How to Go Live on YouTube From Your Webcam

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To go live from your computer’s webcam, open YouTube, select Create > Go Live > Webcam, set up the stream, check your camera and microphone, then select Go Live. First make sure your channel is eligible: it must be verified, have no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the person streaming must be at least 16. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming in advance.

Before you start: check eligibility and equipment

  • Verify the channel and check restrictions. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. Review YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements before scheduling a broadcast.
  • Meet the minimum age. You must be at least 16 to live stream. For streams featuring 13–15-year-olds who are not visibly accompanied by an adult, YouTube may restrict live chat and other features.
  • Allow time for first activation. Enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. Do not wait until broadcast time to activate it.
  • Use a computer with a webcam. A built-in camera is enough for the basic webcam workflow; a separate webcam is optional if your computer has no suitable camera or you want to upgrade. YouTube’s tips recommend testing first and note that expensive equipment is not necessary.
  • Use a supported browser. YouTube’s webcam instructions list Chrome 60+ and Firefox 53+. Browser compatibility can change, so check the current webcam-streaming instructions if the exact minimum matters.

Start a webcam livestream in YouTube

  1. Sign in on your computer. Open YouTube in your browser and sign in to the channel that will host the broadcast.
  2. Open the webcam workflow. Select Create > Go Live, then choose Webcam from the left menu. YouTube describes this as going live from your computer without streaming-encoder software.
  3. Set the stream details. Enter a title and description. Choose Public, Unlisted, or Private, or schedule the stream for later. YouTube documents a default of Private for creators aged 13–17 and Public for creators aged 18 or older; you can change the setting before you start.
  4. Review the additional options. Open More options and Advanced settings to check the available choices for your stream, then select Next.
  5. Choose your devices. Confirm that the correct webcam and microphone are selected and that the preview and audio are working. If prompted by your browser, allow YouTube camera and microphone access.
  6. Start the broadcast. When the details and device preview are right, select Go Live. Keep the YouTube Live Control Room available so you can monitor and end the stream.

Choose privacy and test before the real broadcast

Use Public when you want the stream available to viewers, Unlisted when you want access through its link rather than general discovery, or Private when you want to limit access. Check the selected setting before going live; the age-based default is not a substitute for choosing the audience you intend.

For a first run, YouTube recommends trying a test live stream. An unlisted test can help you check framing, sound, lighting, and the browser’s camera and microphone permissions without presenting the broadcast as a public event. Confirm that the recording or stream contains only material you have the right to use; live broadcasts are still subject to YouTube’s copyright rules.

Share your screen while using a webcam

You can share a screen, window, or browser tab from Live Control Room while using the webcam workflow. You need a connected webcam and microphone for this feature. When sharing a supported browser tab, its audio is shared by default. Before the live broadcast, check that you selected the intended tab or window and that any private notifications or unrelated content are out of view.

When to use an encoder instead

The webcam route is the simplest choice for a direct camera broadcast. If you need gameplay capture, overlays, several cameras, or external audio equipment such as preamps, YouTube describes encoder streaming as the more appropriate workflow. It is a separate setup from the browser webcam path; see YouTube’s encoder-streaming instructions for that route.

Route Best fit What you need
Webcam A straightforward broadcast from your computer camera, with optional screen sharing. A computer, webcam, microphone, and browser access to YouTube.
Encoder Gameplay capture, overlays, multiple cameras, or more elaborate external audio/video setups. Streaming-encoder software or equipment configured for YouTube.

End the stream and find its archive

When you are finished, select End stream in Live Control Room. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and available from the channel’s Live tab. Check the archive afterward if you need to confirm that it was saved.

Troubleshooting common webcam-stream problems

The Go Live option is unavailable

Check that the channel is verified, has no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days, and has completed live-stream activation. First activation may take up to 24 hours. Also confirm that the person streaming meets the minimum age of 16.

The camera or microphone does not appear

Check that the device is connected, selected in the webcam setup, and not being blocked by browser permissions. If multiple devices are connected, choose the intended camera and microphone in YouTube before starting. For screen sharing, confirm that both a webcam and microphone are connected.

Viewers cannot see the stream

Check the stream’s privacy setting. A Private stream is access-limited; an Unlisted stream is reached through its link rather than general discovery. Change the setting before going live if it does not match your intended audience.

The stream does not look or sound right

Run a test stream and inspect the preview before the real broadcast. Reposition the webcam, check the room lighting, and verify the selected microphone and its audio level. YouTube’s basic webcam route does not require expensive equipment to get started.
