MPEG-DASH delivers video as HTTP-downloadable segments and uses a manifest called an MPD to describe the available media and how to request it. A compatible player reads that description, requests segments, and chooses among the offered quality versions as playback proceeds. The player—not DASH itself—decides when to change quality.
What MPEG-DASH is
MPEG-DASH stands for Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP. It is a standard for describing and delivering media in segments, supporting both live and on-demand streaming. MPEG-DASH defines signaling and delivery structures; it does not prescribe one codec, bitrate, latency, or quality-selection algorithm. MPEG’s standard page is the place to check the current standard and edition details.
In practice, a DASH presentation is made up of media segments available from an HTTP server and a description that helps the player locate and request them. The approach is used with media formats including MPEG-4 and MPEG-2 Transport Stream, among other possible formats.
What an MPD file does
MPD means Media Presentation Description. It is the manifest for a DASH presentation: it describes the presentation and provides information a DASH client needs to request its media segments. It also signals the available media choices. The MPD is not the video itself; it is the map the player uses to find and request the media.

A useful mental model is a menu and schedule: the MPD describes the available choices and where the pieces can be found, while the player orders the pieces it is ready to play.

The service encodes representations
The same program may be encoded into several representations. These can differ in bitrate, resolution, codec, or frame rate. The collection of versions prepared by the service is often called its encoding ladder; it defines the choices a player can make. IETF operational guidance discusses how the server’s offered bitrates and client selection both affect network use.

The media is divided into segments
Instead of requiring a client to download one complete file before playback, the media is split into time-based pieces. The player can request pieces as it needs them.

The MPD describes the presentation
The MPD tells the client what is available and how to request the corresponding segments. The server provides the media and choices; the MPD describes them.

The player requests and plays segments
The DASH client requests segments over HTTP and passes them to its playback pipeline. It chooses which offered representation to request for upcoming segments according to its own adaptation logic and the conditions it observes.

The player may change representation
If the player’s assessment changes, it can request later segments from another offered representation—for example, one with a different bitrate or resolution. The server does not independently switch the player’s quality; it supplies the alternatives from which the client requests.

Why quality can change without stopping playback
Because a player requests media in pieces, it can choose a different representation for a later piece rather than restart the entire presentation. That makes adaptive changes possible during playback. It does not guarantee a seamless or invisible transition: the result depends on the media and player implementation.
Representations need to be compatible enough for the player to move between them. A change in parameters such as resolution or codec profile can require decoder reconfiguration. Segment alignment and decoder support also matter. A player may therefore handle some transitions smoothly while others cause a visible quality change or interruption. The IETF guidance describes the client’s bitrate choices and the server’s offered bitrate set as relevant factors in adaptive streaming.

What MPEG-DASH does not guarantee
- A particular quality: The service’s encoding ladder determines which representations exist, and the player can only select among those offered.
- A particular adaptation algorithm: DASH provides the signaling and delivery framework; player implementations make their own selection decisions.
- A particular codec: Codec availability depends on the presentation and the player’s support.
- A specific live latency: DASH supports live streaming, but that fact alone does not establish the latency or behavior of a particular implementation.
- Universal device compatibility: Actual playback depends on the player, device, media formats, and any deployment-specific requirements.
For a specific browser, television, player, DRM setup, encoding stack, or low-latency configuration, consult that implementation’s documentation. The standard-level description does not establish current compatibility or behavior for an individual product.
