The quickest way to add subtitles to a YouTube video is in YouTube Studio: select the video, add a language, then upload a caption file, auto-sync a transcript, or type captions manually. If you are still editing the video on a desktop, Adobe Premiere Pro can create captions from a transcript and export them as a separate file or burn them into the picture.
Choose how you want subtitles to appear
First decide whether subtitles should be a separate caption track or permanently visible in the video image. The right choice depends on where the video will play and whether viewers should be able to turn captions on and off.
| Output | What viewers get | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Separate caption track or sidecar file | Viewers can toggle captions on or off in a player that supports the track or file. | You want viewer control, or the destination accepts a separate caption file. Confirm which formats the destination supports. |
| Burned-in subtitles | Text is part of the video image and cannot be toggled off. | The video will play somewhere that does not support caption tracks, or subtitles must always remain visible. |
Adobe documents both separate .srt sidecar files and subtitles burned into the picture. Check the destination’s requirements and preview the result in the player where people will watch it. Adobe’s subtitle overview explains the two output approaches.
Add subtitles to a video in YouTube Studio
Use YouTube Studio if the video is already on YouTube or you want to add captions as part of publishing. You can work from a timed caption file, a transcript, or the video itself. YouTube’s current help guide describes the following workflow; available file types and interface details may change, so check the options shown in Studio. YouTube Help: Add subtitles & captions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Subtitles from the left menu.
- Choose the video, select Add language, and select the language of the subtitles.
- Under Subtitles, select Add.
- Choose a method: upload a subtitle or caption file, auto-sync transcript text, or type captions manually.
- Review the text and timing, then publish or save the captions.
You can also add subtitles during upload. If YouTube generates automatic captions for the video, treat them as a draft: inspect and correct the text and timing in Studio before relying on them. YouTube explains that generated captions can be edited after processing in its creator guidance on adding captions.
Upload a timed or untimed caption file
A caption file includes the spoken text and, for timed files, timestamps that determine when each line appears. Some supported formats may also carry position and style information. Choose the timed or untimed upload option that matches your file; do not assume every file extension is accepted, because YouTube’s supported formats can change. Upload the file and save, then review captions against the video.

Auto-sync a transcript
Enter or upload the transcript text and let YouTube synchronize it to the video. The transcript must use a language supported by YouTube speech recognition and match the language being spoken. YouTube does not recommend this route for videos longer than one hour or for videos with poor audio quality. Even with clear audio, check the generated timing and wording before publishing.
Type captions manually
Play the video and enter caption text as it plays; YouTube sets the timings. Include meaningful non-speech audio that viewers need to understand, such as [applause] or [thunder]. Review the complete video with captions enabled before publishing.

Create subtitles in Adobe Premiere Pro
If the video is still in a Premiere Pro project, you can create captions from a transcript, adjust the caption track, and export captions. Adobe’s current guidance says the project can be transcribed automatically and captions created from that transcript. Interface labels and options can move between versions, so use the controls available in your installed version.
- Create a transcript for the project using Speech-to-Text, then review and correct it.
- Choose Captions > Create captions from transcript.
- In the Create Captions dialog, select the available caption preset, format, style, length, duration, gaps between captions, and one- or two-line layout as appropriate.
- Select Create captions. Premiere places the captions in a track aligned with the dialogue.
- Check the captions in the timeline, correct wording and timing, and export either a separate caption file such as .srt or subtitles burned into the image.
Adobe’s Premiere caption-creation guide describes the dialog and its settings. For the broader transcript-to-track and export workflow, see Adobe’s overview of captions in Premiere.

Review subtitles before publishing
Automatic transcription and synchronization can save typing, but the finished captions still need a full check. Watch the complete video with captions enabled and verify:
- Words, names, and punctuation against the audio.
- Timing, especially at the start and end of speech and across cuts.
- Readable line breaks and duration; captions should not flash too quickly or cover important on-screen content.
- Meaningful non-speech sounds, such as applause or thunder, where they add necessary context.
- The caption language and file format against the destination’s requirements.
- The final result in the actual destination player, including whether a separate track can be enabled or whether burned-in text remains legible.
Premiere exposes controls for caption length, duration, gaps, and line layout; YouTube’s auto-sync requires a supported transcript language matching the speech. Those checks matter whether captions were generated, uploaded, or typed.
