A home PC running OBS can be a practical way to try it when you already have suitable equipment and stable wired internet, and you can monitor and maintain it. Neither setup guarantees uninterrupted service, and the available evidence does not establish a universal winner for cost or uptime.
What changes when you move the encoder to the cloud?
A YouTube live broadcast needs an encoder: software on a computer or standalone hardware that converts video for streaming. YouTube’s setup uses a stream URL and key to connect the encoder to the broadcast. A cloud encoder moves the continuous playout and encoding away from your home PC; the stream still depends on the cloud provider and YouTube. The video being prerecorded does not remove the need for rights to the footage and any music, a valid YouTube Live setup, or YouTube availability. The choice is about where the video is played and encoded, and which parts of the chain you must keep running.

OBS documents dropped frames when a connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. It also identifies rendering and encoding load as potential performance limits. These are local risks that a cloud workflow can remove from the home path, but a cloud service can have its own interruptions. Neither approach has a measured uptime advantage established here. When a home PC is the better starting point
Choose the local route if you already have a computer that can play the footage and encode the stream, reliable wired internet, and the time to check the stream and recover it if something stops. It can be a low-complexity trial without committing to a cloud provider. There is no precise minimum PC specification established for a simple fireplace loop; actual load depends on the media, output resolution and frame rate, and OBS scene.
Set up OBS and YouTube Live
- Prepare the stream in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the live stream, and use the encoder connection details shown there. YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key; keep the key private and do not share it or publish it.
- Add the fireplace video in OBS. Add a Media Source for the file. Enable looping if you want the same video to repeat. Check the preview and audio before going live. Make sure you have the necessary rights to both video and audio.
- Configure output conservatively. In OBS, open Settings > Output and configure streaming output. Set the bitrate to a level your connection can sustain consistently, rather than its best momentary speed. In Settings > Video, select the output resolution and frame rate your computer and upload connection can maintain. YouTube’s stream setup guidance provides encoder requirements and recommendations; check the current guidance for your selected format and resolution rather than assuming one bitrate fits every setup. - Connect OBS. In Settings > Stream, select YouTube and connect the account, or choose a custom service and enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Do not put the key in a public scene, screenshot, or chat.
- Test before a long run. Start the encoder and confirm YouTube receives the signal, the picture and sound are correct, and the stream appears as intended. Watch OBS’s connection and encoding indicators and the YouTube preview before relying on a continuous broadcast.
- Prevent avoidable local stops. Use wired Ethernet where possible. Keep the computer powered, prevent sleep, and account for operating-system updates and restarts. Arrange a way to notice if OBS or the connection stops, and a procedure to restart the encoder and reconnect to YouTube.
What to monitor
- Dropped frames: OBS attributes these to a network connection that is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Use wired networking and lower the bitrate until it is sustainable under normal conditions.
- Encoding lag or overload: If the computer cannot render or encode reliably, OBS recommends reducing output resolution or frame rate. A simple scene may be lighter than a complex one, but there is no universal hardware threshold.
- Power and internet: A UPS can help with a local power interruption, but does not fix an ISP outage, YouTube failure, or encoder crash. A UPS and wired connection address only their respective local risks.
When a cloud encoder is the better fit
Choose cloud playout when the central aim is to avoid keeping a home computer powered and a home upload connection active for the broadcast. YouTube’s encoder list names Gyre as one cloud-based option for continuous prerecorded streams; compare providers directly and verify that their current features suit your workflow. A cloud service changes the dependency rather than eliminating it: provider availability and YouTube still matter. Check these details with any provider
- Supported file formats, codecs, resolution, and frame rate.
- Whether it loops a single video, supports playlists, and how it behaves when a playlist ends.
- How it connects to YouTube Live, handles stream keys, and responds when YouTube disconnects the stream.
- Monitoring, alerts, restart or reconnect behavior, and support availability.
- Storage allowances, stream-count limits, maximum session duration, current price, and cancellation terms.
- Whether the service’s YouTube integration and features are available in your region.
These are provider-specific terms, not settled by YouTube’s listing of a cloud option. A listing establishes that the category exists, not what every service includes.
YouTube rules, rights, and archiving still matter
Encoding location does not grant rights to fireplace footage, ambient sounds, or music. Use material you own or are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s current policies for live content and copyright. Repeated or reused material may also raise separate questions under YouTube’s monetization policies; a stream being live does not itself make reused content eligible. YouTube Help states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a continuous broadcast longer than 12 hours will be preserved as one complete replay; check YouTube’s current live-stream archiving guidance and make a separate recording if preserving the full program matters.
