder path. YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the connection to Google’s servers.
- Plan an H.264 video and AAC stereo audio output using constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends AAC stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps, a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and video settings/bitrates selected for the chosen resolution and frame rate.
- Choose the video bitrate from YouTube’s recommended range for your output resolution and frame rate, then confirm the host can sustain that upload rate with headroom for network variation. YouTube can transcode an incoming live stream into different viewing formats; that does not remove the need for a stable encoder feed.
Check the current settings against YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance before launch, since its recommendations and your channel configuration may change.
RTMP/RTMPS or HLS?
| Ingest method | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP/RTMPS | The ordinary FFmpeg-to-YouTube encoder route for a straightforward H.264/AAC radio stream. | YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport; it is the simpler standard choice for this setup. |
| HLS | A specific workflow requires HLS ingestion or compatible features. | YouTube requires a supported HLS configuration, including HTTPS, TS segments, and a rolling playlist. Segment delivery has higher latency. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance. |
For an acoustic guitar radio stream without a special HLS requirement, use RTMP/RTMPS.

Run FFmpeg as an unattended service
The exact FFmpeg command depends on the audio source, visual source, installed build, and host. Avoid copying a generic command without adapting its inputs and output options. The output must continuously contain both audio and video, encode to the formats YouTube expects, and publish to the server URL with your private stream key.
Build in process and host recovery
- Run FFmpeg on an always-on computer or remote VPS with a reliable upstream connection.
- Use a service supervisor, such as systemd on a compatible Linux host, to start FFmpeg at boot and restart it if the process exits.
- Set appropriate retry behavior and delays, and keep logs for diagnosis. FFmpeg’s protocol options include reconnect behavior for network errors and EOF handling for some inputs, but flags depend on the input protocol and installed build.
- Distinguish input reconnection from output recovery: reconnecting a source does not necessarily restart the complete publishing process after YouTube or the network drops the output.
- Do not describe the setup as immortal. The host can go offline, the network can fail, a process can hang, or YouTube can interrupt the stream; a supervisor and a recovery plan reduce downtime but cannot guarantee none.
Consult the installed version’s options and FFmpeg’s protocol documentation before selecting reconnect flags. The protocol documentation describes network-error reconnects, EOF behavior for live/endless streams, and retry controls.

Test the complete stream and monitor it
- Start with a private or unlisted test in YouTube Studio using the actual audio and visual sources.
- Listen for clipping, silence, abrupt level changes, and audible gaps at playlist boundaries; check that the image has the intended aspect ratio and video continues steadily.
- Check encoder load and sustained upload headroom, then review YouTube Studio’s stream health and messages while the test is active.
- Test the failure path: confirm the host starts FFmpeg after a reboot and that the supervisor restarts it after a controlled process failure. Confirm logs make the cause visible.
- Only announce the radio after the test behaves as expected. YouTube’s encoder page advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
Copyright permission does not guarantee monetization
Copyright clearance and YouTube Partner Program monetization are separate questions. YouTube’s channel-level reused-content policy can affect monetization even when a creator has permission to use material; repeated or minimally transformed third-party recordings may create eligibility issues. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies rather than treating a music license as a monetization promise.
Or let it run in the cloud
