Not necessarily. Pre-encoding can shift processing work away from the live broadcast, but it does not eliminate the need to play and send a continuous signal to YouTube. The total cost depends on what you replace: computer power and electricity, hosted streaming time, storage, viewer delivery, or a subscription. No published figure establishes a general savings percentage for pre-encoding prerecorded videos for a 24/7 YouTube stream.
What pre-encoding changes—and what it does not
Pre-encoding means preparing prerecorded source files before they are broadcast, rather than encoding those source files in real time as they play. This can reduce the processing work required of a local computer during the stream. It does not, by itself, provide the ongoing playback and upload needed to keep a live broadcast running.
YouTube also performs work after it receives the live input: it says it “will automatically transcode your live stream to create many different output formats so that all of your viewers across many devices and networks can watch.” Preparing the source files in advance does not remove that YouTube-side transcoding. YouTube’s live encoder guidance describes its recommendations and process.
Which costs might change?
The word “encoding cost” can refer to different parts of a 24/7 streaming setup. Identify the bill or resource you expect pre-encoding to reduce before comparing workflows.

| Cost area | What advance encoding may change | What to include in the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Local computer and electricity | It may reduce real-time processing demand on the computer. | The computer may still need to play the files and upload continuously. The sources provide no measured electricity or hardware savings for a particular PC. |
| Hosted channel or active-stream time | It may not change a charge based on how long a channel is active. | Check whether the provider bills for active channel time, configured outputs, storage, delivery, bandwidth, or a subscription. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API, for example, bills based on active channel time and configured resolutions; see Google Cloud’s pricing page. |
| Storage and audience delivery | Preparing a file ahead of time does not necessarily reduce storage or the cost of serving viewers. | Include stored media and delivered minutes or bandwidth when those are billable. Cloudflare Stream’s pricing illustrates a model based on stored and delivered video minutes, with ingress and encoding free; see Cloudflare Stream pricing. |
| Quality and settings | Pre-encoding alone does not establish a lower rate for a given resolution or bitrate. | Compare the same duration and output quality. YouTube publishes recommended live bitrates by resolution, frame rate, and codec in its encoder settings guidance. |
Published cloud figures are examples, not savings estimates
Provider examples can show which cost components matter, but they cannot tell you how much your channel would save by pre-encoding.
- AWS example: AWS’s current pricing page gives an estimate of approximately $69.74 for a one-hour 540p event with about 1,000 viewers: $2.50 for live encoding and packaging and $67.24 for distribution. The estimate is for US East (N. Virginia), uses AWS’s stated assumptions, and AWS says actual costs may be lower. It is not a YouTube-specific estimate or a calculation of pre-encoding savings. See AWS pricing.
- Cloudflare Stream: Its pricing page, last updated September 8, 2026, lists $5 per 1,000 minutes of stored video capacity and $1 per 1,000 minutes delivered. It says ingress and encoding are free and bandwidth is included in delivered-video pricing. This illustrates that encoding may not be the main billable dimension; it does not predict the cost of a YouTube workflow. See Cloudflare Stream pricing.
These figures use different services and billing models, so they are not a direct comparison. Check the providers’ current prices and assumptions before relying on them.

How to make a fair cost comparison
- Define the two workflows. For each, note where files are stored, where playback runs, and whether encoding is done ahead of time, during playback, or both.
- Hold the stream constant. Use the same broadcast duration, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and expected audience for both estimates.
- Count local costs. Include any incremental electricity and equipment use, as well as the time needed to keep a local computer or hardware encoder operating.
- Count hosted costs. Include recurring service charges, storage, active-channel time, configured outputs, and audience delivery or bandwidth fees where applicable.
- Separate preparation from broadcasting. Compare the one-time cost of preparing files with the full cost of continuous playback and delivery. A one-time encoding run is not equivalent to a 24/7 stream bill.
- Account for reliability and operator effort. A local setup may use equipment you already own but require you to maintain a running system. A hosted workflow may charge for convenience; compare its actual billing basis rather than assuming advance encoding changes the fee.
Ways to automate prerecorded playback
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists the AJA HELO Plus and says its PlayToStream functionality can schedule prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. The page also lists cloud tools for 24/7 prerecorded streaming. These are examples of ways to automate playback and ingest, not evidence that a particular device or subscription saves money for your channel. See YouTube’s encoder guide.

Copyright and channel considerations
A 24/7 loop still needs to comply with YouTube’s rules and the rights attached to the material. Having a recording or being able to upload it does not by itself establish that you have the necessary rights to stream it. Review the applicable YouTube policies and rights for every video in a playlist. StreamNeo provides a copyright safety checklist to help with that review.
