SRT Streaming: How It Works and When to Use It

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SRT (Secure Reliable Transport) is an open-source protocol for moving live audio and video over IP networks. It uses UDP and adds packet-loss recovery, jitter handling, a configurable latency buffer and optional AES encryption. It is most useful for sending live video between locations across an unpredictable network when there is time and bandwidth for recovery. SRT is a transport—not an encoder or a complete streaming service—and it cannot make an inadequate network reliable.

How does SRT streaming work?

A source sends media packets to a receiver over UDP. Alongside the media, SRT endpoints exchange control information about packet delivery and network conditions. The receiver detects missing packets and can ask the sender to retransmit them. The Haivision SRT project describes Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) as SRT’s primary recovery mechanism.

A latency buffer gives requested packets time to arrive before the receiver plays the media. That buffer is the central trade-off: allowing more time can improve the opportunity to recover late packets, but adds transport delay. Retransmission also needs available bandwidth; SRT cannot recover packets if the connection or endpoint cannot support the traffic.

Is forward error correction part of every SRT stream?

No. The Haivision project describes a packet-filter API and a Forward Error Correction (FEC) plugin with ARQ-only, FEC-only and combined FEC-plus-ARQ modes. These are implementation capabilities, not a guarantee that a particular SRT product enables FEC. Check the documentation for the encoder, receiver or software you use.

Does SRT encrypt video?

SRT supports AES encryption when configured. In FFmpeg’s SRT protocol documentation, an enabled encryption setup uses a shared passphrase between endpoints, with a documented length of 10 to 79 characters. Configure compatible encryption settings and the same secret at both ends; encryption can also use endpoint processing capacity. See FFmpeg’s SRT protocol documentation for implementation-specific options.

When should you use SRT?

Consider SRT for live contribution or inter-system delivery over a public or otherwise variable IP path when recovery from packet loss, jitter control and encryption matter more than the lowest possible transport delay. Common workflows include sending a contribution feed point to point, aggregating sources, or handing streams to gateways for recording, IPTV or digital-signage systems.

On a stable, protected LAN or WAN, a simpler transport may be adequate. Haivision notes that conventional UDP video can work well on protected networks where loss is limited or addressed with FEC. Choose SRT when its recovery and control features address a real path problem, not simply because it is newer or sounds more robust.

What SRT does not replace

SRT moves media between compatible endpoints; it does not encode a camera signal, supply a viewer-facing website, provide adaptive-bitrate playback or replace production software. A working pipeline still needs a source, compatible encoding and muxing, an SRT-capable sender and receiver, and downstream distribution if viewers need to watch the stream. SRT and technologies such as HLS, RTMP and WebRTC can serve different parts of a live workflow, so there is no universal one-for-one replacement.

Caller, listener and rendezvous: what is the difference?

Mode Connection behavior What to check
Caller One endpoint initiates the connection. Confirm it can reach the listening endpoint through the network and firewall.
Listener One endpoint waits for an incoming connection. Confirm the destination port is accessible and permitted by firewall and NAT rules.
Rendezvous Both endpoints coordinate connection attempts. Check that both devices and the network support the mode; it may suit some symmetric network configurations, but does not remove the need to verify firewall behavior.

These modes describe how the connection is established, not which device is the media source. SRT uses bidirectional UDP, so the required firewall, NAT, filtering and port-forwarding rules depend on the topology. Do not assume that selecting SRT automatically avoids network configuration. The SRT Alliance deployment guidance covers these operating concepts; its cited deployment guide is version 1.1, so verify device-specific instructions against the equipment and software you deploy.

How much latency does SRT add?

There is no single SRT latency figure that applies to every stream. Latency is a configured recovery window, not a guarantee of end-to-end delay. The SRT Alliance deployment guide states that, in the configuration it describes, the higher source or destination latency setting is used. The actual experience also depends on the path, endpoint settings and the rest of the production and delivery chain.

