Use video on demand (VOD) to grow by choosing a revenue model that fits your audience and content rights, then measuring viewing, service quality, conversion and retention together. Subscriptions are one option—not a universal answer. Advertising, title- or event-based purchases, and hybrids may fit better depending on what viewers will pay for and what your rights and operations allow.
Start with the business you are trying to build
VOD growth is not just more sign-ups. A useful plan connects four questions: who will watch, how the service will earn revenue, whether the catalog can support that model, and whether viewers return after the first visit. There is no evidence-backed model that wins for every service; the right choice depends on your audience, rights, distribution access and ability to operate the model.
Define the audience and the value proposition
- Specify the viewers and use case you are serving, such as a genre-focused catalog, a game-related creator library, or on-demand access to events.
- Identify what viewers can get from your service that is not interchangeable with the rest of their viewing options.
- Separate reach goals from revenue goals. Free access may reduce a payment barrier, while a paid offer may be more appropriate for a committed niche audience; test rather than assume.
Map rights before committing to a format
For each title or event, document the permitted territories, platforms, release windows, duration, and whether the rights allow subscription access, advertising, or individual transactions. Those terms determine what you can offer and for how long. The available evidence does not establish universal rights economics, so model your own costs and restrictions before setting a price or promising a window.
Choose a monetization model that fits
Prime Video’s reporting taxonomy includes subscription products, advertising-supported video on demand (AVOD), and transactional video on demand (TVOD), while industry coverage also describes hybrid approaches. These are useful categories for planning, not proof of fixed or universal unit economics.

| Model | How viewers pay | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| SVOD | A recurring subscription provides access under the service’s terms. | Test willingness to pay, trial-to-paid conversion, retention, cancellation, catalog value over time, and whether rights costs work with recurring access. |
| AVOD | Viewers watch without a subscription or direct title purchase; advertising supports the service. | Assess audience reach, ad inventory, sales or ad-serving capability, measurement, rights, and whether viewing volume can support the operating model. |
| FAST | A free ad-supported streaming television experience, typically organized as scheduled channels. | Evaluate whether a channel format suits the catalog, whether you can program it reliably, and whether distribution and ad operations make sense. |
| TVOD | Viewers pay for an individual title or event, such as a rental or purchase, according to the offer. | Measure performance title by title or event by event; check rights windows, price sensitivity, and whether each release gives viewers a reason to transact. |
| Hybrid | Combines approaches—for example, a subscription tier with advertising or selected paid events. | Check that offers are understandable, rights permit each use, and each route has clear reporting and operational ownership. |
Decide using evidence from your audience and catalog
- Estimate payment appetite. Use audience research, conversion data, and actual purchase behavior where available to assess whether a recurring fee, ad-supported access, or one-off payment best matches the viewing occasion.
- Calculate rights and operating costs by model. Include the rights you actually hold and the work required to sell ads, manage subscriptions, or fulfill transactions. Do not assume a model is profitable because it is common elsewhere.
- Check distribution terms. A storefront, bundle, or channel platform may extend reach, but evaluate commercial terms, reporting access, and the effect on your relationship with viewers.
- Run a bounded test. Choose a defined catalog, audience, and period; set a success measure in advance; then compare outcomes with an appropriate baseline. Treat the result as evidence about that offer and audience, not a universal rule.
Measure the full viewing and business journey
Sign-ups alone do not show whether a service is becoming healthier. Track consumption and engagement alongside playback quality and device use, then connect those measures to business outcomes where your reporting permits. NPAW’s H1 2025 industry report analyzes data from more than 200 clients worldwide; that describes the report’s data base, not a census of the entire industry.
Build a practical measurement set
| Area | Useful measures | Question they help answer |
|---|---|---|
| Acquisition and conversion | Visitors or eligible viewers, starts of a trial or offer, conversion to paid access where applicable, and source of acquisition. | Which channels and offers bring viewers who take the next intended action? |
| Consumption and engagement | Viewing hours, starts, completion or drop-off, repeat viewing, and performance by title or collection. | What is watched, where do viewers stop, and what earns a return visit? |
| Playback quality | Startup experience, interruptions, playback failures, and quality patterns where your analytics expose them. | Are technical problems disrupting viewing, and for which content or conditions? |
| Devices | Viewing and quality measures segmented by device type, operating system, or app where available. | Are particular device groups experiencing a different service or content experience? |
| Revenue and retention | Revenue by model, subscription conversion and retention where available, cancellations, and title- or event-level transactions. | Which viewing and offer patterns coincide with sustainable business outcomes? |
Define each metric consistently, segment by relevant audience and device groups, and review trends over time. A relationship between a quality measure and revenue is worth investigating, but it does not by itself prove that changing that measure will cause revenue to rise.

