To add live chat to a YouTube stream, open the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, enable Live Chat in the stream’s customization options, and save. You can also change the setting while the stream is live. Chat on YouTube and chat embedded beside a video on your own website are separate: the latter needs a chat iframe and a matching website domain.
Before you set up live chat
You need access to YouTube live streaming before you can configure chat for a live event. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the day you plan to stream. Check YouTube’s current live streaming tips for account eligibility and the latest requirements.
You can stream from a mobile device, a computer webcam, or an encoder. The route affects how you create and produce the stream, not whether chat is a paid feature: YouTube provides chat controls in its own Studio workflow. Mobile streaming has additional account and device requirements; consult YouTube’s mobile streaming instructions rather than assuming mobile eligibility is the same as webcam or encoder eligibility.
Choose a streaming route

Turn on chat for a new or scheduled stream
- Open YouTube Studio. Create or select the event in Live Control Room using the workflow for your chosen route.
- Open the event’s customization options. Find the Live Chat control and enable it. The exact labels and available options can vary by stream type and may change as YouTube updates Studio.
- Save, then preview the watch page. Confirm that the event’s chat is visible on YouTube’s watch page before sharing the link.
YouTube’s live chat moderation guide covers the setting for new streams and notes that chat can also be switched on or off after an event begins. Premieres have separate settings and restrictions, so check the relevant controls if you are setting up a Premiere rather than a live broadcast.

Change chat while a stream is live
If the event has already started, use its Live Control Room edit or live-chat controls to turn chat on or off. The control is useful if you need to pause messages temporarily or discover that chat was disabled before going live. YouTube’s moderation instructions describe the available controls; interface wording may differ as Studio changes.
Show live chat beside a video on your website
An embedded YouTube video player does not include its live chat. To show chat on your own site, embed the chat separately in an iframe. This feature is documented for desktop web, not mobile web.

- Get the video ID. Copy it from the YouTube watch-page URL for your live stream.
- Build the chat iframe URL. Use
https://www.youtube.com/live_chat?v=VIDEO_ID&embed_domain=YOUR_DOMAIN, replacingVIDEO_IDwith the stream’s video ID andYOUR_DOMAINwith the domain of the page that will host the iframe. - Embed the URL in an iframe. Make sure the
embed_domainmatches the page’s domain exactly; a mismatch prevents the embedded chat from opening. - Test on the actual site page. Check that the chat loads on desktop web and that the page layout leaves enough room for viewers to read and post messages.

Moderate messages and control who can post
YouTube supports standard and managing moderators. Assign trusted people before a busy event so they can help review chat while you focus on the stream. Moderators and the streamer can remove messages, time users out, or hide users. You can also use live commentary mode when you want only approved users to send messages. What happens to chat after the stream?
Live chat itself ends with the event. YouTube says chat replay is available on stream archives and is on by default; you can turn replay off in the video’s customization settings. Viewers may be able to comment below the archived video, but those comments are not the live chat continuing after the broadcast. See YouTube’s live stream overview and its moderation guide.
Troubleshoot missing or unavailable chat
- Chat does not appear in Live Control Room: Open the event’s customization or live-chat controls and check that Live Chat is enabled. If the stream is already live, change the setting from its live controls.
- You cannot start a stream: Confirm channel verification and check for a live-stream restriction in the past 90 days. If this is the channel’s first time streaming, activation may take up to 24 hours. Mobile streaming has additional eligibility requirements.
- Viewers cannot see chat in an embedded video: This is expected; YouTube says chat is available on watch pages, not inside embedded players. Embed the separate chat iframe or direct viewers to the YouTube watch page.
- The website chat iframe will not load: Check that the
embed_domainvalue matches the domain of the page containing the iframe. The documented embed-chat feature is not available on mobile web. - Some people cannot access the stream or chat: Check the event’s privacy setting and whether viewers have the account access required for that event. YouTube notes that unlisted or private stream access can depend on privacy and account conditions; see its live stream settings guide.
- A Premiere’s controls do not match a live stream’s: Check the Premiere-specific settings; YouTube documents separate settings and restrictions.
