Then test for overlay conflicts and mismatched GPU assignments. If the game cannot be hooked, try Window Capture or, where supported, Display Capture. The steps below focus on OBS Studio on Windows, where Game Capture is available.
1. Check the Game Capture source and target

In OBS, select the scene with the problem and check that its Game Capture source is visible and enabled in the Sources list.

Open the source’s properties. For a fullscreen game, try the fullscreen capture mode. To capture one title, choose the specific-window mode and select the game while it is running. Keep the game active during selection, then bring it to the foreground and check the preview.

If you switch between games often, OBS also offers a hotkey capture mode. Begin troubleshooting with the source’s default options unless you have a reason to change them.

OBS describes Game Capture as a Windows source for DirectX or OpenGL games. Its guidance notes that a small number of games do not work with it. OBS Game Capture Source
2. Restart OBS with administrator access if needed
Some games require OBS Studio to run as administrator to capture correctly. Close OBS, right-click its shortcut, choose Run as administrator, and test again. This is a game-dependent check, not a setting every user needs to keep enabled.
3. Rule out overlays and other hook conflicts
Game Capture hooks into the game, and other software that also overlays or records gameplay can interfere. Close likely conflicts temporarily, then reopen or retest the game.

Turn off in-game overlays and FPS counters for the test.

Close monitoring displays and other recording or game-capture applications. OBS specifically identifies MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner as prevalent conflicts.

If the problem persists, check whether your antivirus or firewall is blocking OBS. Allow OBS through the relevant security settings if appropriate; do not remove or indiscriminately disable security software.

4. Test while the game is in the foreground
A black preview does not always mean the recording is broken. Some fullscreen games stop rendering when you Alt+Tab, so OBS may show black while the game is minimized. Keep the game in the foreground and make a short test recording, then review it. If you have a second monitor, leave OBS visible there while the game stays active.

For some games, OBS recommends switching to windowed or borderless fullscreen and using Window Capture instead of Game Capture. That can also help when the game does not work with OBS’s game hook.
5. Check the game’s graphics API
OBS documents compatibility and frame problems with certain DirectX 12 games; some may also crash with OBS. If the game offers a DirectX 11 option, switch to DX11 and test again. This is a title-specific workaround, not a universal recommendation to change every game’s API.
OBS’s guide gives examples of tailored alternatives: Window Capture for Counter-Strike 2 and Destiny 2, and switching Fortnite from DX12 to DX11 if capture problems occur. These examples are not a complete compatibility list. Check the game’s current settings and OBS’s game capture troubleshooting guide for title-specific advice.
6. Match OBS and the game to the right GPU
On a laptop or multi-GPU PC, Windows may run desktop apps on an integrated GPU and games on a discrete GPU. OBS says Game Capture may fail when OBS and the game use different GPUs. On Windows 10 version 1809 or later and Windows 11, assign OBS to the high-performance GPU for Game Capture or Window Capture:

Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.

Add OBS Studio if it is not listed. Select OBS, choose Options, then select High performance and save.

Close and restart OBS, then test Game Capture again.
If it still fails, check which GPU the game uses and whether its assignment is compatible with OBS. Follow OBS’s laptop and multi-GPU guidance for the applicable Windows setup.

For older games and emulators that do not work with modern hooking, OBS suggests trying Window Capture or Display Capture. For the cross-GPU Display Capture method, use the platform requirements above and consult OBS’s laptop troubleshooting guide; if automatic selection fails, OBS says to try the Windows 10 capture method manually.

8. Keep console capture separate from PC Game Capture
A capture card is relevant when bringing external console video into OBS: connect it and add a Video Capture Device source. That is a separate workflow, not a general repair for a blank PC Game Capture source. OBS also describes capturing a console remote-play application window; that approach depends on a sufficiently fast network connection. See OBS’s capture-card guidance.
Quick troubleshooting by symptom

Black only when minimized: The fullscreen game may stop rendering after Alt+Tab. Test with the game in the foreground and review a short recording.

Black even with the game active: Re-select the running game in Game Capture properties, confirm the source is visible, and test with overlays and other capture software closed.

Only one game fails: Check the game’s API options and OBS’s title-specific advice; try Window Capture or windowed/borderless mode if recommended.

Problem occurs on a laptop: Check whether OBS and the game are assigned to compatible GPUs, then restart OBS after changing its assignment.

Only Display Capture works: Treat it as a workaround, not a Game Capture fix; it records the display and may expose other desktop content.
