The phrase alone does not prove that another encoder is live: it may be a stale or incorrect key, a second publishing workflow, or an error specific to a third-party service. Stop any other publisher that could be sending to the same stream, then get the current key from YouTube Studio and update the encoder you intend to use.
1. Identify where the error appears
Note whether the message is in YouTube Studio, OBS or another local encoder, or a cloud production service. Similar wording in different products does not establish that they share the same cause. YouTube’s help pages explain stream keys and general encoder troubleshooting, but do not define “already in use” as an official diagnosis.
- YouTube Studio or a local encoder: verify the key in Live Control Room, update the intended encoder, and check for another publisher.
- A cloud production or API service: check that service’s event and output state as well as the YouTube key. The service may be reporting its own configuration conflict.
2. Stop other publishers before retrying
Stop any other encoder, cloud workflow, or scheduled output that could be publishing to the same YouTube stream. Then restart only the encoder that should go live. Third-party troubleshooting guidance describes a competing publisher as one possible explanation, but YouTube’s official help does not establish that as the universal meaning of this exact message.
3. Refresh the stream key in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go Live → Stream.
- Copy the current stream key and replace the key stored in the intended encoder or service.
- If the current key does not work, select Reset beside it, then replace the old value everywhere it is stored with the newly generated key.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before starting the stream.
YouTube describes stream keys as credentials that tell an encoder where to send its feed and allow YouTube to accept it. A channel owner or manager must reset a key; editors and viewers cannot. YouTube’s documented general advice for an encoder-start error is to get a key in Live Control Room and update the encoder: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream. YouTube supports creating a custom stream key for reuse. Its “Reuse settings” option also copies the previous stream’s metadata and settings. That makes reuse a supported setup, but does not establish that reusing a key caused this error.
4. Check third-party output or event settings
If a production service manages YouTube API outputs or scheduled events, inspect its output binding and event state, and follow that provider’s instructions. For example, Sardius documents a binding error when its output attempts to reuse a key YouTube has closed out; its guidance includes a possible conflict when the same key is used for nearby events and recommends separate outputs for secondary or one-off streams. That is specific to Sardius’s documented workflow, not a general YouTube rule. See Sardius’s output-key guidance.

5. If the error remains
- Capture the full message and note the exact product displaying it.
- Confirm you replaced the key in the encoder or service that is actually publishing—not just in YouTube Studio.
- Check again for another active encoder, cloud workflow, or scheduled output.
- If the message comes from a third-party tool, contact that tool’s support with the message and its event/output details. YouTube says users of third-party software that logs into YouTube without a stream key should contact the software provider’s support.
YouTube’s live-streaming tips do not suggest that buying hardware is a remedy. The fixes supported here concern credentials, encoders, and service configuration.
