Neither playlist sends itself to YouTube: you still need an eligible channel, a live event, and an encoder configured with YouTube’s server URL and stream key. For a recurring or continuous channel, plan to monitor the stream and handle interruptions rather than assuming the playlist guarantees uninterrupted transmission.
Choose the playlist workflow that fits

These are different control surfaces for a similar job, not interchangeable playlist formats. OBS’s VLC source is not an FFmpeg concat-script parser, and neither workflow promises seamless transitions across every combination of media files.
What YouTube needs before a playlist can go live
YouTube Live setup is separate from preparing the playlist. YouTube Help says a channel must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days; first-time live activation can take up to 24 hours. These are current help-page conditions, not permanent guarantees, so check eligibility and activation status in the channel account. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup instructions.
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. Choose the visibility you need: public, private, or unlisted.
- Copy the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into the encoder. Treat the stream key as a secret; reset it if it is exposed. YouTube’s encoder guidance is at Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Start the encoder feed. For a scheduled event, wait until the preview appears in Live Control Room, then select Go live.
- Check the watch page and channel page, listen to the audio, inspect the video, and keep monitoring after launch. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend checking the preview and stream quality.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume an indefinitely running stream will be archived as one complete video.

Build a playlist with FFmpeg’s concat demuxer
The concat demuxer reads a text script containing files and directives, then presents the files in sequence as though their packets had been muxed together. It does not automatically repair incompatible media. The script format and constraints are documented in the FFmpeg formats manual.
Check the media before assembling the list
- Make sure every file has the same streams, including codecs and time base. If they differ, the concat demuxer may not be suitable as-is.
- Check each file’s duration. The demuxer adjusts later timestamps based on duration, so inaccurate metadata can cause artifacts or gaps. A
durationdirective in the script can override a stored duration. - Use the concat demuxer for file-level sequencing when the inputs are compatible. FFmpeg’s FAQ distinguishes it from the concat filter, which is appropriate when re-encoding is needed, and from the concat protocol. See FFmpeg’s concatenation FAQ.
Write and validate the concat script
Create a text file with one directive per line. For automatic format recognition, the optional ffconcat version 1.0 header must be exactly on the first line, without extra spaces or a byte-order mark. Add a file path directive for each input in the intended order. Paths with spaces or special characters need the escaping or quoting required by FFmpeg’s script syntax.

An inpoint directive can seek into an input, but FFmpeg cautions that it works best with intra-frame codecs. With non-intra codecs, packets or decoded frames from before the inpoint may still appear.
The official documentation does not establish one universal command for indefinitely looping a concat list directly into YouTube RTMP. The exact command, options, and choice between stream copy and re-encoding depend on the files and the FFmpeg build. Validate the command on the installed version with a private or unlisted test before using it for a public channel.

Set up a playlist in OBS
OBS offers two relevant media-source choices. Its built-in Media Source accepts an individual media file and has a Loop toggle for repeating that file. For a playlist, use VLC Video, which uses VLC libraries and supports an ordered or shuffled list. OBS lists these source types for Windows, macOS, and Linux in its Media Sources guide.
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed; without it, the source may not appear.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene you intend to stream.
- Add the media files to its playlist and arrange them in the desired order.
- Leave Loop Playlist on to repeat the list; turn on Shuffle Playlist only if you want randomized order.
- Review the source’s visibility behavior. OBS allows it to pause, stop, or continue depending on whether the source is visible.
- Preview the scene and check picture and sound before connecting to YouTube.
Why OBS may not show VLC Video
The first dependency to check is VLC installation: OBS says VLC Video requires VLC to be installed to appear. If it is installed but the source remains unavailable, consult the OBS guide for the operating system and installation in use; the cited documentation does not establish one universal fix for every installation.

Check copyright and channel eligibility
A working playlist and encoder do not establish that you have permission to broadcast the material or that a channel is eligible for live streaming. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for every video and audio track, and check the channel’s current Live Control Room status before scheduling or starting. YouTube’s live-stream eligibility and account requirements are described in its live-streaming setup guidance. A stream’s visibility setting controls who can access it; it does not grant rights to the content.
Launch checklist and common problems
Before going live
- Confirm that the playlist order and loop or shuffle setting are intentional.
- Play through the media to check audio continuity and picture quality.
- Confirm the encoder is using the intended YouTube server URL and stream key.
- Wait for the Live Control Room preview and confirm that the event is reachable from its watch page.
- Keep the stream under observation after launch; a playlist alone does not guarantee uninterrupted transmission, automatic reconnection, or uninterrupted archiving.
