Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For an H.264 stream at YouTube’s recommended settings, plan for about 6.25 Mbps of sustained upload for 1080p at 30 fps, or 10 Mbps for 720p at 30 or 60 fps, before extra capacity for other network traffic. The exact requirement depends on the stream’s resolution, frame rate and codec—not the size of the prerecorded file. You are still sending a live video feed while the broadcast runs.
Start with the outgoing live bitrate, not the video file size
A prerecorded video does not need to be uploaded to YouTube at its full file size while it is streaming. Instead, an encoder sends an outgoing live feed at a chosen bitrate for the duration of the broadcast. Your connection needs to sustain that bitrate continuously. A large source file can therefore stream over a connection with a lower upload rate, provided the outgoing bitrate is supported; a small file can still stutter if the live connection cannot sustain its selected bitrate.
Use YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrate for the resolution, frame rate and codec you plan to send, then add headroom. The upload targets below apply YouTube’s 20% capacity margin to the recommended bitrate: target bitrate ÷ 0.8. They are planning calculations, not separate speed guarantees from YouTube.
Upload targets by resolution, frame rate and codec
These are common rows from YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance. “Minimum” and “recommended” are encoder bitrate settings; the final column is an approximate sustained upload target with 20% headroom. Use the row matching the codec and output settings of your encoder.

YouTube’s full settings page includes additional resolutions, including 1440p and 4K. Check its current table for the exact row before configuring those outputs; do not extrapolate a bitrate from the common resolutions shown here. YouTube’s supported encoder guidance includes RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.
Why you need more capacity than the bitrate setting
YouTube recommends leaving 20% room above the total stream bitrate. For example, a 5 Mbps stream bitrate requires 5 ÷ 0.8 = 6.25 Mbps of available upload as a planning target. The recommended H.264 1080p30 setting in YouTube’s current table is 14 Mbps, so its corresponding upload target is 16.8 Mbps—not 6.25 Mbps. The 6.25 Mbps example applies to a stream set to 5 Mbps, which is the table’s H.264 1080p30 minimum.

The margin is not spare capacity if other devices are uploading at the same time. Shared connections, cloud backups, game uploads or another person’s video call can consume part of the available upload. Allow additional room for those uses; the advertised speed of an internet plan does not guarantee that amount will be continuously available to the encoder.
How to check whether your connection can carry the stream
- Choose your output settings. Identify the resolution, frame rate and codec your encoder will send, then take the matching recommended bitrate from YouTube’s table.
- Calculate a capacity target. Divide the recommended bitrate by 0.8 to leave YouTube’s suggested 20% margin. Add further capacity if the connection will be shared or other devices will upload during the broadcast.
- Measure upload speed. Run a speed test that reports upload, not just download. YouTube notes that download speed is often higher than upload speed and recommends testing outbound bandwidth. A test result is a snapshot, so do not treat it as a guarantee of sustained performance.
- Test under realistic conditions. Before the event, run a test stream using audio and movement similar to the actual content and the same encoder settings. YouTube specifically advises representative testing.
- Monitor the live stream. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages during the broadcast. If warnings appear, reduce the encoder bitrate or output quality, or resolve competing network use before continuing.
For a computer-based stream, YouTube recommends Ethernet. A wired connection can avoid some Wi-Fi variability, but it cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by your internet service. Your actual result can also vary with congestion, router and Wi-Fi conditions, and concurrent network activity. YouTube’s streaming tips cover bandwidth, testing and stream-health monitoring; its live streaming troubleshooting guidance provides further checks.

If the upload target is out of reach
Lowering the resolution, frame rate or encoder bitrate reduces the upload capacity needed. Select the matching YouTube recommendation for the new output rather than keeping the old target. If the measured upload is only briefly high enough, or fluctuates around the target, the stream may still encounter health warnings; test again with other household or office uploads stopped.
When a computer runs the encoder, it must stay on and connected for the stream to continue. For a recurring prerecorded YouTube broadcast, a cloud service is another way to avoid relying on a home computer and connection.
