YouTube Playlist Stream Cost: Raspberry Pi 4 Power Use vs Cloud Hosting

A Raspberry Pi 4’s electricity cost depends on the average power draw of the whole setup, how long it runs, and your local electricity tariff. Raspberry Pi’s recommended 15 W power supply rating is not the Pi’s typical consumption. A cloud bill is not directly comparable unless the cloud service can do the same job: playing a YouTube playlist locally, hosting playlist software, and serving media are different workloads.

First define what “YouTube playlist stream” means

The cost comparison changes with the task. A Pi playing YouTube on a connected display is a playback client; a VPS hosting playlist-control software or media is a different kind of service. A generic VPS price does not establish that it can replace a Pi playing YouTube, or that the two options need the same bandwidth and resources.

  • Local playback: the Pi plays videos from YouTube. Include the Pi, its display and peripherals in any power measurement.
  • Playlist or application hosting: the Pi runs software related to managing a playlist. Compare the software requirements and connectivity with the cloud plan.
  • Owned-media hosting: the device serves video files. Account for storage and outbound data transfer as well as compute and electricity.

The figures below help estimate electricity and provide a cloud-hosting reference; they do not establish a universal break-even point.

What a Raspberry Pi 4 power figure does—and does not—tell you

Raspberry Pi recommends a 5 V, 3 A (15 W) USB-C power supply for Pi 4. That is the supply’s recommended capacity, not a statement that the board continuously draws 15 W. Raspberry Pi’s official documentation gives approximate averages of 0.6 A at idle and 0.78 A during H.264 video playback for a particular Pi 4 setup. The documented measurements used a standard OS image from June 2019 and included HDMI, keyboard, mouse and Ethernet; connected devices can raise power use. Treat those values as setup-specific, not as a promise for every board or a measurement of your complete installation. Raspberry Pi power documentation

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

In a separate historical test, Raspberry Pi reported 2.1 W idle and 6.41 W under a synthetic load with beta firmware in 2019. Alex Bate wrote on 28 November 2019: “The last four months of firmware updates have taken over half a watt out of idle power and nearly a watt out of fully loaded power.” Those readings belong to that firmware test and its conditions; they are not current universal consumption figures. kWh = average watts × hours ÷ 1,000

Energy cost = kWh × your tariff per kWh

For a continuous month, use the hours the setup is actually on; a 30-day month has 720 hours. For example, if a complete setup averages W watts and your tariff is T per kWh, its 30-day energy cost is (W × 720 ÷ 1,000) × T. This is a formula, not a quoted local price: electricity tariffs vary by location and plan.

Measure the whole setup for the most useful estimate

  1. Connect the Pi and the peripherals required for the real workload, including its display if one is used, through a suitable wall power meter.
  2. Run the intended playlist or application under normal conditions long enough to capture representative playback and idle periods.
  3. Use the measured average watts in the formula, then apply your electricity provider’s current per-kWh tariff.

A wall measurement captures power used by the complete setup, while a board-only estimate can omit a display, networking equipment or other connected devices. Raspberry Pi’s own documentation cautions that connected devices affect consumption.

Cloud hosting reference: AWS Lightsail

AWS lists its entry public-IPv4 Linux VPS bundle at $5 USD per month, with 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, a 20 GB SSD and 1 TB of transfer. The listing is a bundled hosting plan, not a direct equivalent to a Pi playing YouTube. Price and regional allowances can change, so check the current listing and terms for the region you would use. Before comparing that bill with electricity, confirm the cloud workload fits the plan and account for any additional transfer, storage or service requirements. The listed bundle alone does not show that a VPS can perform the particular YouTube playback or playlist task you have in mind.

How to decide which option costs less

Cost or requirement Raspberry Pi 4 setup AWS Lightsail entry Linux bundle
Recurring cost identified here Electricity based on measured average watts, runtime and local tariff $5 USD/month for the listed public-IPv4 Linux bundle; verify current price and regional terms
Included hardware or resources Depends on the setup; board, power supply, storage and peripherals may need to be purchased 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD and 1 TB transfer
Workload equivalence Depends on whether it plays YouTube, hosts playlist software or serves owned media Not established by the bundle listing; verify it can perform the intended task
One-time and ancillary costs Purchase price, compatible power supply, storage, peripherals and any other setup costs Any costs beyond the listed bundle, including applicable add-ons or additional transfer, require checking against the plan terms

A sound break-even comparison needs the same defined workload on both sides, a measured or clearly sourced average Pi draw, your electricity tariff, relevant cloud resources and transfer, and the treatment of one-time hardware costs. No single break-even figure follows from the published values alone.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate option from a Pi playback client or a general-purpose VPS: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It supports any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not camera broadcasting. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
