You can send separate outputs directly from a local encoder, or send one feed to a cloud relay that distributes it for you. The right choice depends on your computer, upload capacity, number of destinations and how much setup control you want.
What multistreaming means
YouTube calls broadcasting the same content across platforms simultaneously “simulstreaming.” For a creator, that can mean reaching viewers on YouTube and Twitch at once, or combining YouTube with other destinations. Each platform may have its own technical requirements and rules, so YouTube guidance alone does not establish what is allowed everywhere.
The practical distinction is where distribution happens: on your computer, which encodes and sends multiple outputs, or in the cloud, where a relay receives one feed and forwards it to your selected destinations.
Choose a local encoder or a cloud relay
| Consideration | Local encoder | Cloud relay |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Your computer encodes and sends an output to each destination. | You send one high-quality feed to a service, which distributes it to destinations. |
| Computer demands | More simultaneous encoding and streaming can increase processing demands; YouTube positions this approach for creators with a capable computer. | Can reduce the work your own computer must do; YouTube notes it may suit an older or less capable computer. |
| Upload demands | Outbound demands generally rise with the combined output bitrates. | Your connection sends the feed to the relay; the relay handles distribution onward. |
| Destinations | Can support multiple outputs, subject to your encoder, hardware and connection. | YouTube says this approach can suit creators planning to stream to more than two channels; actual destination limits depend on the service and plan. |
| Control and setup | Offers direct control over encoder outputs but requires configuring and monitoring them. | Can simplify distribution, but adds a service and its plan limits, setup and costs. |
These are workflow categories, not guarantees of a particular quality or performance. Compare your hardware, connection, desired output formats and each service’s current limits before choosing.

How much upload bandwidth do you need?
Plan around the total bitrate sent from your connection when using separate local outputs. YouTube’s example is a 6 Mbps target for one stream plus a 4 Mbps target for another: 10 Mbps combined. For stability, YouTube recommends aiming for 1.5–2 times the combined target, or 15–20 Mbps upload in that example. This is planning guidance, not a guarantee; other destinations, network contention and your chosen bitrates can change what you need. A relay workflow sends one feed to the service, so its upload requirement is based on that feed rather than the sum of separate destination outputs.
Use a stable connection and test the actual setup under conditions close to your event. Available upload speed can fluctuate, particularly on shared connections. Leave headroom rather than planning to use all measured capacity.

Prepare YouTube and check destination rules
- Confirm YouTube access. You need a verified channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says initial live-stream enablement can take at least 24 hours after you request it. Its live-start guidance also states that the channel must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days and that a person must be at least 16 to live stream. Check YouTube’s current eligibility and live-streaming guidance before scheduling; account requirements can change.
- Check every destination. Review each platform’s current rules on simultaneous streaming, account eligibility, ingest settings and supported formats. YouTube’s guidance does not settle another platform’s terms.
- Choose the workflow. Decide whether your computer and connection can handle separate outputs, or whether sending one feed to a relay better fits your setup.
- Prepare credentials and outputs. Follow each destination’s current instructions for authorization, stream keys and ingest server. Treat stream keys as private credentials; do not reveal them on screen or in a public chat.
- Run a complete test. Test audio, motion, overlays and every destination before the event. YouTube recommends representative audio and movement, and monitoring stream health during the broadcast.
Configure a local encoder for multiple destinations
The exact controls vary by encoder, so use its current documentation alongside the destinations’ live setup pages. The essential task is to configure an output for each destination with the correct ingest details and matching stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS—RTMP with a secure extension—and says data is encrypted through Google’s servers.
- Set up YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and obtain the stream key and ingest details shown for that event. Keep the key private.
- Add each destination output. Enter the ingest server and stream key supplied by each platform. For a local multistream, configure an output per destination using your encoder’s multistream feature or supported output method.
- Select compatible video settings. Choose a resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate supported by the destination and your encoder. YouTube’s recommended encoder values vary by resolution, frame rate, HDR and other settings; use its current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance rather than assuming one bitrate fits every stream.
- Check total capacity. Add the target bitrates for separate outputs and make sure your available upload capacity has headroom. Also check that your computer can encode and send the configured outputs reliably.
- Test and monitor. Start a private or otherwise suitable test where available, confirm each destination receives the right picture and sound, then watch stream health during the event. Fix dropped frames, audio problems or unstable ingest before going public.
Horizontal and vertical YouTube live streams
YouTube’s horizontal and vertical live experiences do not have identical discovery and feature behavior. Vertical streams may appear in the Shorts feed. YouTube’s comparison lists clickable links in chat and channel description, live ad mid-rolls and pre-rolls, and premieres as horizontal-only features. Check the current YouTube live-start guidance for the feature comparison that applies to your account and stream.

If you use a third-party encoder for YouTube’s dual-format streaming, YouTube instructs creators to use RTMP(S), select the second stream key for the vertical stream, and match each key to the corresponding horizontal or vertical content. Sending the wrong format to a key can result in the wrong viewing experience. Confirm the current interface and instructions before configuring it.
Common problems and fixes
- One destination is offline: Check that its ingest server and stream key are current and entered in the correct output. Re-authorize or replace credentials if the platform requires it.
- Buffering or dropped frames across local outputs: Compare combined output bitrate with available upload capacity, reduce target bitrates if necessary, and check for network contention. If the computer is overloaded, reduce encoding demands or consider a relay.
- Only one version of the picture appears: Verify that each output is enabled and that the local encoder or distribution service is configured for every intended destination.
- YouTube rejects the stream or shows poor health: Check the stream key, ingest settings and encoder settings against YouTube’s current guidance. Use RTMPS where supported, and test with representative audio and motion.
- Vertical and horizontal streams are mismatched: Check the stream key assigned to each format and confirm that the content sent to the key has the corresponding orientation.
- Live streaming is unavailable: Confirm that live streaming has been enabled and allow for YouTube’s stated initial activation window. Check the channel’s current eligibility and restriction status.
Copyright, reused content and platform policies
Before simulstreaming, confirm that you have the rights needed for the live content on every destination, including music, gameplay audio and other third-party material. A platform’s permission or feature availability does not guarantee that the same content complies with another platform’s policies. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance is not a complete statement of every platform’s copyright, monetization or reused-content rules; review the current rules for each service and your channel.
