Calculate break-even by dividing your stream’s monthly operating costs by its creator revenue per view. If your YouTube RPM is R dollars per 1,000 views and monthly costs are C dollars, the estimate is C × 1,000 ÷ R monthly views. It is a planning target, not a guarantee: ad delivery and revenue vary, and a channel-wide RPM may not predict one stream precisely.
Build a complete monthly cost figure
Start by listing what it costs to keep this particular stream operating. Use the same currency and time period for every item, and include both recurring bills and a monthly share of less frequent expenses.
- Internet and electricity attributable to the stream.
- Streaming software, hosting, or other paid services.
- Paid labor, if someone maintains or monitors the stream.
- A monthly allocation for equipment purchase, maintenance, or replacement. For a planned replacement, divide the expected cost by the number of months over which you intend to spread it.
Add the monthly amounts to get C, your operating-cost estimate. Separate fixed costs from costs that change with operating hours or activity; this helps explain why two otherwise similar months may have different break-even targets.
Use creator RPM to estimate the view target
YouTube defines RPM as the creator’s revenue after revenue share per 1,000 views. It can include ads, YouTube Premium, memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers. CPM is different: it describes what advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions before YouTube’s revenue share, so it is not the right rate to divide into a creator’s costs for a view-based estimate. Use the channel’s own Analytics data, selecting a period and content that reasonably represent the live stream. If your monthly costs are C and your creator RPM is R per 1,000 views, estimate:
Break-even monthly views = C × 1,000 ÷ R
For instance, if costs are $300 for the month and the relevant creator RPM is $3 per 1,000 views, the arithmetic gives 100,000 views for that month. This is an illustration of the formula, not a typical RPM or an earnings forecast. Use your own figures and keep currency consistent.
A blended channel RPM is only an approximation for an individual stream: it may cover other formats, audience mixes, and revenue sources, and RPM can include views that did not generate revenue. Where YouTube Analytics provides a relevant live-stream and replay period, use that evidence rather than assuming every stream view earns the channel-wide average.

Translate the target into an hourly or audience estimate
Hourly revenue target
For a 24/7 stream, first divide monthly costs by the actual number of hours in the month. Then divide that hourly cost by estimated creator revenue per hour. A 24/7 schedule runs about 24 hours per day, but months have different lengths, so calculate against the dates in your chosen period rather than treating every month as identical.

The formula produces a monthly view target, not a concurrent-viewer target. To estimate the average viewing audience needed, you also need a defensible estimate of how long viewers watch and how YouTube counts views for the format. Without those inputs, converting views into a concurrent audience would create false precision. A stream running continuously does not guarantee continuous viewers.
Model a range instead of trusting one forecast
Ad delivery and audience revenue are uncertain. YouTube states that “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads,” and its live-ad controls provide low, medium, and high ad-break frequency choices. Use actual revenue history where possible and test plausible low, base, and high RPM assumptions rather than relying on a universal rate. Keep the period and cost basis the same across all three cases. If the stream’s schedule changes, update its operating hours and any variable costs before comparing the result.
Count additional revenue without double-counting
Live streams may earn through ads, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and channel memberships; eligible Premium viewing can also generate creator revenue. YouTube’s live monetization features and eligibility are described in its YouTube Partner Program overview and monetization features guidance.

Check monetization eligibility before treating revenue as available
Watch Page ad and Premium revenue from live streams depends on applicable eligibility and acceptance of the Watch Page Monetization Module. Access to individual features can also depend on location, channel thresholds, and other requirements. Confirm the current status and terms in YouTube Studio and YouTube’s current help pages; eligibility and controls can change.
YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in instream ad revenue per hour among creators who chose live automatic mid-roll ads compared with channels without automatic mid-rolls, across 207 countries in January 2024. That is YouTube’s stated comparison for that measurement, not proof that automatic mid-rolls caused the difference or a forecast for an individual channel. Ad slots are still not guaranteed to serve.
Keep the stream’s operating cost in the model
How the stream runs affects the cost inputs, so compare methods using the same monthly period and include the costs that actually apply to your setup. A computer-based setup may have electricity, internet, software, labor, and equipment costs; a hosted service belongs in the cost figure if you use one.
