The channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old. The 50-subscriber minimum applies to livestreaming through the YouTube mobile app, not generally to webcam, encoder, or console streaming. Joining the YouTube Nonprofit Program is not a prerequisite for ordinary live access.
Basic YouTube Live eligibility for nonprofits
YouTube does not publish a separate live-streaming exemption for nonprofit channels. Its general requirements apply regardless of an organization’s nonprofit status. YouTube Help states: “To live stream, you need to have no live streaming restrictions in the past 90 days and you need to verify your channel.” YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming also sets a minimum age of 16 for live streaming.
- Verify the channel. The channel must complete YouTube’s verification requirement.
- Have no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. Check the channel’s status if a prior policy action may have affected access.
- Meet the age requirement. The person livestreaming must be at least 16.
These are channel-access requirements, not requirements to qualify as a nonprofit. A nonprofit designation neither replaces them nor adds a published route around them.
Does a nonprofit need 50 subscribers to livestream?
Only if it is using the YouTube mobile app. YouTube’s mobile live-stream requirements include at least 50 subscribers and a supported phone or tablet, in addition to the general channel requirements. The first time live streaming is enabled, activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube Help: Create a mobile live stream.

| Streaming method | Subscriber threshold in the cited YouTube guidance | Other relevant requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile app | At least 50 | General eligibility, supported phone or tablet, and potentially up to 24 hours for first activation |
| Webcam, encoder, or console | No general 50-subscriber minimum stated for these methods | General eligibility; use the channel’s available YouTube Studio options |
If a nonprofit has fewer than 50 subscribers but otherwise meets the general requirements, it can consider a webcam, encoder, or console instead of the mobile app. Do not assume that a mobile restriction applies to every method; check the exact notice shown for the channel.
Small mobile channels may have additional limits
For channels with more than 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers, YouTube may limit the audience for mobile livestreams and make the archive private by default. If the channel falls below 50 subscribers, mobile live-stream access is lost. These mobile-specific limits do not change the general eligibility rules for other methods. See YouTube Help: Create a mobile live stream.

Is the YouTube Nonprofit Program required?
No. YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance does not require enrollment in the YouTube Nonprofit Program for a channel to go live. The program is a separate set of nonprofit-oriented features and support, activated through Google for Nonprofits. Its benefits include Link Anywhere cards for external campaign pages and dedicated technical support; they are not described as a waiver of YouTube’s ordinary live-streaming requirements. See YouTube for Nonprofits and Google for Nonprofits: YouTube Nonprofit Program.
Program access has its own organization and account checks. Google for Nonprofits guidance says an organization must be a registered charitable organization in a supported country and verified. Government entities, hospitals and healthcare organizations, and schools, academic institutions, and universities are generally excluded, although certain affiliated charitable arms may qualify. Google says activation requests are reviewed within 2–14 business days. These conditions concern the nonprofit program, not basic YouTube Live access. See Google for Nonprofits eligibility.

Can you add a donate button to a nonprofit livestream?
Not automatically. The ability to broadcast and eligibility for YouTube Giving are separate. For a creator channel to use YouTube Giving, it must be in a supported location, have at least 10,000 subscribers, belong to the YouTube Partner Program, and not be designated as made for kids. Availability can vary by location, so check YouTube’s current eligibility details before planning a fundraiser: YouTube Help: YouTube Giving.
The recipient organization must separately qualify. YouTube’s stated conditions include being a US-registered 501(c)(3) public charity, opting into online fundraising through GuideStar, and complying with YouTube’s monetization policies; private foundations are not currently supported. YouTube says Network for Good collects and distributes donations at Google’s request. Its FAQ says 100% of a contribution goes to the nonprofit and YouTube pays transaction fees, while explaining that Network for Good has legal control over donations once collected. Review the current terms and recipient requirements at YouTube Help: YouTube Giving FAQs.

Why can’t our nonprofit channel go live?
Use the error shown in YouTube Studio as the starting point, then check the likely cause:
- The channel is not verified: complete channel verification, then check live access again.
- A live-stream restriction is active or was applied within the last 90 days: review the channel’s restriction or policy notice. Do not try to get around it by streaming from another channel; YouTube says that can violate its circumvention rules and lead to account termination. See YouTube Help: Live streaming restrictions.
- The streamer is under 16: the general minimum age for live streaming is 16.
- Live streaming was only just enabled: the first mobile activation may take up to 24 hours.
- The mobile channel has fewer than 50 subscribers: use another eligible method, such as webcam or encoder, rather than assuming the mobile threshold applies everywhere.
- The device is unsupported: for mobile streaming, check that the phone or tablet meets YouTube’s current requirements.
When a stream includes someone under 16
For a livestream on an adult-owned account that includes a person under 16, YouTube says the adult must be visibly present. Streams featuring 13–15-year-olds who are not visibly accompanied by an adult may have live chat disabled or access to chat and other features restricted. Follow YouTube’s current child-safety guidance: YouTube Help: Live streaming with minors.

Choose a method for the broadcast you need
For a one-time event, a webcam, encoder, console, or eligible mobile device may be appropriate. The subscriber rule is method-specific: do not mistake the mobile-app threshold for a universal channel requirement. For recurring events, first confirm the channel can go live, then separately decide whether the event needs an in-platform fundraiser or nonprofit-program features.
If the goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than broadcast a live event, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. It is for uploaded videos, not a camera feed, and it does not change YouTube eligibility or restrictions; the channel must still be allowed to stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
For an eligible YouTube channel that needs a continuous loop of uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload your video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the Monthly plan is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
