To send video to YouTube Live, create or select a stream in YouTube Studio, copy its stream URL and key into a compatible encoder, configure the video and audio output, then start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview before selecting Go live. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion; HLS is an option for HDR or codecs RTMP does not support, if your encoder can output HLS.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel that can access live streaming and a stream set up in YouTube Studio.
  • An encoder: this can be software running on a computer, a hardware encoder, or a basic camera-and-computer setup. Choose one that supports the protocol, codec, resolution, and frame rate you plan to use.
  • A reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the encoder’s total bitrate.
  • A video and audio source routed into the encoder. Check that the encoder is receiving the right inputs before sending the feed.

YouTube’s Live Control Room detects encoder settings in the standard workflow and transcodes the incoming feed into formats for viewers. That does not guarantee that your encoder or connection can sustain a particular configuration, so rehearse with the settings and source signals you intend to use. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

Create a YouTube stream and connect your encoder

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live to open the Live Control Room. Select the Stream tab for a stream, or create a scheduled stream for an event you want to prepare in advance.
  2. Open Stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key. In your encoder, choose a YouTube preset if one is available, or paste the server URL and key into the corresponding fields. The key identifies where your encoder sends its feed; treat it like a password. YouTube explains stream settings in its live stream settings guide.
  3. Choose an ingestion protocol. For most compatible encoders, use RTMPS. In the Live Control Room, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL as described below; do not assume a displayed default RTMP URL is the secure endpoint.
  4. Set the encoder’s output resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, bitrate, and keyframe interval. Stay within both the encoder’s capabilities and YouTube’s current recommendations.
  5. Start sending from the encoder. Wait for the Live Control Room to show the stream preview and health information. Check the picture and sound before selecting Go live.
  6. When the event is over, end it in YouTube and stop sending from the encoder. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; consult the current encoder setup instructions for the workflow.

For a scheduled production, set up early and start the encoder before the event. That gives you time to catch a wrong key, missing audio, or unstable feed before viewers arrive.

Choose RTMPS or HLS

RTMPS: the usual choice

YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. Confirm that your encoder supports it, then use the RTMPS server URL revealed in the Live Control Room (the lock icon exposes the URL) along with the stream key. If an SSL error persists, verify that the encoder is actually using RTMPS and the correct server address; YouTube also suggests trying port 443. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.

HLS: for supported HDR or codec needs

YouTube documents HLS ingestion for HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support. HLS requires an encoder that can output HLS; its URL begins with HTTPS, and the stream key must be configured for HLS. For HDR, YouTube’s instructions say to leave manual resolution unchecked. Use the HLS setup guide to create the appropriate key and configure the encoder. Do not select HLS merely because it is available: your encoder must support the protocol and intended output.

Set video, audio, and keyframe options

YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR) encoding; and AAC or MP3 audio. Its table specifies a recommended 2-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed 4 seconds. Five-channel-one audio is supported only with AAC over RTMP/RTMPS. The table also covers advanced options: square pixels, progressive scan, Rec. 709 for SDR, and H.265 for HDR; AV1 is not supported for HDR. Verify the latest values in YouTube’s encoder settings table, since supported settings can change.

Selected H.264 bitrate recommendations from that YouTube table are below. These are configuration recommendations, not independent performance measurements or a guarantee that a given device or internet connection will sustain the stream.

Output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
4K/2160p at 30 fps 11 Mbps 42 Mbps
4K/2160p at 60 fps 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

Codec affects the bitrate guidance. For example, YouTube’s table lists 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended for AV1 or H.265 at 1080p/30 fps, and 10 Mbps minimum and 35 Mbps recommended at 4K/60 fps. For other combinations, consult the full table rather than interpolating. Match the output to your source and encoder instead of selecting a resolution or frame rate the source cannot provide cleanly.

For audio, confirm that the intended microphone or mixer is actually routed to the encoder and that the selected output codec is supported. A stream can appear connected while still having silent or distorted audio, so listen to the preview during rehearsal.

Check upload bandwidth and rehearse

YouTube says the stream’s total bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving about 20% headroom. Measure outbound upload capacity rather than relying on download speed, and account for other people or devices sharing the connection. This is YouTube Help’s recommendation; it is not a promise that a connection will remain stable. Its streaming tips also stress reliable connectivity because interruptions can break a stream.

Protect the stream key and handle copyright responsibly

Do not share or publish your stream key. If it is exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in YouTube; update the encoder with the new key before sending again. YouTube’s stream settings help covers managing the key.

Before streaming, make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for the video, music, game footage, and other material in the broadcast. Sending a feed successfully is separate from whether its contents comply with YouTube’s rules. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream policies for your particular material; the encoder and ingestion settings do not grant content rights.

Troubleshoot common ingestion problems

Symptom Likely checks and fixes
Encoder will not start or the key is rejected Copy the current key from Live Control Room and update the encoder. If the key may be compromised, reset it and replace the saved value. Check whether the encoder’s YouTube integration needs updating. See YouTube’s live troubleshooting guide.
RTMPS SSL error or timeout Confirm the selected endpoint is the RTMPS URL, not an RTMP URL, and that the encoder supports RTMPS. Recheck the server address and try port 443 if the SSL error continues, following the RTMPS guidance.
Video is unstable, blocky, or dropping Compare the configured bitrate with actual upload capacity, leave YouTube’s recommended headroom, and check for other network use. Confirm that resolution and frame rate are supported by the encoder and source.
Picture or audio is poor or missing Inspect the signals routed into the encoder, then run a test with representative sound and movement. Check the preview and stream health before going live.
HDR or codec requirement cannot be met over RTMP Check whether the encoder supports HLS and whether the intended format matches YouTube’s HLS setup. Configure the HLS URL and key as described in the HLS instructions.

Or let it run in the cloud

The encoder method above sends a live camera, gameplay, or other real-time production from your equipment. If what you want is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing videos you have uploaded, StreamNeo is a different workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast a live camera feed.

  • Nothing at home has to stay on for the stream to continue.
  • Every quality up to 4K 60fps is streamed as uploaded, at one flat price per slot with no quality tiers.
  • StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required; the same monthly plan is $9.99 per month.
