To check compatibility, compare the exact video format, mapping and link configuration supported by both devices, then verify the cable or converter for that signal.
What SDI signal labels mean
SDI, or Serial Digital Interface, is a family of digital video interfaces. The prefixes in labels such as 3G-SDI and 12G-SDI help identify a signal-rate class and associated standards. They do not, by themselves, specify every resolution, frame rate, mapping mode or connection supported by a particular camera, router, converter or display.
| Label | What it indicates | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| SD-SDI | The standard-definition SDI class. AMD notes that SMPTE ST 259 is often called SD-SDI to distinguish it from later HD and 3G interfaces. AMD XAPP1248 | Check the device’s supported SD formats and the exact signal standard in its specification. |
| HD-SDI | A high-definition SDI class; equipment documentation may also describe its rate as 1.5G. AMD HDMI Transmitter product documentation | Confirm which HD formats and frame rates the particular device supports. |
| 3G-SDI | A higher-rate class associated with SMPTE 424M in manufacturer specifications. AMD HDMI Transmitter product documentation | Check the 3G mapping mode, especially Level A or Level B, at both ends. |
| 6G-SDI | A further rate class used in some UHD workflows. The label alone does not guarantee support for every UHD format. | Read the model’s format list for the resolution, frame rate and configuration you need. |
| 12G-SDI | The common name for SMPTE ST 2082-1, according to AMD. AMD XAPP1248 | Check the exact formats supported. For example, Blackmagic Design lists its Mini Converter Optical Fiber 12G as compatible with SD, HD and Ultra HD formats up to 2160p60; that specification applies to that product, not all 12G equipment. Blackmagic Design product specifications |
As AMD explains, ST 259 is often called SD-SDI “to avoid confusion” with later HD-SDI and 3G-SDI interfaces. The name is a useful shorthand, but the device’s full specification is what determines interoperability.
Why the label alone does not tell you the supported video format
Resolution and frame-rate support depend on the specific implementation, including sampling and bit depth, mapping, and whether the connection uses one, two or four links. Manufacturer specifications may list numerous standards and configurable link options, so a broad label should not be treated as a complete format list.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
In particular, two 3G-SDI devices can require different Level A or Level B mappings. Multi-link workflows introduce another compatibility check: the source and destination must support the same link arrangement and the intended format. A converter can bridge interfaces only when it supports the source signal, output direction and target format.
How to check whether two SDI devices will connect
- Find the exact format at the source. Read its specification for the SDI standard or rate class and the video format, including resolution, frame rate, and any listed sampling or bit depth.
- Check the destination’s supported-input list. Confirm that the display, router or receiving device accepts that same format, rather than relying only on a shared SDI label.
- Match mapping and link mode. Where applicable, verify 3G Level A or Level B at both ends and check whether the workflow is single-, dual- or quad-link.
- Check any converter’s direction and format support. Confirm that it converts from the source interface to the target interface and supports the particular input and output formats. Blackmagic Design, for example, lists SDI-to-HDMI converters for specified SD, HD and Ultra HD formats, while its optical-fiber 12G converter has its own published format list. Capabilities differ by model. Blackmagic Design product specifications
- Verify the cable for the signal rate and run length. Check the cable model’s rated performance for your installation. There is no universal distance figure to apply without knowing the cable and signal rate.
- Confirm the physical connection separately. An SDI label describes the signal/interface class; it does not, on its own, establish that a connector or cable is suitable.
What to know about SDI cables and connectors
For coax connections, cable suitability depends on its rated performance at the signal rate and the intended cable run. Do not choose a cable based on a generic maximum distance: use a rating for the exact cable model and installation. Connector compatibility and signal compatibility are also separate checks. A physically fitting connection does not prove that the equipment supports the format.

When an SDI converter helps
A converter is useful when the source and destination use different supported interfaces—for example, an SDI source feeding an HDMI display. Before buying, check the converter’s input and output direction and its supported formats against both devices. A converter cannot make an unsupported source format compatible simply because its connectors fit.
For fiber transport, verify the converter or module’s rate and compatibility with the rest of the chain. Product capabilities are model-specific: Blackmagic Design’s Mini Converter Optical Fiber 12G listing, for instance, specifies SD, HD and Ultra HD formats up to 2160p60. That is a manufacturer-listed capability of that converter, not a general promise about every 12G-SDI device. Blackmagic Design product specifications

Common SDI compatibility problems
- The picture does not appear despite matching labels: Compare exact input and output formats, not just the SDI class. Check resolution, frame rate and any stated sampling or bit depth.
- A 3G-SDI connection fails between devices: Check whether one device is set to Level A and the other expects Level B, then match their mapping modes.
- A multi-link signal is not recognized: Confirm that the devices support the same single-, dual- or quad-link configuration and that the connections are arranged as specified.
- A converter does not solve the mismatch: Verify its conversion direction and format support. The source signal must be an accepted input and the target format an available output.
- A long coax run is unreliable: Check the selected cable’s rated performance for the signal rate and actual run length. Do not assume a universal maximum distance.
- The connector fits but the signal still fails: Check connector and cable suitability separately from the SDI standard and format supported by the devices.
