If you already own a low-draw laptop and have reliable home power and upload, its direct monthly cost may be only electricity. A VPS adds a recurring server bill, storage and potentially outbound-transfer charges, but avoids depending on your home computer and connection. Compare complete monthly costs, then weigh the maintenance and reliability trade-offs.
How to compare the monthly cost
Measure the laptop at the wall while it is doing the work you intend to run. Do not substitute the power adapter’s rating or the battery’s capacity: neither tells you the laptop’s actual consumption during playback or encoding.
Use this calculation, with your household’s marginal electricity price rather than a national average:
Laptop monthly electricity cost = measured watts ÷ 1,000 × hours per month × local electricity price per kWh.

For an all-in comparison, add any incremental connection or equipment costs. Include a display, capture hardware, router, or other equipment only if it would run solely for this stream; if it is already on for other reasons, decide whether to count its incremental cost. Use your actual bill’s applicable per-kWh rate, including relevant taxes or time-of-use rates.
Then price the VPS for the same stream and availability expectations:
VPS monthly cost = instance + storage and backups or snapshots + outbound transfer or overages + any required services.

Compute, disk and network usage can be billed separately. Google Cloud’s general-purpose VM pricing explains that cost depends on the configuration and that disks and network use can add charges. DigitalOcean’s Droplet pricing documentation directs customers to plan prices based on Droplet size and CPU option. Check the provider’s current included transfer allowance, accounting method, overage rate, and any separate public IP or storage charges; a base instance price alone is not the complete comparison.
The laptop is cheaper on direct cash cost when its electricity and incremental costs total less than the VPS’s full bill. No break-even amount can be stated without your laptop’s measured wall draw, electricity tariff, stream bitrate and chosen VPS configuration.
Which costs and trade-offs change the result?
What the laptop is doing
A prerecorded loop that can be sent without repeated transcoding is a different workload from a live camera feed or on-the-fly conversion. CPU-intensive transcoding can draw more power than reading a pre-encoded file and forwarding it. An old laptop’s ability to encode smoothly at a particular resolution and frame rate cannot be assumed; test the intended settings and watch for dropped frames and overheating.

Bandwidth and home connection
A constant-bitrate stream sends data continuously, so outbound transfer accumulates over the month. The VPS comparison depends on its transfer allowance and charges, while the laptop depends on reliable home upload capacity and the ISP connection. Confirm the plan’s terms and test upload stability rather than relying on the advertised download speed alone.
Power, uptime and maintenance
A laptop depends on household power, router, ISP, cooling and the condition of the hardware. A VPS moves the machine off-site, which can avoid home power and connectivity interruptions, but renting a VM does not itself keep FFmpeg healthy or guarantee that YouTube stays connected: you still need process supervision, stream-health checks and a restart plan. Which is more reliable depends on the particular home setup, provider and monitoring.

A self-managed VPS may have a low direct hosting price but requires Linux administration and troubleshooting; an old laptop needs upkeep too. If time matters to your decision, count it separately rather than treating either option as maintenance-free.

Can Linux run a YouTube stream continuously?
Yes. YouTube allows an encoder to be software on a computer or a standalone hardware encoder. For a Linux laptop, that means configuring encoder software and keeping the machine, network and streaming process running. YouTube’s official encoder setup guidance says first-time live streaming activation can take up to 24 hours. Allow for that before planning a launch.
You connect the encoder using YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or share it, and replace it in YouTube if it is exposed. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP, for encoder streams. Its encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 options, recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds). Choose a supported codec and settings that fit the source, encoder capacity and available upload; a recommendation is not a guarantee that an old laptop can sustain that workload.
For a prerecorded loop
Use a properly prepared recording or playlist and test the full loop at the intended output settings before leaving it unattended. If the workflow repeatedly transcodes video, test CPU load, temperature and frame stability; forwarding a pre-encoded file is not the same workload. Keep a way to detect a stopped encoder and restart it, because Linux alone does not guarantee that the broadcast remains healthy.

For a continuous broadcast and its archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one indefinite 24/7 session will produce a single archive covering the whole run; plan how you will manage sessions and recordings if keeping archives matters.
Copyright and channel eligibility
Use only content you own or are authorized to stream, including music and other material embedded in a recording. A working encoder does not grant rights to the video or audio, nor does it ensure that a channel or stream meets YouTube’s applicable rules. Check YouTube’s current requirements and the rights for every item in a playlist before leaving it live.
