Cloud video storage can mean keeping stream recordings online for later—or continuously broadcasting uploaded videos. Those are different jobs. If you want to preserve Twitch VODs, enable past-broadcast storage before you stream, then download or export recordings before Twitch’s retention window expires. If you want an always-on YouTube channel that loops uploaded videos, a cloud streaming service such as StreamNeo is relevant, but it is not a general-purpose archive.
What cloud video storage means for a streamer
For an archive, cloud storage means keeping video files online so you can retrieve them later. A platform replay is not necessarily a permanent archive: availability may depend on account settings, a platform’s retention policy, and your account remaining in good standing.
A cloud broadcast service does something else: it takes uploaded videos or a playlist and repeatedly streams them to a platform. The video is being broadcast, not simply stored for private retrieval. Decide whether you need to preserve recordings, publish them for later viewing, or run a continuous channel before choosing a solution.
How long does Twitch keep VODs?
Twitch’s On-Demand Content help page, accessed in 2026, states that past broadcasts are retained for different periods by account category. These are Twitch policy windows, not universal storage limits; check Twitch’s current guidance because policies can change.

Enable VOD storage before you go live
Twitch past broadcasts are not saved unless past-broadcast storage is enabled in your stream settings. Configuration or network problems may also prevent a VOD from saving, so do not treat the replay as your only copy if a recording matters.

- Before the broadcast, open Twitch settings and locate the stream settings. Enable the option to store past broadcasts. Twitch may change interface labels or navigation; consult its current VOD instructions if the control has moved.
- Check your broadcast setup. Confirm that your streaming software or device is configured as intended and that your connection is stable. A setting enabled on Twitch cannot guarantee a recording if the broadcast fails to reach the platform correctly.
- After the stream, confirm the VOD appears in your video list. Check that playback works and that the recording is complete before relying on it.
- Move anything you want to keep beyond Twitch’s window. Download the VOD or export it to YouTube while it remains available.
How to save streams after they expire from Twitch
Once a past broadcast has passed its retention window, Twitch’s documented download or export route is no longer a dependable option for that expired VOD. Preserve it before expiry. Twitch says: “You can download your VODs to store them locally, or you can connect your Twitch account to YouTube to export and save your VODs directly to your YouTube account.”
Download a local copy
A local download gives you a file under your control and can be copied to an external hard drive or another storage location. Keep enough free space for the recordings you intend to retain; there is no universal drive capacity to recommend without knowing each recording’s resolution, bitrate, duration, and your retention plan. Verify that the downloaded file plays before deleting or losing access to the platform copy.

Export to YouTube
Connecting Twitch to YouTube and exporting can be useful when you want a hosted video accessible through your YouTube account. This still depends on platform accounts and their policies; it is not the same as possessing an independent local file. Check the export and resulting video before assuming the transfer is complete.
Choose the destination for your purpose
- Local drive: useful for an independent copy you control, with capacity and backup responsibility yours.
- YouTube export: useful for hosted access and reuse through another platform, with availability dependent on that account and platform policies.
- General cloud archive: useful for keeping files online for later retrieval. Compare capacity, recurring costs, retrieval charges, redundancy, and account-deletion rules before committing. For important recordings, keep at least one copy outside the source platform and test that copy. That is a practical safeguard, not a guarantee that any platform transfer will succeed.

Highlights and Uploads are not ordinary past broadcasts
Twitch distinguishes Highlights and Uploads from ordinary VODs. Its help page describes a combined 100-hour storage limit for Highlights and Uploads, while ordinary past broadcasts do not count toward that limit. This 100-hour figure is Twitch’s stated limit for those content categories, not a general VOD or cloud-storage allowance. Check Twitch’s current policy before planning a large library.

Practical checks before you rely on an archive
- Confirm storage is enabled before streaming. Past broadcasts are not saved by default when the setting is off.
- Know the applicable expiry date. Twitch’s retention varies by account category, and its policy can change.
- Move the recording before expiry. A VOD that has expired is not a reliable source for a later download or export.
- Check the copy. Play a local download or inspect the exported video before treating the transfer as complete.
- Respect rights and platform rules. Archiving a recording does not grant permission to reuse copyrighted music, gameplay, or other material; check the relevant rights and platform policies before publishing it elsewhere.
