To log YouTube RTMP interruptions in FFmpeg, retain FFmpeg’s diagnostics and separately record every FFmpeg process start and exit through a supervisor. FFmpeg’s -report option writes a report with the command line and log output; redirecting standard error to a managed file provides another diagnostic record. Timestamped supervisor records help distinguish an interruption within one FFmpeg process from a full process restart.
Logging does not make a dropped publishing connection reconnect. In particular, FFmpeg’s documented -reconnect options are for HTTP, not a generic outgoing RTMP retry switch. The setup below helps you establish what happened; validate any recovery behavior with your installed FFmpeg build and a controlled test.
What to log—and what the logs can tell you
Use two records together: FFmpeg’s own output for I/O and publishing diagnostics, and supervisor events for process lifecycle. A reconnect or connection error while the same process remains running is different from FFmpeg exiting and being launched again. Without timestamps and process-start records, those cases can be difficult to distinguish after the fact.
- FFmpeg diagnostics: log level, errors, and report output from the process.
- Supervisor events: UTC launch and exit times, exit status or signal, restart count, and relevant service-manager messages.
- YouTube status: stream health and messages in Live Control Room, correlated with the same time window.
These records provide evidence for troubleshooting. FFmpeg logging by itself neither retries a connection nor alerts an operator.

Configure FFmpeg diagnostics
FFmpeg’s -report option writes a report containing the command line and log output. You can also redirect standard error to a managed log file. This shell pattern is illustrative; replace the placeholders with your actual input and output options, and adapt the path, permissions, and retention policy to the host:
ffmpeg -hide_banner -loglevel level+info -report
-i INPUT_OPTIONS_AND_SOURCE
OUTPUT_OPTIONS_AND_YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL
2>>/var/log/ffmpeg-youtube.log
- Check the installed build. Record the exact FFmpeg version and build alongside the service configuration. Confirm that it accepts the selected logging options and consult documentation matching that build; options and defaults can change.
- Choose a useful log level. Keep enough information to investigate I/O failures. Increase verbosity temporarily during controlled troubleshooting rather than leaving noisy debug output running until it fills the disk.
- Protect and rotate the logs. Configure retention and rotation, and restrict access. A report can include the full command line; source URLs, tokens, or stream credentials in that command may therefore be exposed in the report. Avoid copying keys into shared logs.
Record process starts, exits, and restarts
Run FFmpeg under a service manager or supervisor that records each launch, exit status, and UTC timestamp. Retain the supervisor’s own messages as well as FFmpeg’s output. At minimum, capture the UTC start and stop times, exit code or terminating signal, and restart count. A supervisor can identify that a process ended and restarted; it cannot, by itself, prove that the YouTube viewer session or event continued without interruption.

Set monitoring or alerts for missing output or progress, repeated restarts, disk exhaustion, and a loss of YouTube stream health. FFmpeg’s log file does not send alerts automatically.
Understand the HTTP reconnect options
FFmpeg documents options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, and reconnect_streamed in its HTTP protocol documentation. The option description “Reconnect automatically when disconnected before EOF is hit” applies to that HTTP protocol option; it does not establish automatic recovery for an outgoing RTMP publishing connection to YouTube.

Do not treat an HTTP input option as a universal RTMP output retry setting. Recovery may depend on the installed FFmpeg build, output and muxer configuration, operating system, network, and YouTube ingest behavior. The official pages cited here do not establish what happens to the YouTube event or viewer session after repeated RTMP publisher disconnects.
Check YouTube’s ingest settings and network
- Copy the current ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder. If a key is reset or startup fails, obtain the current key and update the encoder. Treat the key as a secret.
- Prefer RTMPS where supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS and describes it as encrypted to and through Google’s servers. Follow YouTube’s published encoder guidance for codecs and bitrate settings; standard ingest guidance includes RTMP/RTMPS, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Leave network headroom. The total stream bitrate must fit within available outbound bandwidth. YouTube recommends 20% room, and shared networks can reduce available capacity. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Watch the event while it runs. YouTube advises monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event. A clean local FFmpeg log does not replace checking the platform’s ingest status.
Test recovery without risking a public stream
Use a controlled, unlisted stream to learn how your specific combination of FFmpeg, supervisor, network, and YouTube ingest behaves. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; for backup-encoder planning, it advises testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and verifying rollover.

- Start the test stream and note the UTC time, FFmpeg process, and Live Control Room health.
- Interrupt the encoder’s network path in a controlled way. Observe FFmpeg’s output and whether the process remains running or exits.
- Check the supervisor record for the launch, exit status or signal, and any subsequent restart.
- Review Live Control Room health and messages, then verify whether the same event remains available. Do not assume that reconnecting preserves the viewer session or event identity.
- Restore the network and document the behavior for the exact build and configuration you tested. Do not treat one successful test as a guarantee of unattended recovery.
Troubleshoot common logging and reconnect problems
| Symptom | What to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| No report or expected log output | Whether the installed FFmpeg build accepts the options, whether the command was launched as expected, and whether the service account can write to the log path. | Check the service-manager launch record and permissions; confirm the build and logging options, then restart a controlled test. |
| FFmpeg keeps running but YouTube ingest is unhealthy | The FFmpeg diagnostics, Live Control Room messages, current server URL and stream key, and outbound bandwidth. | Copy the current ingest details from Live Control Room, check the network headroom, and test the actual output behavior. Do not assume HTTP reconnect options repair RTMP publishing. |
| FFmpeg exits after a connection problem | The final FFmpeg log lines and supervisor exit status or signal. | Use the supervisor record to establish whether a restart occurred; review the launch configuration and controlled-test results before relying on restart behavior. |
| Repeated restarts or growing logs | Restart count, log size, rotation and retention, and whether failure begins at the same point. | Alert on repeated restarts, configure rotation and retention, and investigate the underlying connection or configuration failure instead of hiding it with excessive verbosity. |
| The report exposes sensitive details | Whether the recorded command line contains a stream key, token, or private source URL, and who can read retained logs. | Restrict log access, avoid copying secrets into shared records, and handle any exposed credential as compromised. |
