Sometimes—but the monthly price alone cannot tell you. For a 24/7 prerecorded YouTube stream, check the VPS’s monthly outbound-transfer allowance first, then whether your video can be passed through without encoding and whether the server can sustain the upload and recover from interruptions. At YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30, a continuous 30-day stream uses about 1.62 TB of video transfer before audio and protocol overhead. One example low-cost plan, DigitalOcean’s listed $4/month Droplet, includes 500 GiB, so it falls short of that estimate.
What determines whether a low-cost VPS can manage the stream?
A VPS can keep a prerecorded video streaming to YouTube, but a $5 budget does not guarantee that a particular plan can do it for a full month without extra charges or an upgrade. Four constraints matter more than the headline price:
- Outbound transfer: A stream sends data continuously. Compare the bitrate you intend to send with the provider’s monthly transfer allowance and overage rules.
- Encoding workload: Passing through a compatible, already-encoded file avoids encoding every frame on the VPS. Transcoding requires sustained CPU capacity, which depends on the codec, resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings.
- Sustained upload: A plan’s advertised specifications do not establish that it will sustain your required stream rate in practice.
- Recovery and monitoring: Your setup needs a way to detect and recover from dropped connections, and you need to monitor YouTube’s stream health.
There is no universal minimum vCPU or RAM figure established for this job. The actual source file, software, provider limits, and stream settings determine what works.
Calculate monthly transfer before choosing a plan
For a constant bitrate, the estimate is: bitrate in megabits per second × 2,592,000 seconds in 30 days ÷ 8 = bytes transferred. These are decimal-terabyte estimates for video alone; audio and protocol overhead can add traffic, and providers may account for usage in different units.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| H.264 stream setting | YouTube bitrate guidance | Estimated video transfer over 30 days |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps recommended | About 0.97 TB |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps recommended | About 1.62 TB |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended | About 1.94 TB at 6 Mbps; about 5.51 TB at 17 Mbps |
The figures are calculations from the bitrate held constant for 30 days, not YouTube-published monthly traffic totals. YouTube’s [official encoder settings](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2853702) also list guidance for AV1 and H.265; their recommended bitrates differ, so use the row for your actual codec and output settings rather than treating H.264 examples as universal.
What a published $4 VPS example shows—and does not show
DigitalOcean’s public pricing page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists a $4/month Basic Droplet with 1 vCPU, 512 MiB RAM, 10 GiB SSD, and 500 GiB transfer. That transfer allowance is less than the estimated 0.97 TB for 720p30 at 3 Mbps over 30 days, and well below the 1.62 TB estimate for 1080p30 at 5 Mbps. DigitalOcean also lists a $6/month option with 1 vCPU, 1 GiB RAM, 25 GiB SSD, and 1,000 GiB transfer; that allowance is still below the 1080p30 estimate. See [DigitalOcean’s current Droplet pricing](https://www.digitalocean.com/pricing/droplets) and confirm the live terms before purchasing.

This is one provider’s listing, not a specification for every plan near $5. Another provider may offer different transfer limits, overage charges, CPU behavior, or terms. Do not assume a plan is suitable until you compare its actual allowance with your intended bitrate and find out what happens when you exceed it.
Choose pass-through or encoding deliberately
When pass-through may work
If your prerecorded file already matches the format and stream settings you need, software may be able to copy its existing audio and video into the outgoing stream instead of re-encoding it. StreamNeo’s [guide to looping a YouTube stream](https://streamneo.com) describes this as a possible copy-mode workflow; compatibility depends on the file and software, so it is not a guarantee for every VPS or media file. Verify the output and monitor CPU use during a representative test.

When transcoding is required
If the source must be converted—for example, to change its codec, resolution, frame rate, or bitrate—the VPS has to encode continuously. The required processing capacity varies with those settings and the encoder. No universal vCPU count can establish that a VPS will handle every transcode; test your actual source and settings on the specific plan.
Configure and test the YouTube ingest
- Choose the output mode and codec. Match the encoder settings to your source and YouTube’s current [live encoder guidance](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2853702). The bitrate table includes different recommendations for H.264, AV1, and H.265.
- Set a constant bitrate and keyframes. YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Use encrypted ingest. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Configure the ingest URL and stream key in your streaming software; keep the key private and do not include it in logs or screenshots you share.
- Test the actual workload before relying on it. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Use representative audio and motion, then check YouTube’s stream health and review warnings or messages.
- Observe the VPS as well as YouTube. During the test, check whether CPU use remains sustainable if encoding, whether the connection remains stable, and whether the software reconnects after a simulated or real interruption. A short successful test does not prove a month of uninterrupted operation.
This article describes the common RTMP/RTMPS ingest path. YouTube’s [HLS ingest documentation](https://developers.google.com/youtube/v3/live/guides/hls-ingestion) describes separate segment, container, and transport requirements and notes that HLS generally has higher latency than RTMP/WebRTC-based ingest. Do not apply RTMP setup instructions to an HLS workflow.

Check costs and reliability, not just the VPS fee
- Estimate transfer from your intended bitrate for the full billing period; account for audio, overhead, the provider’s units, and any overage or cap.
- Confirm the plan’s current sustained-upload terms and resource limits. A listed price or vCPU count does not prove a workload will remain stable.
- Include the time and tooling needed to monitor the encoder, restart it, and respond to a YouTube or host interruption.
- Check the provider’s terms for your intended use. No universal host permission or uptime guarantee is established here.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a managed option for looping uploaded videos to YouTube, rather than administering a VPS. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and it describes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. StreamNeo’s own materials describe these features; they are vendor claims, not independent performance tests.
The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The international monthly listing is $9.99 per month. See [StreamNeo](https://streamneo.com) for current terms and [start the free first day](https://app.streamneo.com/register).
