Use RTMP when you need to send a live feed to a streaming platform that accepts it; use HLS when you need to deliver playback to viewers over HTTP and CDN infrastructure. They are often different stages of the same workflow, not competing all-or-nothing choices. Check the destination’s ingest requirements first, then choose playback delivery for your audience, player, and latency needs.
RTMP vs. HLS at a glance
| Question | RTMP | HLS |
|---|---|---|
| Typical role | Contribution or ingest: sending a feed to a streaming service. AWS Elemental MediaLive, for example, documents RTMP push and pull inputs. | Viewer delivery: live or on-demand playback over HTTP, commonly through web servers and CDNs. MediaLive also documents HLS pull input. |
| What determines whether it works? | The receiving platform must accept the protocol and its security requirements. | The service, packaging and delivery path, and audience player or device must support the implementation. |
| Latency | No universal RTMP delay is established by the cited documentation. | Standard HLS and Low-Latency HLS behave differently; actual end-to-end delay depends on the production, delivery, and player implementation. |
| Best starting point | For sending a feed, check the platform’s current ingest documentation. | For serving viewers at scale, check support for HLS, CDN delivery, and the devices and players you need. |
These are typical roles, not protocol guarantees. AWS’s input options are specific to MediaLive and should not be treated as a compatibility rule for every provider. AWS Elemental MediaLive: supported input protocols
What each protocol does
RTMP: a way to send a feed into a service
For a broadcaster, the practical question is whether the destination accepts RTMP from the encoder or other upstream system. The service defines the supported input and connection requirements; do not assume support, secure transport options, or configuration are identical across platforms.
HLS: HTTP-based playback for viewers
Apple describes HLS as a method for delivering live and on-demand audio and video using ordinary web servers and CDNs. HLS can offer alternate bitrate streams and switch between them as available network bandwidth changes. Apple’s documentation covers Apple platforms and desktops, but it is not a complete current compatibility matrix for every browser, TV, player, or streaming service. Confirm support for the devices your audience actually uses. Apple: HTTP Live Streaming Apple: HLS documentation

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to choose for your streaming workflow
If you are connecting an encoder or software to a platform
- Open the destination’s current live-streaming or ingest documentation.
- Confirm which input protocols it accepts, whether it expects push or pull, and any required security or connection settings.
- Configure your encoder for the documented input. Treat AWS MediaLive’s RTMP push/pull and HLS pull options as an example of one service’s support, not a general platform standard.
If you are choosing how viewers watch
- Check that the platform can package and deliver HLS for your stream or video.
- Verify the target player and devices support the platform’s HLS implementation.
- For broad delivery, consider whether HTTP and CDN distribution and adaptive bitrate playback fit your audience and network conditions.
If low delay is important
Do not choose from protocol names alone or rely on a universal RTMP-versus-HLS latency figure. Ask the service and player vendors which low-latency modes they support, whether their CDN or caches are configured for them, and measure end-to-end delay in the actual workflow.
Can you use RTMP and HLS together?
Yes. A workflow can take an upstream contribution feed, process or transcode it, package it for delivery, and serve viewers through an origin, CDN, and player. The ingest protocol and viewer playback format do not have to match. AWS’s MediaLive workflow documentation describes upstream systems feeding a channel and downstream origin, packager, CDN, and player systems. AWS Elemental MediaLive: inputs

What Low-Latency HLS changes
Low-Latency HLS adds mechanisms including partial media segments, playlist delta updates, blocking playlist reloads, preload hints, and rendition reports. These require compatible behavior across production, delivery, caches, and player; enabling one setting alone does not establish an end-to-end latency result. Apple: enabling Low-Latency HLS
Apple’s current HLS authoring specification recommends a one-second target for a Low-Latency HLS part. This is server configuration guidance, not a promise of one-second viewer latency; the specification also relates the target to expected client P95 round-trip time, recommending at least three times that RTT. Common decision mistakes
- Comparing ingest with playback: First identify whether you are sending a feed or serving viewers. The protocols may occupy different stages.
- Assuming every platform supports the same inputs: Check the target service’s current protocol and security requirements.
- Expecting a protocol name to guarantee latency: Delay depends on the complete implementation, including production, CDN or cache behavior, and player.
- Assuming HLS works on every screen: Validate the specific platform, player, and device combination rather than inferring a universal compatibility list.
- Treating a part target as actual viewer delay: Apple’s one-second Low-Latency HLS part target is authoring guidance, not an end-to-end measurement.
