The right ring light depends on how you shoot: choose a compact model for close-up phone or desk video, a larger ring for a fixed streaming setup, and a different continuous light for wider scenes or outdoor work. For most creators, the key is matching useful light at your actual working distance—not picking the biggest diameter or the highest-looking number.
How to choose a ring light for your setup
Ring lights are most useful for face-led, close-up or mid-range framing, and their circular source can create a distinctive catchlight in the eyes. They are not automatically the best choice for a wide gaming-room shot, a subject farther from the camera, or outdoor filming. Those jobs may call for a more versatile continuous light instead. Start with framing and distance
Decide whether you are lighting a face at a desk, a phone held close to the light, or a larger fixed creator rig. Light output falls with distance, so a small desk light that works at phone distance may not provide the coverage or level you want farther away. Compare lux ratings only when the measurement distance and conditions match; a lux figure without that context is not a fair basis for ranking lights. Check controls, mounting and color claims
- Color adjustment: Adjustable warm-to-cool output helps you match room lighting. Check whether adjustment is continuous or limited to presets.

- Color rendering: CRI and TLCI are useful published indicators, but neither guarantees that every camera and room will produce pleasing or accurate footage. Treat vendor figures as specifications, not a substitute for judging the finished image.

- Power and portability: Confirm the exact model’s power requirements if you plan to move it or shoot away from a fixed desk. The specifications below do not establish every model’s power needs.
Diameter alone does not establish brightness. A larger ring may take more space without being the best match for your distance or framing.

Which size and format should you buy?
For phone videos and a small desk

For a fixed face-camera streaming setup
Consider a larger ring if you have room for it and want a broader source near the camera. The Elgato’s included mounting hardware is relevant when desk positioning is part of the decision. Before buying: a practical checklist
- Measure the available desk or stand space and check the light’s outer diameter and mounting method.
- Estimate the light-to-face distance from your real camera position, not just from where the light can sit on the desk.
- Check whether color temperature is adjustable or preset-only, and whether brightness can be dimmed to the level you need.
