Lossless compression makes a video more compact while preserving the encoded source exactly; lossy compression discards some information permanently to make smaller, easier-to-deliver files. Choose lossless when exact preservation or further processing matters. Choose lossy for distribution or streaming when reducing file size and bitrate matters more than exact reconstruction.
What the difference means in practice
Compression represents video data more efficiently. Lossless compression removes redundancy that can be recreated during decoding, so the decoded result matches the encoded source exactly. It is not the same as uncompressed video: a lossless format can reduce storage needs. The IETF describes FFV1 as a lossless format that offers storage compression, frame fixity and self-description compared with uncompressed video (RFC 9043).
Lossy compression permanently removes some source information. That can substantially reduce file size or delivery bitrate, but decoding cannot restore what was discarded. The result may look very close to the original, yet it is not an exact reconstruction.
| Question | Lossless | Lossy |
|---|---|---|
| Does decoding reproduce the encoded source exactly? | Yes. | No; some information has been discarded. |
| Main tradeoff | Retains the data, but files and encoding demands can still be substantial. | Can make delivery files smaller, at the cost of irreversible information loss. |
| Common fit | Preservation, scientific imaging, screen recording and editing intermediates intended to avoid generational loss. | Streaming and distribution where file size or bitrate is important. |
When should you use lossless video?
Lossless is the stronger choice when fidelity is a requirement rather than a preference. Typical cases include keeping a preservation master, analyzing scientific imagery, recording screen activity for detailed review, or passing footage through an editing workflow where another lossy encode would degrade it further.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
FFV1 is one documented example. RFC 9043 describes it as an intra-frame lossless video encoding format and identifies long-term audiovisual preservation, scientific imaging and screen recording among its applications. Lossless does not guarantee a tiny file or a quick encode. For example, x265 documents that its presets can generate lossless video streams; within that encoder, slower presets generally yield better compression ratios but take longer to encode (x265 lossless documentation). That is an encoder-specific tradeoff, not a universal speed or size result.
When should you use lossy video?
Lossy compression is usually the practical choice for sending or publishing video when exact reconstruction is unnecessary. A smaller file can be easier to store, upload and deliver at a constrained bitrate. The tradeoff is permanent: later editing or re-encoding cannot recover the detail already removed, and additional lossy generations can compound quality loss.

“Visually lossless” does not change that distinction. RFC 8761 uses the term for lossy compression whose lost data are not detectable to the eye after compression and decompression. It describes a perceptual outcome, not exact pixel- or bit-level reconstruction (RFC 8761).
What affects file size and bitrate?
Resolution alone does not determine bitrate. Frame rate, color depth, codec, encoding parameters, scene complexity and motion also matter. A high-motion scene can require a different bitrate from a static one at the same resolution, and different codecs or settings can produce different results.

As published examples—not universal targets or a controlled head-to-head comparison—RFC 9317 lists typical ranges of 6–8 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p, 4.5–7 Mbps for H.265 at 1080p, and 10–20 Mbps for H.265 at 2160p (RFC 9317). Treat them as context, not a guarantee of a particular quality or file size for your footage.
AV1 is described by the Alliance for Open Media as an open video codec designed for high-quality compression with greater efficiency than previous codecs. Actual results and compatibility depend on the encoder, decoder, settings and playback device (Alliance for Open Media AV1 overview).

Intraframe and interframe are a separate distinction
Intraframe compression codes frames individually; interframe compression uses relationships across adjacent frames. These terms describe how frames relate during coding, not whether compression is lossy or lossless. Do not infer fidelity from “intra” or “inter” alone: check the format and encoding configuration.
FADGI’s 2014 born-digital video archiving guidance prefers intraframe compression in its archival context and discusses concerns about interframe compression there. That recommendation is tied to its stated preservation context; it should not be treated as a universal rule for every codec or workflow (FADGI video reformatting guidance).

How to choose a compression approach
- Need an exact preservation or analysis copy? Choose a lossless format and retain the original where possible.
- Need an editing intermediate? Use lossless when avoiding another generation of lossy damage matters, while accounting for storage and encoding demands.
- Need a delivery file for upload, streaming or sharing? Use a lossy encode when smaller size or bitrate is more important than exact reconstruction; select settings based on the material and delivery constraints.
- Unsure what a codec label guarantees? Check the specific encoder mode and settings. A codec name alone may not establish that a particular encode is lossless; x265, for instance, documents a lossless mode.
Or let it run in the cloud
Compression determines how your video is represented; it does not require a computer at home to stay on while a pre-recorded video runs as a YouTube live stream. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
