Yes—a Raspberry Pi can act as a Linux encoder that sends a prerecorded retail loop to YouTube Live. The basic workflow is to enable live streaming on your YouTube channel, prepare a video you have rights to use, configure an encoder to repeat it and send it to YouTube over RTMPS, then check the preview and start the broadcast in Live Control Room. A Raspberry Pi project describes automated YouTube streaming with FFmpeg and systemd, but there is no verified model-specific setup or tested command for this exact workload, so treat the Pi configuration below as something to test rather than a guaranteed 24/7 appliance.
What you need before you start
- A Raspberry Pi configured to run Linux, plus its normal power, storage and network setup. No particular Pi model or storage specification is established for this workload.
- A prerecorded video file that can be read repeatedly by your encoder.
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. The channel must be verified, have had no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and the person streaming must be at least 16. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance and eligibility requirements.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the chosen video settings.
- Rights to every element in the loop, including music, product imagery, graphics and footage.
The Raspberry Pi-specific source is a community project description of an automated workflow using FFmpeg and systemd, not a performance test or a supported configuration for a particular board. See the project description.
Prepare the retail loop and clear its rights
Use a file whose full contents you own or are licensed to use. A license to play a track or image in a shop does not necessarily grant the worldwide online rights YouTube requires. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have the rights needed for worldwide exploitation on Google services; review the YouTube Terms of Service.
Before scheduling a long broadcast, check that the loop plays cleanly from beginning to end and that its audio and video are suitable for repetition. Repetition also has a separate monetization consideration: YouTube’s monetization policy expects original, authentic content and says repetitive material with minimal variation or value may be ineligible. That is a monetization risk, not a blanket statement that every prerecorded video is barred from being sent as a live stream. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Create a YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room. Create or select the stream you intend to use.
- In the stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key. YouTube supports connecting an encoder through its YouTube integration or by entering these values manually; follow the encoder setup steps.
- Store the key privately in the encoder configuration. Treat it like a password: do not publish it in a script, screenshot, repository or public chat. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
Configure the Raspberry Pi encoder
The Pi’s job is to read the prerecorded file, repeat it, encode or pass through compatible audio and video, and send the output to YouTube’s ingest server. YouTube allows software or hardware encoders, but its supported codec list and general recommendations do not prove that a particular Pi model or software build can encode every listed format. Choose settings that the actual device can sustain and test them with the intended file.
Choose ingest and stream settings
- Use RTMPS where supported. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over an SSL connection and recommends it for secure ingest.
- Match quality to reliable upload capacity. YouTube recommends choosing a quality your connection can sustain, running a speed test and monitoring stream health. Do not choose resolution or bitrate just because the file has those properties; the Pi and network must handle the outgoing stream continuously.
- Use constant bitrate where available. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee of Pi encoding performance.
- Check codec compatibility. Use an encoder and settings from YouTube’s current supported formats guidance: YouTube Live encoder settings.
- Test representative content. Check motion, text legibility, audio level and sync, and that the loop restarts as intended. Test for long enough to expose heat, storage, network or process-restart problems before relying on it for a retail broadcast.
FFmpeg can be part of a Pi workflow, and the community project above describes combining it with systemd for automation. However, the available Pi-specific source does not provide a validated command for looping a retail file, nor establish which board can sustain a given resolution, frame rate or codec. Build and test the command for your installed FFmpeg version, source format, chosen encoder and YouTube ingest settings rather than copying an assumed one-size-fits-all command.

Start the broadcast and verify it
- Start the encoder on the Pi with the file, loop behavior, server URL, stream key and settings you have tested.
- Return to Live Control Room and wait for YouTube’s incoming preview. Confirm the picture, sound and stream-health indicators before making the stream public or clicking Go live.
- Monitor the broadcast after it starts. YouTube recommends checking stream health; watch for dropped frames, unstable upload, missing audio or a frozen picture.
- To stop, stop the encoder’s output and end the broadcast in Studio as applicable. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not rely on automatic archiving for a session lasting 12 hours or longer.
Copyright, Content ID and monetization risks
YouTube states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If a match is detected, YouTube can replace the stream with a placeholder, warn the creator, interrupt the stream or terminate it if the material remains. A license alone may not prevent an interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Secure the relevant permissions and, where necessary, ask the rights owner to allowlist your channel before going live. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Even when the loop is licensed and the stream runs without interruption, repetitive content with little variation or added value may not qualify for monetization under YouTube’s policies. Separately, ads are not guaranteed: YouTube’s ad systems decide whether individual live-stream ad slots serve based on several factors. See YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures
- Live streaming is not available in Studio: verify the channel, confirm there is no live restriction in the preceding 90 days, check the age requirement, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- YouTube receives no signal: check that the encoder is running, the server URL and stream key are correct, and the Pi can reach the ingest server. If the key was exposed, reset it and update the encoder.
- Preview is unstable or drops frames: reduce the chosen output quality or bitrate to a level the connection can reliably upload, confirm constant bitrate and recommended keyframe settings, and retest while monitoring stream health.
- Video or audio is missing, corrupt or out of sync: test the source file locally, verify the encoder’s codec and audio settings against YouTube’s guidance, and test the same settings with representative motion and sound before going live.
- The stream is interrupted despite having permission: check for Content ID matches and contact the rights owner about channel allowlisting; a license does not itself ensure Content ID will recognize the permission.
- The loop plays but monetization is limited: assess whether the channel and stream meet YouTube’s originality and value expectations. A technically valid livestream does not automatically qualify for monetization.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube loop without keeping a Pi or other computer running at the shop, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops uploaded videos in the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Nothing has to stay on at home or at the shop, and the video streams as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. For a retail loop, you still need the rights to all material and must comply with YouTube’s policies. Start a free StreamNeo day.