Use reporting that matches your distribution
Amazon’s Prime Video Slate documentation describes business reporting across multiple VOD lines. Report availability depends on business line, account, licensing arrangement, and Amazon’s discretion; publishing cadence varies by report type and can be daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly. The documentation lists conversion and retention reports for some subscription businesses. Treat this as an example of the reporting a platform may offer, not as a tool every VOD publisher can access.
Before signing a distribution deal, ask what data you will receive, how often it is refreshed, whether it can be segmented by title or audience, and whether you can reconcile it with your own records. A channel that adds reach but provides little usable reporting may make it harder to understand the value it created.

Make retention and win-back part of growth
Acquisition is only one part of growth. Plan how viewers will find something to watch after their first title, how you will communicate new releases within the permissions they have granted, and how you will learn why subscribers leave. For paid offers, monitor conversion, retention and cancellation where your reporting makes those available. For ad-supported or transactional offers, examine repeat viewing and return behavior without treating subscription metrics as a substitute.
Amazon’s 2025 event release attributes churn and resubscription observations to Antenna. Those are market observations, not a forecast for your service. Use them as a reason to measure churn and win-back in your own audience, not as a basis for assuming a particular cancellation rate or recovery result.

Make a win-back offer fit the reason for leaving
- Use cancellation feedback and subsequent viewing behavior to distinguish a price concern from a catalog, timing, or service issue when the data supports that distinction.
- Consider whether a returning viewer needs a new title, a different access option, or simply a reminder that relevant content is available.
- Measure return and continued engagement after a win-back separately from the initial reactivation. A one-time return is not necessarily durable retention.
Evaluate partnerships without surrendering the whole strategy
Third-party storefronts, bundles, and channel platforms can put a service in front of audiences it may not reach alone. Amazon’s 2025 release describes third-party distribution findings attributed to Antenna; this supports evaluating partnerships, not promising that any specific partner will produce a particular acquisition result.
For each opportunity, compare incremental reach and resulting viewing or revenue with the commercial terms, rights obligations, reporting access, and customer-relationship trade-offs. Decide in advance what evidence would justify expanding, renegotiating, or ending the arrangement. Keep a direct path to your own audience where your business model and applicable terms permit.

What current industry figures can—and cannot—tell you
Recent findings show why it is worth testing multiple routes to viewers, but their scopes matter:
- Deloitte Insights reported in 2025 that 54% of surveyed SVOD subscribers had at least one ad-supported service, an increase of eight percentage points from Deloitte’s 2024 report. This is a survey finding about SVOD subscribers, not a share of all viewers or all subscriptions.
- Comscore reported in 2025 that viewing hours across major free ad-supported streaming services grew 43% year over year. The figure describes Comscore’s stated measurement scope, not all VOD viewing.
- An Accedo study summary in 2025 said 27% of respondents used predictive analytics to forecast behavior or trends. The summary alone does not establish that the finding represents the whole industry.
These figures can inform questions to test—such as whether an ad-supported option has a place in your offer—but do not prove which model will work for your catalog, geography, or margins.
A 90-day plan for turning analysis into action
Days 1–30: establish the baseline
- Inventory titles and rights by territory, window, and permitted monetization model.
- Write down the primary audience, the value proposition, and the business outcome you want to improve.
- Audit the analytics available from your own service and distribution partners. Record gaps in title, device, conversion, retention, and quality reporting.
- Choose consistent metric definitions and capture a baseline before changing the offer.
Days 31–60: test one focused offer
- Select a catalog segment or release for which rights and audience are clear.
- Test a monetization or distribution change with a defined audience and timeframe. Avoid changing multiple important variables at once if you need to understand what affected the result.
- Monitor consumption, playback quality, and the business measure relevant to that test—not just visits or sign-ups.
Days 61–90: decide what to keep
- Compare results with the baseline and the test’s stated success measure.
- Check for differences by title, audience segment, device, and acquisition route where the data is reliable.
- Keep, revise, or stop the offer based on its rights fit, operational demands, and observed business outcome. Record uncertainty where sample size or reporting limits make a firm conclusion premature.
Keep rights and platform rules in the operating plan
A content strategy only works if the service has permission to make each title available in the way and places it promises. Confirm rights for the relevant VOD format and territory, keep records of license terms and expiration dates, and have a process for removing or restricting content when permissions change. If you also promote content through live streams, verify the applicable platform rules and rights for that use separately; permission to offer a VOD title does not automatically establish permission for every other distribution format.
Or let it run in the cloud
If a 24/7 YouTube stream is part of your distribution plan—for example, a continuous channel built from uploaded videos—StreamNeo keeps it running from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
