Choose the encoder bitrate for your platform, resolution, frame rate, and codec, then make sure your connection can sustain it with headroom. A speed test measures internet upload capacity; it does not tell you what bitrate to set in your streaming software.
What upload speed do you need to livestream?
Use the destination platform’s bitrate guidance to choose a stream bitrate, then compare that figure with your sustained upload capacity. OBS’s practical starting point is to set stream bitrate at about 75% of total upload speed; this is a headroom guideline, not a platform rule or guarantee. Other devices and applications also use the connection, and an unstable route can cause problems even when a speed test looks fast. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide explains the 75% starting point.
For example, a 10 Mbps encoder bitrate implies about 13.3 Mbps of total upload capacity at that 75% starting point. This is a planning calculation, not a promised minimum: test the actual connection under representative conditions before an event.
Recommended YouTube bitrate by resolution, frame rate, and codec
The figures below are YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates, not minimum internet-plan upload speeds. YouTube’s recommendation changes with codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its encoder guidance also specifies constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the current table and requirements.

| Resolution and frame rate | AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These targets are not interchangeable across codecs. For instance, YouTube’s 1080p60 recommendation is 12 Mbps with AV1/H.265 and 17 Mbps with H.264. Use the row for the codec you actually send, rather than assuming that one number applies to every encoder.
How to check whether your upload is enough
- Choose your destination and output settings. Decide on platform, resolution, frame rate, and codec first; these determine the applicable bitrate target.
- Look up the platform’s current encoder guidance. Use the YouTube values above when streaming to YouTube. For other platforms, confirm current guidance and any eligibility conditions in the creator dashboard or official help pages.
- Compare the target with upload capacity. Run a speed test and use OBS’s 75% rule as a starting point for headroom, not as proof that the connection will stay stable. Account for other network traffic during the stream.
- Test the actual stream before going live. YouTube recommends a pre-event test with representative audio and movement, followed by monitoring stream health. A static test screen may not reflect a game with fast motion or a busy scene.
- Adjust based on the test. If the platform reports health problems or OBS shows dropped frames, lower bitrate, test another ingest server where available, and investigate connection stability before raising quality again.
YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate before an event. Its platform transcodes streams to create output formats for viewers, so the encoder settings you send are not necessarily the same as each viewer’s playback quality. YouTube’s guidance has the relevant live setup details.

How much upload speed do Twitch streams need?
Twitch’s Developer documentation describes a stream traveling over the open internet to an ingest server using RTMP and directs broadcasters to Twitch Inspector for bandwidth health testing. See Twitch’s video broadcast documentation and Twitch Inspector.
Twitch’s currently indexed 1440p/60 guidance specifies 20 Mbps upstream without added server-side transcode support and 9 Mbps when that support is available. These are conditional figures for that setup, not universal Twitch minimums; check the current creator-dashboard requirements and your feature eligibility before relying on them. Twitch’s March 29, 2017 blog post historically recommended 3–6 Mbps for most streams, with the higher end for 1080p or demanding games. That dated recommendation should not be treated as a current universal limit. The enduring practical point is to prefer a stable lower-bitrate stream over a higher-quality stream that drops frames. See Twitch’s 2017 broadcasting guidelines.

Why a fast speed test can still produce dropped frames
OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. A single speed-test result does not establish that the connection will remain stable to the platform’s ingest server for the length of a broadcast.
- Bitrate is too high for sustained capacity: reduce video bitrate and test again.
- Wi-Fi is unstable: where practical, try a wired Ethernet connection. A cable may improve the local link but cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by your ISP.
- Route or ingest-server trouble: test another server if your streaming software or platform offers that option.
- VPN or network software interference: temporarily check whether a VPN, traffic-prioritization tool, or other network software is affecting the connection.
- Local or ISP connectivity issue: follow OBS’s network troubleshooting steps, including checking modem/router connectivity and restarting it if appropriate. If the problem persists after those checks, contact your ISP rather than buying replacement hardware without evidence it is faulty.
For gaming streams, test while the game and other expected applications are running; background downloads, cloud backups, and other household users can consume headroom.

What about streaming to multiple platforms at once?
There is no supported universal upload-speed figure for multistreaming. If your setup sends separate outputs from your connection, estimate the combined demand from each output’s bitrate and retain headroom; if a relay service receives one stream and distributes it, the upload demand from your location may differ. The requirement depends on the routing method and settings for each output, so test the specific arrangement instead of applying one platform’s single-stream number.
