Set up and test the stream before relying on it; a laptop that works for an hour is not automatically dependable for 24/7 use. What you need before you start
A 24/7 channel is a continuous live broadcast, not simply a playlist left open on a laptop. The laptop runs streaming software (an encoder) that sends your audio and video to YouTube. If the laptop sleeps, overheats, loses power or internet, the broadcast may stop.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream: YouTube requires channel verification, no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days and that the streamer be at least 16. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A laptop and internet connection that pass a sustained test: Age alone does not tell you whether a laptop can encode continuously. Its processor or hardware encoder, cooling, power and software all matter.
- An encoder: Use software compatible with the laptop and a YouTube encoder stream. Compare options by compatibility, encoding load, stability and how easily you can recover after a failure; the guidance cited here does not establish a particular encoder as best for every old laptop.
- Music rights for live transmission: You need permissions that cover the music and the intended broadcast, including the relevant territories. A consumer streaming subscription or permission for a normal video does not, by itself, establish that you may broadcast a continuous live radio stream.
Clear the music rights before going live
YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility for rights on the person providing the stream. They say: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read the livestream terms and conditions and get permission that expressly covers the tracks, live transmission and territories you intend to use. The terms do not determine which permissions apply to a particular song or Indian repertoire; confirm that with the relevant rights holders or qualified local guidance.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. A placeholder may replace a stream, and unresolved matches can lead to a temporary interruption or termination. If you have licensed third-party content, a rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist to reduce interruptions. An allowlist is not a replacement for obtaining the rights. Creator Music is not a shortcut for a live music channel: YouTube says its licensed and revenue-sharing tracks may be used in long-form videos, not live streams or Shorts. Check Creator Music usage details before building a programme around those tracks.
Set up the YouTube stream and encoder
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or configure an encoder stream and review the current settings and instructions in Manage live stream settings. YouTube’s interface can change, so follow the labels shown for your account.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Do not publish it or include it in screenshots. Reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
- Choose a resolution and bitrate your laptop and connection can sustain. Higher settings use more upload capacity and may increase encoding load. Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the settings shown in the Live Control Room rather than guessing a bitrate from the laptop’s age or download speed. For a long-running stream, stability matters more than choosing the highest available setting.
- Check keyframe and other encoder settings against YouTube’s current recommendations. Do not assume that an old saved profile is still suitable. YouTube’s live-streaming tips and streaming tips are the reference points for configuration and connectivity.
- Connect the encoder, then preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and that the preview has the intended audio and video. Check that the stream is accessible as intended before leaving it unattended.
- Start the broadcast and monitor it. Keep the Live Control Room available at first so you can spot a missing feed, poor audio or a warning. Verify the stream from a separate device or account where practical.
Test whether the old laptop can stay live
Do a long enough trial under the same conditions you expect to use: same encoder settings, power supply, network and room. Watch for rising heat, fan problems, dropped frames, audio drift, software crashes and unexpected sleep or restart. YouTube cautions, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” Its guidance recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom over the stream’s bitrate. For example, if the encoder sends at bitrate B, plan for sustained available upload of at least 1.2 × B; leave additional margin if other devices share the connection.

- Measure sustained upload rather than relying on a plan’s advertised maximum or a single speed test.
- Keep the laptop on reliable power and configure its operating-system power settings so it will not sleep during the broadcast. If you use a wired Ethernet connection, confirm that the laptop and router have compatible ports; a cable can help avoid a wireless link issue but does not guarantee uptime.
- Give the laptop airflow and a stable surface. Do not block vents or assume a brief successful test proves safe, continuous operation.
- Plan how you will notice and respond to power, internet, operating-system, encoder or thermal failures. Decide who can restart the encoder and check the stream if you are away.
YouTube’s 20% figure is platform guidance, not a guarantee that the connection will never fail. The requirements for a particular household connection, laptop or backup arrangement depend on your setup.
Understand monetization separately from music permission
Having music rights does not guarantee that a channel will qualify for ads. YouTube applies monetization rules at channel level, and reused-content review is distinct from copyright. On July 15, 2025, YouTube renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” and said repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible under the existing policy. A channel built mainly around continuous music may face review depending on what it contributes and how it is produced; approval or rejection cannot be assumed from rights clearance alone.
