Choose OBS Studio if you want free, open-source software with extensive scene customization, plugins, scripting, and listed Linux support. Choose Streamlabs Desktop if you prefer guided onboarding and built-in alerts, widgets, themes, and overlays. The title’s “Streamlabs OBS” is commonly used, but the current official product material calls the app Streamlabs Desktop.
What is the difference between Streamlabs Desktop and OBS Studio?
Both applications let you assemble scenes and sources for livestreaming and recording. The practical difference is how much creator tooling is built into the application versus how much you configure yourself.
| Area | OBS Studio | Streamlabs Desktop |
|---|---|---|
| Cost and model | OBS Project describes it as free and open-source software. | Streamlabs says basic features are free; Ultra is optional and includes benefits such as multistreaming and premium overlays. The reviewed official feature page does not establish a current Ultra price. |
| Built-in creator tools | Core production features include scenes, sources, audio mixing and filters, transitions, hotkeys, Studio Mode, and Multiview. [OBS Project features] | Streamlabs lists alerts, widgets, tipping, themes, and overlays among its free features. [Streamlabs Desktop features] |
| Customization | Offers customizable docks, VST plugin support, an API, and Lua or Python scripting, in addition to its scene and source controls. [OBS Project features] | Emphasizes an integrated creator-tool workflow. The cited official materials do not establish an equivalent plugin and scripting ecosystem. |
| Multistreaming | The cited OBS feature page does not specify a built-in multistream feature. | Streamlabs marks Multistream as an Ultra feature. Its support page names Twitch, Facebook Gaming, YouTube Live, Trovo, and custom RTMP destinations; verify current destination availability and account terms. [Streamlabs Desktop features] |
| Operating systems listed | Windows, macOS, and Linux/Unix are listed on the OBS requirements page. | The reviewed Streamlabs requirements page lists Windows and macOS, not Linux. |
Neither application’s official material reviewed here supplies a controlled, head-to-head performance test or proves one is universally easier. Actual resource use depends on your encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, content, other running software, and computer hardware.
Which one should you use?
Choose OBS Studio for control and extensibility
- You want an open-source application and a configurable production workspace.
- You expect to use plugins, VST audio plugins, or Lua and Python scripts.
- You use Linux, which OBS lists among its supported platforms.
- You are comfortable building a setup around scenes, sources, and settings rather than relying on a bundled creator-tool workflow.
Choose Streamlabs Desktop for an integrated setup
- You want a guided onboarding process and built-in alerts, widgets, themes, and overlays.
- You would rather start with Streamlabs’ bundled creator tools than assemble a workflow from separate components.
- You need multistreaming and have checked that Ultra’s current terms and supported destinations suit you.
These are workflow recommendations, not claims that one app is objectively simpler or performs better on every computer.

Check compatibility before installing
The OBS Project requirements page lists Windows 10 or 11; macOS 11 or later on Intel or Apple Silicon with an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU; and Linux/Unix with OpenGL 3.3 and X Window System or Wayland. That requirements page is dated August 25, 2021, so check the current release requirements before installing. OBS cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” It notes that CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity. [OBS Studio system requirements]
The Streamlabs requirements page lists Windows 10 or macOS 12 and later, with 8 GB RAM as a minimum. Its recommendations include 16 GB or more RAM, an SSD, and specified CPU and GPU families. It also gives 3.6 Mbps or better as an upload-speed guideline for 720p at 30 fps on most platforms. These are figures stated on that page when reviewed, not a guarantee for every workload or destination; confirm the live requirements for the current version. [Streamlabs Desktop system requirements]

For either app, test the resolution, frame rate, encoder, scenes, and destination you actually intend to use. Meeting a minimum specification alone does not establish that a computer can sustain your chosen stream.
How to choose and get started
- Confirm your operating system and check the current requirements. If you use Linux, OBS is the option listed for that platform in the official materials reviewed here.
- Decide what matters more: control or built-in tools. Pick OBS for open-source extensibility and customization; pick Streamlabs Desktop for its guided setup and integrated creator features.
- Check whether you need multistreaming. Streamlabs identifies Multistream as an Ultra feature. Confirm destinations and terms before subscribing; the cited information does not establish a current Ultra price.
- Build a small test scene and test a real workload. Add only the sources you need, then try your intended resolution, frame rate, encoder, and destination. Watch for dropped frames or unstable audio before relying on the setup for an important broadcast.
- If switching from OBS, treat import as a starting point. Streamlabs’ onboarding guide documents an option to import previous OBS Studio settings. It does not promise that every setting, plugin, or integration transfers. [Streamlabs Desktop getting started guide]
What Streamlabs’ onboarding covers
Streamlabs’ July 22, 2026 guide walks new users through granting camera and microphone permissions, selecting live or recording use, signing in, optionally importing OBS Studio settings, choosing a theme, adding camera, microphone, or screen sources, adding alerts, and recording or going live. The guide documents those steps; it does not establish that all OBS settings or integrations migrate.

A camera and microphone are peripherals for creators who want to appear or speak on stream, not requirements of the software itself. Streamlabs’ guide covers selecting them as sources.

Your computer meets the minimums, but the stream struggles
A minimum requirement is not a performance guarantee. Lower the resolution or frame rate, simplify scenes, close unnecessary applications, and test again. Encoder choice and scene complexity affect CPU needs; check the app’s current requirements for your hardware and target workload.

You cannot find a Streamlabs feature without Ultra
Check the feature’s current plan eligibility. Streamlabs identifies Multistream and premium overlays as Ultra benefits; basic features are described as free. Do not rely on an old price or assume every destination is included under unchanged terms.
Your OBS setup did not fully appear after importing
The onboarding guide says OBS settings can be imported, but does not promise a complete transfer of settings, plugins, or integrations. Compare the imported scenes and sources with your original setup, then reinstall or recreate anything that did not carry over.
