To use the ATEM Mini Pro with YouTube Live, connect your cameras and audio, then choose one of two routes: stream directly from the ATEM over Ethernet, or connect it by USB to a computer and use streaming software. Direct streaming keeps the encoder workflow on the ATEM; the USB route lets computer software handle the YouTube connection. Neither route is inherently more reliable, so choose based on the setup you already use.

Before you start

You need an ATEM Mini Pro, a video source connected to it, audio if your production requires it, internet access, and a YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. The ATEM can send a stream over Ethernet or present its output to a computer as a webcam over USB. These are distinct workflows: direct Ethernet uses the ATEM’s streaming controls, while USB requires computer streaming software. Blackmagic Design’s ATEM Mini Getting Started page describes both options.

Enable live streaming in YouTube ahead of time. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until event day. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Choose a connection route

Choice Who sends the stream Main setup point Best fit
Direct Ethernet The ATEM Mini Pro’s built-in streaming engine ATEM Software Control output/live-stream settings You want a direct hardware path without computer streaming software
USB webcam Streaming software on the connected computer Selecting the ATEM as the camera and setting YouTube’s encoder details in the software You want computer software to manage the YouTube encoder workflow

Blackmagic documents both routes, but the cited documentation does not establish that one is inherently more stable than the other. For either route, use a dependable upload connection and test it under conditions close to the event.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Route 1: Stream directly over Ethernet

  1. Create or select the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. Copy the stream key and, if requested by the encoder setup, the stream URL. The key pairs your encoder feed with the selected stream; treat it like a password. YouTube’s steps are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings.
  2. Connect the ATEM to the network. Plug its Ethernet port into a router or other supported internet connection.
  3. Enter the YouTube details in ATEM Software Control. In the output/live-stream settings, select YouTube, choose a server, and enter the stream key. The ATEM Mini Installation and Operation Manual (June 2024 edition) describes selecting the platform and server before starting the stream.
  4. Send a test signal. Start with bars or a standby graphic, then confirm that YouTube receives the feed and displays it in the preview. Test representative movement and audio too; static graphics alone will not reveal every problem.
  5. Publish from YouTube when ready. For a scheduled stream, wait until the Live Control Room preview appears, then click Go live. Sending a signal from the ATEM does not necessarily publish a scheduled event on its own. For an immediate encoder stream, follow that stream’s displayed status and publish controls.
  6. Monitor and end the broadcast. Watch YouTube’s stream health and your audio/video during the event. When finished, stop streaming from the ATEM and end the YouTube stream as appropriate.

Route 2: Use the ATEM as a USB webcam

  1. Connect the ATEM to the computer by USB. Blackmagic says the ATEM is recognized as a webcam; software such as Open Broadcaster and XSplit can use its output. See Blackmagic Design’s Getting Started page.
  2. Select the ATEM as the camera source. In your streaming application, choose the ATEM Mini Pro as the video input. Configure the rest of the production in that application according to its controls.
  3. Connect the software to the YouTube stream. Select YouTube in the software or enter the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain where those details are used: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  4. Match the output settings and test. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate supported by your software and available upload connection. Send a private or unlisted test where appropriate, check the YouTube preview, and test representative motion and sound before the public event.

Set YouTube encoder quality and plan upload capacity

YouTube’s current encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, with up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encryption where supported. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube lists 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Those are YouTube recommendations, not guaranteed ATEM Mini Pro presets. Check what resolution and frame rate your chosen ATEM workflow actually sends, then select compatible settings in the encoder you are using.

YouTube recommends keeping 20% spare upload bandwidth beyond the stream’s bitrate. Other people and devices sharing the venue connection can consume that headroom, so test the actual connection near the time of the event. Its streaming tips cover network preparation.

Schedule, protect the stream key, and choose latency

Scheduled streams need a publish step

For a scheduled broadcast, send the encoder signal and wait for it to appear in Live Control Room. Once the preview is ready, click Go live to publish. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Check the stream’s controls when it ends rather than assuming that stopping the encoder alone handles every YouTube status.

Keep the stream key private

Do not display the key in screenshots, tutorials, overlays, or chat. If you think it has been exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in YouTube Studio; replace the old key in ATEM Software Control or your streaming software as well.

Balance latency against playback stability

Lower latency can help when timely audience interaction matters, but YouTube warns that it can increase buffering. Choose the latency mode in YouTube’s live-stream settings based on whether quick chat response or smoother playback is more important for the event. Details are in Manage live stream settings.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • YouTube has no incoming preview: Confirm that you selected the intended stream and that the stream URL and key belong to it. Check whether the key was reset after you copied it. For Ethernet streaming, verify that the ATEM is connected and that its platform, server, and key are set in ATEM Software Control. For USB streaming, check that the software has selected the ATEM and is sending its encoder feed.
  • The preview appears, but the scheduled stream is not public: Once the preview is ready, click Go live in Live Control Room.
  • Dropped frames or unstable playback: Check the available outbound bandwidth, competing traffic on the shared connection, and YouTube’s stream-health messages. Preserve the recommended 20% upload headroom where possible.
  • Audio sounds wrong or motion breaks up: Test with the kind of sound and movement the event will contain, not just a static standby screen. Monitor the feed during the broadcast so you can catch changes.
  • Latency is too high or playback buffers: Reconsider the latency mode. Lower latency may improve interaction time but can increase buffering; choose the trade-off that fits the audience and event.
  • Live streaming is not enabled: Enable it well before the event; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours according to YouTube.

Or let it run in the cloud

The ATEM workflows above are for a switched camera-and-audio program. If what you want instead is to keep uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, and it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.

Monthly pricing: $9.99 per month. To start, try StreamNeo’s free first day.
