Make a YouTube Short by recording in the YouTube mobile app or uploading a square or vertical video that is up to three minutes long. Review and edit it, choose audio you’re allowed to use, set the title, privacy and audience details, then upload. You can also create a Short from up to 60 seconds of an eligible public video you uploaded.
Choose how to make your Short
| Route | Best for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Record in the YouTube app | Filming and making basic edits on a smartphone | Whether the app’s available creative tools fit what you want to make |
| Upload a pre-recorded video | Using footage you already have or editing on a phone or computer | Square or vertical framing, a duration of up to three minutes, and audio rights |
| Edit an existing upload into a Short | Making a short excerpt from your own eligible public video | The source must be public, have no third-party copyright claim, and work as an excerpt of up to 60 seconds |
You do not need special equipment for these workflows. YouTube documents recording with a smartphone; a tripod or other gear is optional, not a requirement.
Record a Short in the YouTube mobile app
- Sign in to the YouTube app and tap Create → Short. YouTube’s Shorts camera is a smartphone workflow.
- Hold or tap Capture to start recording, then use it again to stop. Record multiple segments if you like, and adjust the duration in the camera.
- Review your clips. Add available music, filters or effects, and use undo or redo if needed. You can save a draft to finish later.
- Tap Done to preview. Add any available creative touches, such as sounds or text-to-speech.
- Tap Next. Enter a title of up to 100 characters, set privacy, and specify whether the video is made for kids.
- Check the visibility before publishing. YouTube says the default privacy setting is private for creators aged 13–17 and public for creators aged 18 or older; you can change it.
- Tap Upload Short to publish, or save it as a draft.
Labels and available tools can vary with app updates and devices. These steps reflect YouTube Help guidance reviewed October 3, 2026. YouTube’s mobile guidance lists a maximum upload resolution of 1080p.
Upload a video from your phone or computer
From a phone
You can start with a video saved on your phone rather than recording in the Shorts camera. YouTube’s Android upload guidance accepts square or vertical videos, with a maximum duration of three minutes. Trim or edit in the app, then enter the video details and upload.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
From a computer
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Upload videos.
- Choose a square or vertical video file that is up to three minutes long.
- Complete the video details, including the title, privacy and audience settings, then publish when they are correct.
YouTube’s desktop guidance also notes that creators aged 13–17 default to private and creators aged 18 or older default to public. Check the privacy setting rather than assuming the default matches your intention.
Use music and other material you have permission to use
Do not assume a song is usable just because it is popular or easy to find online. YouTube says copyrighted material in an upload must be approved for your use. Otherwise, the video may receive a Content ID claim; a valid copyright takedown can remove it and may result in a strike.

You can select eligible music through YouTube’s Shorts audio tools. The allowed duration depends on the track and workflow: YouTube says some tracks may be available for up to 90 seconds in a three-minute Short, while its Android upload instructions describe library audio limited to 15-second clips. Check the duration shown for the audio you select instead of assuming one limit applies to every track or workflow. YouTube says royalty-free music from its Audio Library will not receive a Content ID claim.
Turn an existing video into a Short
- Open the watch page for an eligible public video that you uploaded.
- Tap Remix → Edit into a Short.
- Select an excerpt of up to 60 seconds, add creative touches, and upload the Short. It links back to the source video.
This option is not available for private or unlisted videos, or videos with third-party copyright claims. If Edit into a Short is missing, YouTube says Shorts sampling may need to be enabled in YouTube Studio. Choose an excerpt that communicates a complete idea within the available 60 seconds.

Understand Shorts views in analytics
Since March 31, 2025, YouTube counts a Shorts view when a Short starts or replays, with no minimum watch-time requirement. YouTube retains the earlier metric as Engaged views; the two figures are not interchangeable. YouTube says Engaged Shorts views continue to be used for YouTube Partner Program eligibility and Shorts ad revenue sharing.
