There is no universal payback time for a mini PC used for 24/7 YouTube streaming. First measure its average wall power during the actual stream, calculate its electricity cost, then compare the full cost of ownership with a specific alternative. The purchase pays back only if it produces positive annual net savings or another defensible net benefit.
What “payback” means for a streaming mini PC
A mini PC does not pay for itself simply because it uses less electricity than a larger computer. Payback is the time it takes for a purchase’s upfront cost to be offset by annual net savings or incremental net contribution against a stated baseline.
Choose that baseline before doing the arithmetic: it might be a desktop you would otherwise leave running, another mini PC, a hosted service, or not running the stream at all. The comparison changes the result. If the mini PC creates no savings or net income relative to the alternative, there is no payback under that comparison.
Measure the mini PC’s real streaming power
Measure at the wall
Use a plug-in electricity usage monitor that is suitable for your outlet and expected load. Measure the complete setup that will actually run: the mini PC and any peripherals whose power is part of the decision. Let the stream reach its normal operating state and record average draw over a representative period. If power varies substantially, measure more than one typical session or operating condition and calculate a time-weighted average.

Do not use the power adapter’s rated output as the computer’s consumption. A rating or manufacturer maximum does not tell you the average wall draw during your workload. Nor does an idle reading establish what the machine will use while encoding or relaying a stream.
Match the test to the intended stream
YouTube live streams can use software running on a computer or a standalone hardware encoder. The creator configures the encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and key; YouTube does not make the listed verified encoder products itself. A mini PC is one possible computer host, not a YouTube-certified device. Check YouTube’s encoder workflow at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Record the workload details alongside the watt reading: whether the PC encodes or relays/remuxes video, the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and any other software running. Then check YouTube’s current guidance for supported settings and codecs, choose settings your upload connection can sustain, test bitrate and stream behavior, and monitor stream health: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Those settings do not prove a particular mini PC can sustain the workload; only a representative measurement can help establish its draw.
Calculate annual electricity use and cost
For continuous operation throughout a 365-day calculation year, use 8,760 hours:

Annual kWh = average watts ÷ 1,000 × 8,760
Annual electricity cost = annual kWh × your all-in electricity price per kWh
Use the price that best reflects what an additional kilowatt-hour costs on your bill, including relevant charges where possible. If you expect planned downtime, replace 8,760 with the hours you actually expect to run and use the same assumption for every option being compared.
Illustrative calculation
For context, MiniPCLab’s August 6, 2026 guide uses a 10 W example at $0.12/kWh and calculates $10.51 per year. That is an illustrative calculation, not a measured result for a mini PC encoding a YouTube stream. The formula is documented in its Mini PC Home Server Power & Electricity Cost Guide.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported a residential average of 18.31 cents/kWh for July 2026, released September 24, 2026. It describes average revenues per kWh as a proxy for retail prices; this national figure is not a substitute for your tariff. Use your own bill for a purchase decision. Build the full cost for each option
Electricity is only one part of ownership cost. Use the same time horizon and accounting rules for the mini PC and the alternative.
- Upfront purchase: include the mini PC in the configuration you need, such as storage and RAM, plus essential peripherals, a power monitor, and setup costs.
- Electricity: multiply measured annual kWh by your tariff for each device or service that consumes power at your premises.
- Recurring charges: include service, hosting, storage, or other charges attributable to the option.
- Work and reliability: account for the operator time and maintenance that differ between options when you can estimate them defensibly. Do not assign a speculative value to hardware wear or reliability.
- Useful life: choose a realistic ownership horizon. A shorter horizon spreads the purchase cost over fewer years; a longer one does not make the hardware last longer by itself.
For an option with a purchase cost and ongoing annual costs, a simple horizon total is:
Total cost over the horizon = purchase and setup costs + (annual operating costs × years) + other attributable costs
Keep one-time and recurring amounts separate in your worksheet. If an option has no upfront purchase price but does have a recurring service charge, include that charge over the same horizon rather than treating it as free.

Calculate the payback period against a named baseline
- Write down the upfront incremental cost. This is the mini PC option’s upfront cost minus the upfront cost of the alternative you would otherwise choose. If the alternative is already owned, do not count its original purchase price again as a new cost.
- Estimate annual costs for both options. Include electricity and relevant recurring costs, using measured draw for local equipment.
- Calculate annual net savings. Subtract the mini PC option’s annual costs from the alternative’s annual costs. If you are counting streaming income instead, use incremental net contribution after applicable fees and operating costs, not gross revenue.
- Divide the upfront incremental cost by annual net savings. The result is payback time in years, provided annual net savings are positive.
Payback period in years = upfront incremental cost ÷ annual net savings
If annual net savings are zero or negative, the division does not yield a meaningful payback period: the purchase does not pay back under that comparison. If costs or benefits change over time, use a year-by-year comparison rather than assuming the first year repeats indefinitely.

The worksheet is only as sound as its inputs. For example, the cost of keeping a desktop on is a valid comparison only if the mini PC would actually replace that desktop’s streaming workload rather than being an additional always-on device.

“24/7” describes the intended operating pattern, not a guarantee that one YouTube live session can remain open indefinitely. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a single session can run forever. Plan how sessions will be started again, and include any operator effort or service behavior that matters to your comparison. Check the current encoder workflow and platform guidance before relying on continuous daily operation.

Outages, reconnections, and maintenance can also affect whether the stream is actually available. A low electricity bill cannot establish uninterrupted operation. Compare the recovery and operational responsibilities of each option using information specific to the hardware or service you are considering.
Compare local hardware with a hosted service
A hosted service is another operating model to price alongside a mini PC: it can move the always-on workload away from your home computer and connection, but its recurring charges belong in the same cost comparison. Common calculation mistakes
- Using adapter wattage instead of measured draw: measure at the wall with the actual streaming workload.
- Comparing only electricity bills: include purchase, setup, service charges, and other attributable costs for both options.
- Using the wrong baseline: savings exist only if the mini PC replaces a real cost or creates a defensible incremental benefit.
- Treating gross income or eligibility as profit: monetization eligibility and estimated views do not guarantee earnings. If income is part of the case, use incremental net contribution after fees and operating costs, and label uncertainty.
- Assuming a generic processor specification proves performance: test the intended codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and encode or relay workload.
- Assuming one live session runs forever: plan around YouTube’s session and archiving constraints, including its under-12-hour automatic archive rule.
What the calculation can and cannot tell you
The arithmetic can estimate electricity expense and show whether a defined alternative produces positive annual net savings. It cannot establish a universal mini PC payback duration, guarantee that a particular model will sustain a stream, or predict YouTube revenue. No model-specific mini PC streaming power draw or controlled reliability comparison is established here; measure the configuration you intend to use and base the decision on your own tariff, purchase cost, workload, and alternative.