Tune against measured round-trip time, packet loss, media bitrate and buffer behavior rather than choosing a value by guesswork. A larger recovery window gives retransmissions more time to arrive, while lower video bitrate or more recovery bandwidth can help on a constrained path. Each adjustment has trade-offs: added delay affects live interaction, lower bitrate affects picture quality, and recovery traffic needs capacity.

FFmpeg documents a recovery-bandwidth overhead setting with a default of 25 percent. That is an FFmpeg option default, not a universal SRT default or a promise that every product uses the same value. Check the settings and documentation for the implementation at each endpoint.

How to configure and monitor an SRT link

  1. Confirm both endpoints. Verify that the source and receiver support SRT, agree on compatible media encoding and muxing, and expose the settings your workflow needs. SRT itself does not encode the source.
  2. Choose a connection mode. Decide which endpoint calls, which listens, or whether both can use rendezvous. Base the choice on reachability and the actual network topology, not on which endpoint produces the video.
  3. Check the network path. Confirm bidirectional UDP is permitted and that the necessary destination port, NAT, firewall, filtering and any port-forwarding rules are in place. Validate reachability from the deployed networks.
  4. Set encryption consistently if required. Configure compatible encryption on both sides and use the same passphrase. For FFmpeg, consult its documented passphrase constraints and other protocol options rather than assuming settings transfer unchanged to another product.
  5. Set a starting latency and bitrate. Base the recovery window on measured round-trip time and observed loss. Ensure the path has capacity for the media plus recovery traffic; reduce video bitrate if the path is constrained.
  6. Run a test and inspect both ends. Check stream state, bitrate, packet loss and retransmissions, round-trip time, configured latency, and send/receive buffer behavior. Use endpoint statistics to find whether the problem is the path, the buffer window or a configuration mismatch.
  7. Adjust one relevant setting at a time. If packets arrive too late, test a larger latency window. If capacity is tight, test a lower video bitrate or, where supported, greater recovery bandwidth. Recheck picture quality, delay and statistics after each change.

Troubleshooting common SRT problems

Symptom Likely cause to investigate Practical checks
The endpoints do not connect. Wrong caller/listener roles, unreachable destination, blocked UDP, or a NAT, port-forwarding or filtering issue. Confirm the chosen mode and address/port at both ends; verify the required bidirectional UDP path and network rules.
Video has skipped or dropped frames. Packets may be arriving after the configured recovery window, or the path may lack capacity for the bitrate and recovery traffic. Inspect loss, retransmissions, round-trip time and buffer statistics. Test increasing latency, lowering video bitrate or increasing recovery bandwidth where supported.
Delay is too high. The configured recovery window or other parts of the end-to-end workflow may be adding delay. Measure the full workflow and tune the SRT latency setting against observed path conditions; reducing it also gives late packets less time to recover.
Encrypted endpoints fail to communicate. Encryption settings or shared secrets may not match, or a setting may not be supported as configured by one endpoint. Check compatible encryption configuration and verify the same passphrase at both ends; consult each implementation’s documentation.
Buffers repeatedly exceed the available latency window or connections keep dropping. Path capacity, changing network conditions or endpoint settings may be preventing stable delivery. Compare statistics at both endpoints, including bitrate, packet errors, round-trip time and buffer behavior; investigate the network path before changing unrelated settings.

How to choose between SRT and other delivery options

Compare technologies by the job they need to do, rather than treating every streaming protocol as interchangeable.

  • Transport delay: Does the workflow need the minimum possible delay, or can it accept a recovery buffer?
  • Loss recovery: Is retransmission or another recovery mechanism useful on the path?
  • Security: Does the link need configured encryption, and can both endpoints support it?
  • Network administration: Can you manage the necessary UDP, firewall and NAT rules?
  • Delivery pattern: Is this a contribution link between systems, or delivery to a broad audience? SRT does not by itself provide HLS-style segmented HTTP delivery or a viewer distribution service.
  • Implementation support: Do the actual devices and software at both ends support the required modes and settings?

It keeps the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.

StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded video, not camera-based live production. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
