There is no universal price winner between fiber and mobile broadband for a 24/7 YouTube stream. The right comparison starts with the encoder bitrate and its monthly data use, then checks each local plan’s sustained upload performance, data and hotspot limits, and total recurring and setup costs. A low advertised mobile price may not cover continuous streaming; fiber is not automatically cheaper either.
Start with the stream’s upload bitrate
Your encoder’s bitrate determines the stream’s baseline data use. YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates are 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection will sustain the stream. YouTube advises testing with representative content and monitoring stream health during a broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
Use the bitrate you actually intend to send when comparing plans. A lower-bitrate stream transfers less data, but the connection must still sustain the chosen bitrate reliably. Leave headroom for variation rather than treating a plan’s advertised upload speed as a safe, guaranteed streaming rate.
Estimate the monthly data requirement
For a first estimate, multiply bitrate in megabits per second by elapsed seconds, then divide by eight to convert megabits to megabytes. Convert the result to decimal gigabytes or terabytes. At 24 hours a day for 30 days, the period is 2,592,000 seconds.

For example, StreamNeo’s 2026 guide gives an arithmetic estimate of about 1.46 TB over 30 days at 4.5 Mbps. It is an illustrative vendor-published calculation, not a universal measurement or a prediction of an exact bill; actual transfer varies with bitrate, protocol overhead, and stream uptime. The formula is bitrate in Mbps ÷ 8 × elapsed seconds. Add a margin for overhead and uptime when checking an allowance.
Compare the full cost and service terms
Compare fiber and mobile plans for the same billing period and the same stream settings. Record both recurring and one-time costs, and distinguish promotional rates from the price after the promotion ends.

A mobile plan that looks cheaper at first may cost more in practice if continuous use exceeds its hotspot allowance, triggers throttling or overage charges, or cannot sustain the chosen upload rate. On the other hand, compare actual local fiber prices and fees before deciding fiber costs less.
Why mobile data needs special scrutiny
A smartphone plan is not automatically a home-broadband substitute for an always-on stream. The FCC’s 2024 report says smartphone hotspot capability may require a more expensive plan or be limited in speed or data allowance. Check the exact mobile broadband label and service terms; “unlimited” phone data does not, by itself, establish unlimited hotspot data for a continuous stream.

The FCC’s report-era U.S. figures provide context, not a current quote or a forecast for a particular address: it described typical nationwide post-paid unlimited mobile plans at $50 or more for a first line and prepaid plans at $30 or more. It also reported median mobile upload speed of 9.80 Mbps measured in April 2024. These figures do not guarantee hotspot access or adequate performance for your stream.
Use U.S. broadband labels, but check the dates
For U.S. service, broadband labels are a practical way to compare base price, introductory pricing, data, typical speeds, and relevant additional terms. Add required equipment, installation, taxes or fees where applicable, and the plan’s rules after an allowance is exceeded. Confirm current terms with the provider before choosing; report-era market figures are not live offers.

The FCC’s 2024 report cited median fixed upload speed of 19.45 Mbps measured in November 2021, compared with the mobile median measured in April 2024. Because the measurements are from different dates, they are not a same-period head-to-head comparison and do not predict performance at your address. Test the service where the encoder will run.

Choose based on the plans available at your address
- Fiber: Consider it when the local plan’s sustained upload performance, data terms, and all-in cost fit the stream. Do not assume every fiber plan has the same allowance or price.
- Mobile broadband: Consider it only after confirming hotspot eligibility, the applicable data allowance, throttling or overage terms, and sustained upload performance at the intended location.
- Either option: Compare total cost over the same period, including promotions, fees, equipment, setup, and any likely data charges. Recheck the plan terms if your bitrate or stream schedule changes.
